That follows the series’ release order and gives you its story progression from the beginning. Starting with The Witcher 2 is also a reasonable shortcut if that is the game you’re most interested in.
Why play The Witcher before The Witcher 2?
CD PROJEKT RED identifies The Witcher as the first game in its trilogy. The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is the next installment in release sequence; CD PROJEKT’s history lists its PC release as 17 May 2011. Playing in that order lets you experience the series’ progression as released.
The official franchise buy page lists The Witcher and The Witcher 2 Enhanced Edition. The evidence establishes their order, but it does not specify how much story context a newcomer would miss by beginning with the sequel. So treat the first game as the recommended starting point for continuity, not as proven mandatory preparation for the second.
When does it make sense to start with The Witcher 2?
If The Witcher 2 is the game that appeals to you most, you can begin there rather than putting off the series until you play the first one. The documented sequel relationship supports playing the first game beforehand for release-order progression, but does not settle how self-contained The Witcher 2 feels to a new player.

What to consider before choosing
| Option | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| The Witcher, then The Witcher 2 | You want the series in release order and are interested in experiencing its first installment. | You’ll need to take on an older PC-game release before reaching the sequel. |
| Start with The Witcher 2 | You are specifically drawn to the second game and prefer to start with it. | You will not experience the story in release order; the available official information does not quantify what context you may miss. |
This is a choice about story order and your interest in the first installment. The sources establish no comparative verdict on combat, controls, or performance.
Check the edition and platform before buying
The Witcher 2 Enhanced Edition has historical PC and Xbox 360 release evidence: CD PROJEKT’s 2015 financial report records it arriving on those platforms in April 2012. That history is not a guarantee that a particular copy will work on your current setup.
