What happens when Shadowheart reaches the Nightsong?
The choice occurs in the Shadowfell during Shadowheart’s personal quest, after the Nightsong is revealed to be Dame Aylin. You can let Shadowheart kill Aylin, persuade or allow her to spare Aylin, or free her. If you prevent Shadowheart from deciding Aylin’s fate, Shadowheart can permanently leave the party. What happens if Shadowheart kills Aylin?
- Shadowheart becomes a Dark Justiciar and commits herself to Shar.
- Shar rewards her with the Spear of Evening.
- Aylin is lost as an ally.
- Last Light Inn loses its protection. Isobel can no longer sustain the protective magic, and the Inn’s inhabitants fall to the shadow curse. Jaheira does not aid the party in the resulting Last Light Inn fight.
These are substantial consequences beyond Shadowheart’s personal story: the kill route also changes what happens to the people sheltering at the Inn. BG3 Wiki: Daughter of Darkness
What happens if Shadowheart spares Aylin?
- Shadowheart abandons Shar.
- Aylin survives and can help in the conflict with Ketheric.
- Aylin later rewards Shadowheart with Selûne’s Spear of Night after the Ketheric sequence.
- Last Light Inn’s protective magic does not fail because of Aylin’s death.
Choose this route if keeping Aylin alive and preserving the Inn’s protection matter more to you than Shadowheart’s Shar-aligned outcome. BG3 Wiki: Daughter of Darkness

Can you let Shadowheart make the choice herself?
Shadowheart’s response depends on her approval and accumulated Nightsong Points, so there is no single non-directive line that guarantees the same result for every character. At 40 or more approval, the options “She knows something about you. Spare her, and see what she has to say,” “This is your choice. I can’t make it for you,” or silence can result in Shadowheart sparing Aylin without a check. With lower approval, persuasion checks may be required.
One documented condition is especially worth knowing: with approval from 20 to 39 and enough Nightsong Points, persuasion checks may be unavailable and the remaining choices lead to Shadowheart killing Aylin. - To improve the chance that she spares Aylin, build approval and choose supportive or non-directive dialogue.
- Avoid dialogue options that explicitly tell Shadowheart to kill Aylin if you want her to have the opportunity to spare her.
- If you want the decision to feel like Shadowheart’s own, the high-approval route supports that, but silence alone is not a guarantee at every approval level.

Larian’s Patch 7 notes include fixes involving Shadowheart and the Nightsong, including a fix for Shadowheart not receiving the Spear of Night when speaking to the Nightsong alone as a companion.
