Shutter Story is an upcoming psychological horror investigation game from Frostwood Interactive. You inspect a friend’s family photos and home videos for paranormal evidence, then classify what you find; the game’s Steam description says mistakes affect the fate of Eli and his family. Steam currently lists the full game for Q1 2027, while a separate demo has been listed since October 23, 2025.
What is Shutter Story?
Shutter Story is a single-player horror investigation game built around examining digital evidence. Eli, your friend, suspects something paranormal is happening to his family. You help investigate by reviewing their photographs and home videos on an in-game computer, then explore the house in first person between desktop investigations.

The game’s emphasis on “photo-editing” is about its fictional investigative software, not a real photo-editing application or camera. Steam describes the game and its SpectralAware 2.1 tool on its Steam listing.
How does the photo investigation work?
You examine the family’s photos and videos through SpectralAware 2.1, a fictional analysis tool. Its controls let you adjust exposure, contrast, noise, and filters to inspect the material for signs of paranormal activity. You then classify your findings. The exact range of possible findings and classifications is not specified in the game’s public description.
#1 Best Overall
- Gorgeous Pixel Art & Animation: The game captures the essence of the Terrifier films with bright, cartoonish pixel art and fluid animations that vividly depict the gruesome action.
- Multiplayer Mayhem: Team up with up to 4 players for a chaotic local co-op experience. Work together—or against each other—in various game modes. Travel through multiple stages, each with different paths to explore and enemies to defeat. Prepare yourself for intense boss battles that will test your skills.
- Bloody Arsenal of Weapons: From chainsaws to cleavers, pick up a variety of weapons to turn your enemies into bloody pulp. Enjoy hilarious and gory attacks that make every fight as entertaining as it is brutal. The finishing moves are guaranteed to leave a gory delight impression! Relive the golden age of gaming with a glorious chiptune soundtrack that perfectly complements the retro aesthetic.
- Multiple Game Modes: With 6 different game modes, whether you're looking for a quick beat 'em up session or an extended challenge, there's a mode that fits your style.
- Languages: English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (LATAM), and Spanish (Spain) in game text.
This makes the computer interface the core of the investigation, but it is not the entire game: Frostwood Interactive also describes first-person exploration of Eli’s house. The developer cites Her Story, Mouthwashing, Home Safety Hotline, and Pulse (2001) as inspirations. Those are the developer’s reference points, not a guarantee that the games share the same mechanics or experience; see the Frostwood Interactive game page.
What happens if you get a classification wrong?
Your classifications matter to the story. Steam says mistakes carry consequences for Eli and his family, framing the investigation as more than a puzzle about spotting visual anomalies. The store description does not detail the outcomes, how many errors the game allows, or whether a wrong call can be corrected.

When does Shutter Story come out?
Steam currently lists the full game as not yet available, with a Q1 2027 release window. That is a store-listed target, not a confirmed launch date. Frostwood Interactive’s press kit still shows “TBA” for release, so its entry appears older than Steam’s current window. You can check the Steam game listing for the latest availability information.

Yes. Steam lists a separate Shutter Story Demo with a release date of October 23, 2025. That date is for the demo, not the full game. The demo has its own Steam listing; check it for current access and availability.
