Sigil is available to registered D&D Beyond users, but the service is now operating under a sunset deadline. Free accounts can access the base experience and join multiplayer games, while Master Tier is required to host sessions. Wizards of the Coast ended development in October 2025 and says Sigil’s servers will shut down at the end of October 2026.
Sigil is accessible to registered D&D Beyond users, but it is no longer an actively developed virtual tabletop. Wizards of the Coast ended Sigil development on October 24, 2025, and plans to shut down its servers at the end of October 2026. Until then, a free D&D Beyond account can access Sigil’s base experience and join multiplayer sessions; only Master Tier subscribers can create and host multiplayer rooms.

That makes the original headline—“Sigil 3D VTT is now live”—incomplete in 2026. Sigil is still available during its sunset period, not launching as a long-term platform. The official Sigil product page describes it as downloadable desktop software powered by Unreal Engine 5, rather than a browser-only virtual tabletop.

Sigil is D&D Beyond’s three-dimensional virtual tabletop for Dungeons & Dragons. It combines three related functions:
#1 Best Overall
- 【Rectangular Design, Ideal Size & Smooth Surface】This 31 x 55-inch neoprene board game mat comfortably seats 5–6 players. Cards glide effortlessly without snagging, ensuring smooth gameplay. Perfect for mahjong, poker, DND, card games, and RPGs.
- 【Waterproof & Non-Slip Protection】Waterproof neoprene shields your table from spills, scratches, and daily wear. The textured rubber backing grips firmly, preventing movement during intense gameplay. The cushioned layer also helps keep cards from bending.
- 【Portable & Easy to Store】 Lightweight and rollable—no bulky case needed. Simply roll it up for game nights, tournaments, or outdoor events. Stores neatly at home.
- 【Multi-Purpose Desk Mat】Doubles as a protective desk mat, mouse pad, or mahjong table cover. Cushioned, waterproof, and stylish for home or office use.
- 【Universal Game Table Topper】 Compatible with virtually all tabletop games: mahjong, poker, DND, chess, tile games, dominoes, dice games, RPGs, wargames, and trading card games. One mat covers all your gaming needs.
- 3D tabletop play: Encounters take place in an immersive digital environment with three-dimensional characters and scenery.
- World building: Players and Dungeon Masters can assemble dungeons and environments using builder pieces, textures, lighting effects, and other scene elements.
- Miniature creation: Users can customize digital player and creature miniatures with different visual options, equipment, outfits, and colors, subject to account limits.
The concept is closer to staging a digital miniature game than placing tokens on a flat battle map. Sigil’s launch materials described a sandbox where users could build dungeons with traps and monsters, customize miniatures, and enter a premade adventure. The current product page and support documentation are the better sources for access limits and subscription rules, however, because those details changed after the original closed-beta and launch announcements.
How to access Sigil
- Create or use a D&D Beyond account. A paid subscription is not required for the base version.
- Download the Sigil desktop client from the official D&D Beyond Sigil page. Sigil is not simply a browser tab like a browser-based VTT.
- Sign in and complete any account linking. Accounts originally created through Apple, Google, or Twitch may prompt you to create or connect a Wizards account when Sigil launches.
- Choose how you will play. A free account can use the introductory content and join a room hosted by a Master Tier subscriber. To host multiplayer sessions yourself, you need Master Tier.
The account-linking prompt is an identity and login requirement. It does not mean that a paid D&D Beyond subscription is mandatory.
What a free account includes
The free experience is sufficient for trying Sigil, playing its introductory content, experimenting with the builder, or joining someone else’s multiplayer session. According to the official product listing, free users receive:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

- Single-player access
- The ability to join multiplayer games hosted by Master Tier subscribers
- One saved Creative Mode map
- 35 painted miniatures
- 50 custom-mini slots
- Nine custom-mini outfits
Those limits matter if you are evaluating Sigil as a campaign platform. A registered account can participate, but the free tier is not the same as having unrestricted campaign-hosting and content-management tools.

