If Windows or Proteus shows External model DLL "SIGGEN.DLL" not found, VSM model SIGGEN.DLL not found, or VSM model SIGGEN.DLL has no GLE for '$SIGNAL GENERATOR', the problem is usually inside Proteus. Other messages include The program can't start because siggen.dll is missing from your computer, The code execution cannot proceed because siggen.dll was not found, and siggen.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
siggen.dll is a Proteus VSM simulation model for the Signal Generator instrument, not a Windows system file. The safest repair is to restore the matching Proteus model files and reconnect Proteus to its own model directory.

What siggen.dll belongs to
Proteus Design Suite uses external simulation models for instruments and electronic components. SIGGEN.DLL is associated with the Signal Generator model used by Proteus VSM, particularly in older Proteus 7 and Proteus 8 installations.
It does not belong to Windows, DirectX, .NET, or the Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable. There is no verified reason to copy it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

A commonly reported Proteus installation location is:
C:Program Files (x86)Labcenter ElectronicsProteus 8 ProfessionalDATAMODELS
Some installations use a MODELS directory instead. The correct location depends on the installed Proteus release and its configuration. Do not treat the path above as universal.
Proteus 9 uses a modern 64-bit architecture and can be installed alongside Proteus 8. A legacy model file should not be copied into Proteus 9 simply because the filename matches.

What the error means
There are two different failure types.
Proteus cannot find its model
These messages point primarily to a Proteus configuration or installation problem:
External model DLL "SIGGEN.DLL" not foundVSM model SIGGEN.DLL not foundVSM model SIGGEN.DLL has no GLE for '$SIGNAL GENERATOR'
The file may be missing, the simulator path may point to the wrong directory, or the file may belong to another Proteus release.
If only the Signal Generator fails while other Proteus simulations work, focus on the model folder and simulator path before repairing Windows.
Windows cannot load the file
These messages are more general:
The program can't start because siggen.dll is missing from your computerThe code execution cannot proceed because siggen.dll was not foundsiggen.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error
They can indicate that the file was deleted, quarantined, corrupted, or loaded by the wrong executable. A generic Windows message does not by itself prove that Proteus is the source. Confirm which program displays it and where that program is installed.

Fix 1: Check the Proteus model directory
Close Proteus before checking its files.
- Press
Windows + Eto open File Explorer. - Browse to the folder where Proteus is installed.
- Check the
DATAMODELSfolder. - If it is not there, check for a
MODELSfolder inside the Proteus installation. - Look for
SIGGEN.DLL. Windows may display the file assiggen.dll. - Do not open or replace the file manually yet.
If the file exists, the problem may be an incorrect Proteus search path. If it does not exist, skip to the repair or reinstall step rather than downloading a replacement from the internet.
Check the simulator path in Proteus
The exact menu name varies by Proteus release, but look under the simulator, system, or application configuration settings for a current path, model path, or data path.
- Open Proteus.
- Open the configuration or system settings used by the simulator.
- Find the current working path or model directory.
- Make sure it points to the
DATAMODELSorMODELSdirectory belonging to the same Proteus installation. - Remove references to an old installation, temporary folder, copied archive, or another computer.
- Save the setting and restart Proteus.
- Open a design containing the Signal Generator and run the simulation.
If Proteus still reports SIGGEN.DLL not found even though the file exists, the path is probably wrong or the file is incompatible with that Proteus release.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the matching Proteus release
This is the most reliable fix when the model file is missing or damaged.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →First identify the installed release:
- Open Proteus.
- Check its Help menu or home page for the version information.
- If Proteus will not open, right-click its shortcut and choose Open file location.
- Record the full installation path and any version information shown by the installer or uninstaller.
Then obtain the installer, update, or repair package from Labcenter Electronics, the developer of Proteus. Use the official Proteus downloads or upgrades area, not a DLL archive.
If the installer offers a repair option:
- Close Proteus and any related process.
- Open Settings with
Windows + I. - Select Apps and then Installed apps.
- Find the matching Proteus entry.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Modify, Change, or Repair, if available.
- Allow the installer to restore model and data files.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Open Proteus and test the Signal Generator.
If repair is unavailable, reinstall the same Proteus release from its legitimate installer. Back up your project files first. Do not mix a SIGGEN.DLL copied from Proteus 7, Proteus 8, or another machine with a different release.
A successful repair restores the model files and lets the Signal Generator run without the VSM model error. If the installer completes but the error remains, inspect the simulator path again and check whether antivirus software removed the file.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine an application file even when the rest of Proteus remains installed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections for the Proteus installation directory or
SIGGEN.DLL. - Expand the relevant detection and review its path and action.
- Restore the file only if it clearly came from your trusted Proteus installation and you have verified that the detection is a false positive.
- If you cannot establish its origin, do not restore it. Repair or reinstall Proteus instead.
Microsoft warns that allowing a malicious file can expose the device. A file found in a temporary directory, download archive, or unexpected system folder should not be trusted merely because its name is siggen.dll.
Fix 4: Remove version and architecture mismatches
A copied DLL can have the right name and still be the wrong file.
This commonly happens after:
- Upgrading Proteus
- Moving the installation to another drive
- Keeping an old model directory after reinstalling
- Copying Proteus files between computers
- Installing Proteus 9 beside Proteus 8
- Restoring only part of an older backup
Proteus 9’s 64-bit architecture makes legacy substitutions particularly risky. A publicly indexed DLL record may show a 32-bit sample or a generic version value, but that is not a universal specification for every Proteus release.
To correct a mismatch:
- Close Proteus.
- Do not overwrite the current model directory with a downloaded DLL.
- Remove or rename manually copied model files only after preserving a backup.
- Run repair or reinstall using the installer for the exact Proteus release.
- Confirm that the simulator path points to that release’s own model directory.
- Test the Signal Generator again.
If the message says the file is “not designed to run on Windows,” suspect corruption or incompatible architecture before installing a runtime package.

