Shujinkou earned a 90 Metascore from six critic reviews on Metacritic’s PS5 page when observed in 2026. Five reviews were positive, one was mixed, and none were negative; displayed scores ranged from 70 to 100. That is a strong but small and not unanimous sample. The game pairs turn-based dungeon crawling with an optional Japanese-learning system, so whether it suits you depends on your appetite for both.
What critics think of Shujinkou
Metacritic’s PS5 critic page displayed a 90 Metascore from six reviews when observed in 2026, labeled “Universal Acclaim.” Its breakdown was five positive reviews (83%), one mixed review (17%), and zero negative reviews. The displayed scores ran from 70 to 100, with RPGamer at the low end and Digitally Downloaded at the high end.
The surfaced review excerpts point to the game’s ambition, its combination of Japanese study and a full JRPG, and its appeal to dungeon-crawler fans as strengths. The 70-point score is a reminder that the execution does not work equally well for every critic. The aggregate indicates favorable reception, not a guarantee that the game’s mechanics or learning system will fit your preferences.
These numbers describe the PS5 page, not a combined score for every platform. Metacritic’s displayed review dates ran from February through July 2025, and its review count or score can change as the page is updated.

What kind of game is it?
Rice Games describes Shujinkou as a story-driven, turn-based dungeon crawler. Its language-learning component is optional, so players can approach it as a JRPG without treating each encounter as a lesson. The core appeal is therefore not limited to language learners: it also depends on whether you enjoy exploring dungeons, turn-based battles, party and progression systems, and a substantial story.
Japanese study is woven into play
The learning system practices kana, kanji, and grammar. Steam describes thousands of words, phrases, and language elements, while the official Rice Games page highlights hiragana, katakana, kanji, and grammar. These are developer descriptions of the game’s content, not independent findings about learning outcomes. The game should not be treated as a substitute for a structured course or as a guarantee of proficiency.
How long is the campaign?
Steam describes Shujinkou as an 80-hour story campaign. That is the developer’s stated campaign length, not an independently measured playtime estimate; actual time will depend on how you play and engage with its content.

- Control everything that happens in your park, from what your animals eat to what eats your animals…
- Decide whether you want to run your Zoo above board... or break the law and pocket the extra cash
Who is most likely to enjoy it?
- Dungeon-crawler and JRPG fans: The strongest fit is someone who wants turn-based combat, dungeon exploration, character progression, and a story-driven campaign.
- Players curious about Japanese: The integrated study system offers practice with writing systems and grammar, while remaining optional.
- Players seeking a language course first: The game is still an RPG. Its language features are part of play, and the available descriptions do not establish independent learning results.
Before choosing it, consider how much you want from each side of the design: the RPG itself, the amount of active study in play, and the way those elements fit together. The critic score can help establish reception, but it cannot answer those personal-fit questions for you.
Platforms and release-date records
Rice Games lists digital availability on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Steam. Its page gives February 13, 2025 for PS5, PS4, and Steam, and Steam’s listing also gives February 13, 2025. Metacritic’s details page lists PC, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PS4, and gives February 7, 2025 as the initial release date. The sources do not explain the difference, so the dates should be read as separate records rather than silently reconciled.
The cited pages establish digital storefront listings; they do not establish a physical console edition. Storefront availability may change.

How to read the aggregate
A six-review sample gives a useful snapshot, but it is limited. One mixed review accounts for a notable share of the displayed split, and the 70-to-100 range shows that critics did not agree completely. The score is evidence of a positive reception on PS5, not proof of universal appeal or a platform-wide consensus across all versions.
For a decision, weigh that reception against the game’s defining trade-off: Shujinkou is built as a dungeon-crawling JRPG with language study integrated as an option, rather than a language course with RPG elements added around it.
