Before either choice, compare the same model and bundle, then check the seller’s return and price-adjustment rules.
What should you do?
Use urgency and price sensitivity to make the call. If saving money matters more than playing immediately, track the exact console you want and watch for an announced offer. If you would use the console during the wait, or its current price is acceptable, buying now can be reasonable—especially if the seller offers useful return or price-adjustment protection.

- Buy now: You have an immediate reason to play, the price works for your budget, and you have checked the seller’s policies.
There is no source-backed market-wide estimate for how likely a console discount is or how large a typical discount will be. Treat past offers as examples, not forecasts.

A manufacturer’s recommended retail price is a useful baseline, but it is not necessarily the amount a retailer is charging at checkout. Compare the current price for the exact model across sellers, including taxes, shipping, and any required membership or subscription. Check whether the product is new, used, or certified refurbished.

PS5 recommended prices
Sony’s US recommended prices, effective April 2, 2026, are $649.99 for PS5, $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition, and $899.99 for PS5 Pro. These are recommended prices, not a guarantee of a retailer’s live price. Sony announced increases across markets, citing continued pressure in the global economic landscape. Its announcement lists these recommended prices for other regions as well:

Compare like with like
Do not compare a digital-only console with a disc model, a standard model with a Pro, or a new console with a refurbished one as if they were identical offers. Verify storage tier, model generation, condition, included accessories, warranty, and return terms. A low price on a different SKU may not be a better deal for your needs.
What past console offers can—and cannot—tell you
There is evidence of past promotions, but it does not establish what this year’s discounts will be. ShopBack US reported that Sony’s 2025 US Black Friday offers included a PS5 Digital Edition Fortnite bundle for $399.99, a PS5 1TB Fortnite bundle for $449.99, and $100 off PS5 Pro. Those were reported US offers for 2025, not confirmed 2026 prices. Sony’s April 2026 recommended prices also mean that simply aiming for last year’s bundle figures would ignore changed pricing.

ShopBack’s October 8, 2026 guide says Black Friday falls on November 27 and notes that offers began about a week early in each of the prior two years. It also said Sony had not announced its 2026 offers as of publication. Monitor announcements in November if you plan to wait, but do not treat the timing or discounts as promised. The cited sources do not confirm exact 2026 Black Friday console discounts for PS5, Xbox, or Switch 2.
PlayStation’s official events page lists 2026 Days of Play from May 27 to June 10 and a PlayStation Store Summer Sale from July 15 to August 12. These dates show that promotions occur, but the Summer Sale is primarily for digital games, add-ons, and more; it is not evidence of a console hardware discount. The page also records the 2025 Black Friday event running November 21 to December 5. Check PlayStation’s official deals and events page for listed events.

How to judge bundles and refurbished consoles
Count only bundle extras you would actually buy
A bundle’s headline price does not tell you how much you save. Subtract the value of an included game or service only if you would otherwise pay for it. Check whether a subscription renews automatically and what it costs after any included period. For example, ShopBack US reported a Nintendo Switch 2 list price of $499.99 and a Mario Kart World bundle at $549.99 in 2026; the $50 difference is meaningful only if you want the game at that effective price.

Use this calculation: effective console cost = bundle checkout price − the amount you would genuinely have spent on included items. Do not treat unwanted content as savings.

Compare condition and protections
Microsoft says certified refurbished Xbox consoles may be available for up to $100 off MSRP through Microsoft Stores. “Up to” does not mean every model or buyer will find that discount. Compare the specific refurbished unit’s price, condition, warranty, accessories, and return terms with a new console before deciding. Microsoft also notes that consoles are typically sold for less than their cost to make; that manufacturer statement describes the business model, not a forecast of future prices. Before checkout, read the retailer’s policy for the exact item and purchase date. A price adjustment may let a buyer recover some or all of a later price drop, but eligibility rules, stock, and deadlines matter. Microsoft says qualifying products purchased from its Store from October 1 through December 2, 2026 may qualify for price adjustment through January 31, 2027, subject to eligibility, terms, and stock. This is a Microsoft Store policy, not a guarantee for every console or retailer; check the current terms before relying on it. Microsoft Store sales and special offers and its price adjustment policy set out the relevant details.
Also check the return window and whether a later lower price would qualify for an adjustment or require returning and repurchasing the console. Do not assume a retailer will honor a later offer automatically.

- Name the exact SKU. Record the model, edition, storage, region, condition, and any bundle contents you want.
- Compare the real checkout total. Check multiple sellers and include taxes, shipping, and required memberships.
