Spare Montelli if you have prepared the peaceful dialogue route: you can avoid the boss fight, keep Corbin cooperative, and still obtain Montelli’s Chainspark Cannon and Officer Regalia. Kill him if you prefer the fight, want the reported 300 XP, or are following a character’s role-play. The choice does not appear to create a major main-quest branch, though guides report differences in later dialogue and information.
Where the Montelli choice happens
You meet Brigadier Montelli at the Vox Relay during The Saboteur of Paradise, after reaching his command area. Earlier decisions and Corbin’s status can affect whether you have access to the peaceful resolution. GamesRadar+ and GamesRecon describe different details about securing Corbin’s cooperation, so the dialogue route is not guaranteed to be available in every playthrough.
GamesRadar+ says actions early in the game can influence the confrontation and that Corbin needs to be alive and willing to follow his way. GamesRecon describes meeting Corbin before using Montelli’s terminal and reports that either a Writ of Conscription from The Saga of the Malfunctioning Mechanicals or Speech level 2 can secure Corbin’s cooperation.
How to talk Montelli down
- Get Corbin cooperating. GamesRadar+ emphasizes Corbin’s survival and agreeing to do things his way; GamesRecon reports the Writ of Conscription or Speech level 2 as routes to his cooperation. These guides do not describe the setup identically.
- Use Montelli’s terminal before the confrontation. Send the message or official notice relieving him of command, then read every terminal entry. The guides describe the notice in slightly different terms.
- Choose the dialogue that challenges Montelli’s orders. GamesRadar+ gives the options “These extreme measures were never your idea…” and “Do what you know is right, not what your puppeteer tells you”. GamesRecon reproduces the first as “These extreme measures were never your idea in the first place, were they, Montelli?” and gives the same second line. The second option requires Speech 5.
The Speech 5 check is central to the reported talk-down route. Because the guides differ on how Corbin’s help is obtained, treat the other preparation requirements as route-dependent rather than assuming the same sequence applies to every save.

What happens if you spare Montelli?
- You avoid fighting Montelli and his guards.
- Montelli leaves behind his Chainspark Cannon and Officer Regalia, according to the guides; sparing him does not mean forfeiting those items.
- Corbin remains cooperative on the peaceful route.
- GamesRecon reports that Montelli surrenders and is later executed, and that information from the encounter becomes relevant in a later quest. GamesRadar+ characterizes the wider story impact as limited, so these downstream details are best understood as reported dialogue and information differences, not a guaranteed major branch.
What happens if you kill Montelli?
Killing him starts a fight with Montelli and his guards. GamesRecon and Millenium report a 300 XP reward. GamesRadar+ says killing him yields somewhat more Bits and XP than sparing him, but does not state a Bits amount. The Chainspark Cannon and Officer Regalia are also reported as available after the peaceful outcome.
Corbin may be at risk during the fight: GamesRadar+ says keeping him alive is difficult, while GamesRecon reports that his attitude worsens after the violent outcome. Neither guide establishes that Corbin will survive or react identically in every playthrough.

For most players who can pass the dialogue checks, sparing is the practical option: it avoids a difficult fight without sacrificing the reported weapon and armor. Killing remains a valid role-play choice, but the loot alone is not a strong reason to choose it.
