Sometimes—but “Questionable” does not mean “Out.” The NFL uses the designation when it is uncertain whether a player will participate. Decide separately whether the back is likely to play and whether his expected role, if active, is worth more than your actual alternative. Start him when the upside and your ability to cover a late inactive justify the risk; otherwise, a healthy player with a steadier role may be safer.
What “Questionable” means—and what it doesn’t
The NFL defines Questionable as uncertainty about whether a player will participate. It is not an announcement that he will sit, nor does it predict his workload if he plays.
Make two distinct judgments: first, how likely he is to be active based on current reporting; second, whether his likely touches and role would make him a better option than your replacement. A player can be active but limited, so an active designation alone does not settle the lineup decision.
How to make the game-day call
- Check current, authoritative updates. Look for the team’s latest news and the official inactive announcement. NFL Fantasy Support says teams designate players inactive about 90 minutes before the scheduled game. Treat that as an approximate window, not a promise that every useful update will arrive at one exact time. NFL Fantasy Support’s inactive guidance also describes its Auto-Swap Inactives feature.
- Compare him with the player you would actually start instead. Consider your scoring format, each player’s projected role and touches, matchup, and any credible signs that the questionable back could be limited. Weekly start/sit decisions depend on the specific options available; NFL Fantasy’s running-back start/sit coverage is one example of that kind of weekly analysis.
- Check whether you can still substitute. If your league permits it, putting a late-playing uncertain player in a flexible slot can preserve options. Keep an eligible replacement whose game has not started, and verify your league’s lineup-lock rules. Auto-Swap Inactives is a platform-specific NFL Fantasy feature, so check whether your own platform offers it and how its settings work.
- Weigh the downside against the upside. Waiting is more attractive when the back is a valuable starter and you have a suitable replacement available later. It is riskier when the alternative plays earlier, is weak, or cannot be swapped in after kickoff. If a healthy alternative has a comparable role, choosing that player may reduce the chance of being left with little or no production.
- Recheck before the lineup locks. Status can change close to kickoff. NFL pregame coverage has reported both true game-time decisions and inactive outcomes; its Week 3, 2026 injury coverage illustrates the type of update to look for. Those player-specific reports apply to that week, not future games.
Compare the two lineup options
- Availability: What is the latest official status, and how current is the report?
- Workload if active: What role and touch volume are plausible, and is there credible reporting of a limitation?
- Risk versus reward: How costly would an inactive or reduced workload be compared with the alternative’s likely contribution?
- League setup: Does the choice occupy a running-back slot or a flexible slot, and how does your scoring format affect the comparison?
- Substitution window: Will your replacement’s game start later, and will your fantasy platform still let you make the swap?
There is no universal start/sit answer without the player, opponent, league format, and available replacements. Use current-week reporting and the rules for your own roster to make the call.
