Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing files, record:
- The exact program named in the error
- Whether the error appears at startup, while opening a Windows feature, or during a specific task
- The complete popup text
- Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The path shown for
CoreUIComponents.dll, if any - Your Windows version and build
- Whether the problem began after an update, antivirus alert, driver change, or application update

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutecoreuicomponents.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system component, not a normal third-party application DLL. It belongs to the protected Microsoft-OneCore-CoreUiComponents Windows component and is serviced through Windows rather than through a standalone Microsoft download.
Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL. First identify whether Windows is damaged, one application is damaged, or an application crash merely happens to name this file.

Know what the error actually means
Windows may display messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because CoreUIComponents.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application has failed to start because CoreUIComponents.dll was not found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because CoreUIComponents.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting CoreUIComponents.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “CoreUIComponents.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages do not all prove that the file itself is absent.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →“Specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency required by CoreUIComponents.dll is missing or incompatible. If Event Viewer lists the file as a faulting module, that identifies where an exception surfaced, not necessarily what caused it. Microsoft reports have associated this module with crashes involving Sticky Notes, Settings, Xbox Game Bar, Explorer, and other Windows UI processes, but replacing the named DLL is not automatically the solution.
Check the correct Windows locations
On 64-bit Windows, the normal native path is:
C:WindowsSystem32CoreUIComponents.dll
The 32-bit compatibility copy is normally here:
C:WindowsSysWOW64CoreUIComponents.dll
The names are counterintuitive. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system binaries. SysWOW64 contains 32-bit binaries used by 32-bit processes. Microsoft documents this redirection in its file-system redirector documentation.

To check the file:
- Press
Win + E. - Enter
%windir%System32in the address bar. - Search for
CoreUIComponents.dll. - On a 64-bit installation, also check
%windir%SysWOW64. - Right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect Digital Signatures.
A missing file is not the only problem. An incorrect version, damaged signature, wrong architecture, or damaged dependency can produce similar symptoms. Windows build-specific copies are not interchangeable. Public metadata has shown versions from older Windows builds as well as newer Windows 11 build families, but those lists are historical and incomplete.
Fix 1: Install updates and restart
A pending or incomplete Windows update can leave protected components inconsistent.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if the system does not immediately require it.
- Test the program or Windows feature again.
If several Windows UI features fail, continue directly to DISM and SFC rather than repeatedly reinstalling the affected application.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the primary repair for a missing or damaged Windows component. DISM repairs the Windows component store, and SFC uses that repaired source to replace protected system files. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its system file repair guide.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the failing program.
Do not close the window just because progress appears to pause. DISM and SFC can take time.
A successful result may say that no integrity violations were found, or that corrupt files were found and repaired. If the error remains, run Windows Update again, restart, and repeat the test. Do not repeatedly run SFC alone when it reports that the component store or source files are also corrupt.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOutbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of hunting through repair results and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed. Its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is handled by the full version; it is optional, and Windows servicing remains the appropriate first repair.
If SFC cannot repair the file
Microsoft documents these targeted commands in its SFC command reference:
sfc /verifyfile=C:WindowsSystem32CoreUIComponents.dll
sfc /scanfile=C:WindowsSystem32CoreUIComponents.dll
Use the SysWOW64 path only when investigating the 32-bit copy:

To extract SFC repair details to your desktop, run:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, use a matching Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
The source must match the installed Windows edition, build, language, and architecture as closely as possible. Do not use an arbitrary Windows folder from another computer.
Fix 3: Repair the affected Windows app
If only one packaged application fails and Windows itself works normally, repair that application after completing the system-file checks.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Click Repair.
- Test the application.
If Repair does not help, use Reset. Reset can remove the application’s local data, so use it only after Repair and after backing up anything important. For Microsoft Store applications, open the Microsoft Store, select Library, and install available updates. Reinstall the application only from its legitimate Microsoft Store listing or the software publisher’s official installer.

If the popup names a third-party executable but the DLL path is C:WindowsSystem32, repair Windows first. The application may be exposing a Windows problem rather than owning the file.
Fix 4: Investigate a recent update or system change
If the problem began immediately after Windows Update, a driver update, or another system change, use recovery options rather than copying files.
For System Restore:
- Open Start.
- Search for Recovery.
- Select Recovery.
- Click Open System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Start the restore.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs without removing personal files. Microsoft explains the available paths in its Windows recovery options and System Restore guide.

Security software can quarantine a damaged or suspicious file. Do not restore a DLL merely because an application says it is missing.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
CoreUIComponents.dll. - Confirm that the path is a Windows system directory and inspect the detection details.
- Restore it only when the file’s origin and signature are trustworthy.
- Run a full scan afterward.
Microsoft describes this process in its Protection History guidance. If malware is suspected, run a full Microsoft Defender scan and use Defender Offline. A file repeatedly becoming corrupt can also justify checking storage health.
Fix 6: Update the graphics driver or remove conflicts
A crash naming CoreUIComponents.dll can originate in an overlay, shell extension, graphics driver, or application conflict.
First update the driver from the computer or graphics hardware manufacturer. You can also check Windows’ driver status:

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
Temporarily disable game overlays, recording utilities, shell customizations, and recently installed system utilities. Then test the application again. If another Windows user profile works correctly, the original profile or its application data may be damaged.
Outbyte Driver Updater can simplify the tedious work of identifying stale drivers across several devices. Its free scan reports what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version; verify important drivers against the hardware manufacturer, and do not treat it as a guaranteed fix for a Windows component crash.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not use regsvr32 for this file
Do not run:
regsvr32 CoreUIComponents.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. CoreUIComponents.dll is a protected Windows component, so registration is not its repair mechanism. Microsoft documents the command’s intended use in its regsvr32 reference.
Do not enable random Windows Features to obtain this file. Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, and .NET are also not appropriate first fixes merely because the filename ends in .dll.

Avoid manual DLL downloads
There is no legitimate standalone Microsoft CoreUIComponents.dll installer. Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an unsigned file, the wrong Windows build, or the wrong architecture. Copying a Windows 10 file into Windows 11, or placing a 32-bit file in the native 64-bit system directory, can create additional servicing and compatibility problems.
Windows Resource Protection restricts replacement of protected resources, as Microsoft explains in its Windows Resource Protection documentation. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching Microsoft installation media, or the affected application’s official installer instead.
Last-resort Windows repair
For Windows 11, try the built-in repair reinstall:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Click Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings.
If that option is unavailable, use matching Microsoft installation media. Start setup.exe from within Windows, select Change what to keep, and choose Keep personal files and apps. Microsoft provides the procedure in its installation-media repair guide. Back up important data before any major recovery operation.
FAQ
Is CoreUIComponents.dll part of Windows?
Yes. It is associated with Microsoft’s protected Microsoft-OneCore-CoreUiComponents component and normally resides in a Windows system directory.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not for this file specifically. Those packages are separate runtimes. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC first, then investigate the application named in the error.
Why does Event Viewer list CoreUIComponents.dll?
It may be the module where an exception surfaced. That does not prove that the DLL is corrupt. Check the application name, exception code, drivers, overlays, and whether other Windows UI components also fail.
Which copy should I repair?
Use System32 for the native 64-bit copy and SysWOW64 for the 32-bit compatibility copy. Do not swap files between them.
What information should I provide if the problem continues?
Record the exact popup, application name, Windows version and build, DLL path, Event Viewer faulting application, and the final DISM and SFC results. That evidence distinguishes a Windows-wide component problem from a single-application crash.