Fix 5: Do not use System32 or regsvr32
Do not copy siggen.dll into either of these folders:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Those folders are for Windows and application components that explicitly use them. Proteus expects its simulation model in its own model/data directory. Moving the file to a system folder can make troubleshooting harder and may cause another application to load an untrusted copy.

regsvr32 is also not a routine fix. It registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer; it does not repair a missing Proteus model or change Proteus’s model search path. Running a command such as this is therefore not appropriate merely because the filename ends in .dll:
regsvr32 siggen.dll
Use registration only when the software vendor specifically documents it for that component.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows is also failing
SFC and DISM do not normally recreate a third-party Proteus model. Use them when Windows itself has broader corruption symptoms, several unrelated applications fail, or the error points to damaged Windows components.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the command to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test Proteus again.
Do not close the window while either scan is running. If both commands complete without resolving the Proteus error, return to the Proteus repair and model-path steps. SFC cannot be expected to recreate SIGGEN.DLL because it is not verified as a Windows-protected system file.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time while the actual problem remains a missing Proteus model. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan that identifies repair issues, while its full version performs the repair; reinstalling the matching Proteus release remains the definitive fix for this application file.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Check drivers only for wider simulation problems
A display or hardware driver is not the normal cause of a missing Proteus model. Consider driver troubleshooting only when Proteus has graphical failures, several simulations crash, or other applications show display-related errors.
To check a display driver:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver and then Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- If the issue began immediately after a driver update, open Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when available.
Do not uninstall a working driver solely because siggen.dll is missing. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers, with driver installation handled by its full version; the Signal Generator still needs the correct Proteus model files, not a generic driver replacement.
Why random DLL downloads are the wrong repair
Downloading siggen.dll from a random DLL website creates several risks:
- The file may contain malware.
- It may be the wrong architecture.
- It may belong to another Proteus release.
- It may be incomplete or modified.
- It may satisfy one error while leaving the model path broken.
- It may cause Proteus to load an incompatible external model.
There is no verified official standalone download for siggen.dll. The safe source is the matching Proteus installer, update, or repair process supplied by Labcenter Electronics. If a file is already outside the Proteus directory, establish its provenance before using it.

When System Restore is appropriate
Use System Restore only when the problem began after a known software change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it and select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the Proteus installation changed.
- Review the affected applications.
- Start the restore only after saving current work.
System Restore rolls back applications, drivers, settings, and other system changes after the selected point. It is a last resort, not a replacement for reinstalling Proteus.
FAQ
Is siggen.dll a Windows file?
No verified evidence identifies it as a Windows component. It is associated with the Proteus VSM Signal Generator model.
Should I install Visual C++ to fix it?
Not as the first step. The usual failure is a missing, mismatched, or unreachable Proteus model. Install a runtime only when the Proteus installer or a documented dependency error specifically requires it.
Where should siggen.dll be installed?
It belongs in the model/data directory of the installed Proteus release, commonly a DATAMODELS or older MODELS folder. Do not place it in System32 or SysWOW64.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why does Proteus say the file is missing when it exists?
The simulator’s current path may point to another installation, an old directory, or a temporary location. Correct the Proteus model path and restart the program.
Can a Proteus 8 copy work in Proteus 9?
Do not assume it can. Proteus 9 uses a modern 64-bit architecture, so use the model files supplied with the correct release.
What should I provide when asking for help?
Include the Proteus version, Windows version, exact error text, full installation path, whether SIGGEN.DLL exists, and whether only the Signal Generator fails.
