How to unlock the peaceful option
The encounter takes place on the Vox Relay command floor during the main quest “The Saboteur of Paradise.” According to the guide, the peaceful route requires Marshal Corbin’s cooperation, reading every entry on Montelli’s terminal, and Speech level 5 when you speak with Montelli.
- Get Corbin to cooperate. The guide says you can do this with a Writ of Conscription or a Speech check.
- Read Montelli’s terminal. Read every available entry before confronting him. The guide specifically points to the dialogue about sending Corbin’s official notice.
- Speak with Montelli and choose the Speech 5 option. The guide says this makes him stand down instead of starting the boss fight.
The guide reports these dialogue lines for the peaceful exchange: “These extreme measures were never your idea in the first place, were they, Montelli?” and “Do what you know is right, not what your puppeteer tells you.” It says the first depends on Corbin’s cooperation and reading the terminal data, while the second requires Speech level 5. The lines are transcribed from the guide and have not been verified against an official script.

Which choice should you make?
Spare him for dialogue and a peaceful resolution
If your character meets the stated requirements, sparing Montelli is the stronger fit for a dialogue-focused playthrough: it avoids combat, retains Corbin’s support, and yields the extra information described by the guide. You do not give up the named weapon or armor, which it says remain collectable.
Kill him if you want the fight or XP
If you would rather resolve the encounter through combat, killing Montelli is a reasonable role-play choice. The guide reports a 300 XP reward, but no difference in access to the Chainspark Cannon or Officer Regalia.