What Master Tier adds
Master Tier is the tier that turns Sigil into a multiplayer-hosting tool. Subscribers receive the ability to:
- Create and host multiplayer rooms
- Share and load maps
- Save unlimited Creative Mode maps
- Use additional builder kits
- Use unpainted miniatures
- Access expanded miniature-customization options
The most important rule is simple: free users may join multiplayer sessions, but only Master Tier users may host them. Therefore, “available to all registered accounts” should not be read as “every registered account can run a multiplayer campaign.”
Sigil versus D&D Beyond Maps
Sigil and Maps are separate D&D Beyond products, not two views of the same tabletop session.
Recommended Free Tools
| Feature | Sigil | D&D Beyond Maps |
|---|---|---|
| Presentation | Immersive 3D environments and digital miniatures | 2D tactical play space |
| Primary emphasis | 3D scene building, miniature customization, and sandbox presentation | Streamlined tactical encounters and D&D Beyond integration |
| Maps and scenes | Build scenes with environments, textures, lighting, and builder kits | Add maps and tokens within the Maps play space |
| Campaign workflow | Do not assume Maps’ campaign and Game Log features apply | Can link sessions to campaigns and connect with D&D Beyond tools |
| Long-term status | Development ended; servers are scheduled to shut down at the end of October 2026 | Not affected by the Sigil sunset and described as continuing to receive support |
D&D Beyond describes Maps as a 2D space where users can add maps and monster tokens from their digital library, add player tokens, link games to campaigns, and view rolls from character sheets and monster stat blocks in the Game Log. Those capabilities should not automatically be attributed to Sigil. If your priority is a direct connection to D&D Beyond’s library and game-management workflow, Maps is the more relevant official option.

What the 2026 sunset means
Wizards announced on October 24, 2025, that it was ending development on Sigil. The service is scheduled to remain available through the end of October 2026, with its existing features and account-tier access continuing during that period. After that, Sigil’s servers will shut down and content created in Sigil will no longer be accessible.
In practical terms:
- Do not buy or subscribe to Sigil expecting years of future feature updates.
- Do not treat a Sigil map or miniature collection as a permanent archive.
- Do not promise players that their custom scenes will remain available after October 2026.
- Use the remaining access period for temporary play, testing, or seeing what the 3D presentation offers.
- For a continuing official D&D Beyond VTT, evaluate Maps instead; its development and support are not being ended as part of the Sigil sunset.
The sunset notice also addressed certain compensation and replacement benefits. Users who used paid or trial Master Tier to access Sigil between March 1, 2025, and 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time on October 23, 2025, were offered a six-month Master Tier credit after account verification. Separately, customers who preordered the 2024 Digital and Physical Core Rulebook Bundle and received the Sigil-exclusive Gold Dragon digital miniature were told that a replacement digital dice set would be issued. Eligibility depends on the conditions in Wizards’ announcement, so readers should check the official sunset notice rather than assuming every account qualifies.

Do you need a D&D rulebook to use Sigil?
No. The official access documentation does not require ownership of a physical Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, Monster Manual, or any other retail accessory. A D&D Beyond account is the relevant starting requirement.
Rank #4
- No-Slip, No Worries: Rubber side of mat can be used to keep pieces in place or keep the mat firmly in place on table
- Magically Sealed: Not only is the mat non-slip, it's also waterproof to prevent stains and interrupting game flow
- Heavy Armor: Mat is cushioned enough to be soft, yet stiff without feeling too mushy
- Made For Melee: Either side holds game boards firmly in place. Slide cards on pattern side or have dice bounce less on rubber side
- A Strategic Advantage: Mats are designed for use with multiple tabletop games. If it's played on a table, it's best played with Roll-Play
A physical book can still be useful for groups that play both digitally and at a table. The 2024 D&D Player’s Handbook is a 384-page revised fifth-edition core rulebook containing player options, equipment, spells, and gameplay rules. It is an optional rules companion—not a Sigil license, download key, or technical prerequisite.
Groups building a broader physical reference library can also consider the 2024 core set, which consists of the Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, and Monster Manual. These books support D&D play generally, but none is established by the official Sigil documentation as required for Sigil.
Is Sigil worth trying before it closes?
That depends on what you want from a VTT.
| Choose Sigil during the remaining access period if… | Choose another approach if… |
|---|---|
| You want to experiment with a 3D D&D environment. | You need a platform with a long-term development roadmap. |
| You are happy joining a game hosted by someone with Master Tier. | You need to host multiplayer games without a Master Tier subscription. |
| You want to build temporary scenes and test miniature customization. | You need permanent access to user-created maps and content. |
| You prefer visual immersion over a lightweight tactical interface. | You want D&D Beyond’s 2D library, campaign, token, and Game Log workflow. |
For a free account, the risk is relatively low if your goal is simply to sample the software before the shutdown. The calculation is different for anyone choosing a platform for a new long-running campaign: Sigil’s fixed end-of-service date means it should not be the foundation for a campaign expected to continue beyond October 2026.
Bottom line
Sigil is live for registered D&D Beyond accounts in the limited sense that users can still download and use the service during its sunset period. Free accounts get the introductory adventure, starter building tools, limited creative assets, and the ability to join Master Tier-hosted games. Master Tier is required to host multiplayer rooms and unlocks the expanded building and customization features.

But Sigil is not an actively developed, long-term 3D VTT anymore. Development ended in October 2025, access is scheduled to end on October 31, 2026, and user-created Sigil content is expected to become inaccessible when the servers close. Try it if the 3D experience interests you; choose D&D Beyond Maps or another supported VTT if you need a lasting campaign home.
