Optional discoveries with Maria
Some of the remake’s secrets are moments of character interaction rather than items to collect. While Maria is accompanying James, optional stops around west South Vale can prompt extra dialogue. PlayStation’s replay guide also recommends exploring these places with Maria when pursuing her ending.
- The garage: Stop there with Maria to hear additional dialogue.
- The motel room: Visit while Maria is with James for another optional exchange.
- The entrance to Baldwin Mansion: Maria can comment when James stops there with her.
These interactions are easy to miss if you follow the main route without exploring. GameSpot identifies the dialogue as optional material, while PlayStation includes these locations among the interactions associated with the Maria ending. GameSpot’s roundup; PlayStation’s replay guide.

Jack’s Inn: two callbacks in one location
Maria’s original outfit
After meeting Maria, search a second-floor room at Jack’s Inn while looking for the office safe code. Maria notices clothes in a closet and teases James. GameSpot identifies the outfit as a callback to Maria’s Christina Aguilera-inspired look in the 2001 game. This is a visual reference accompanied by dialogue, not a confirmed costume unlock.
Room 106’s return visit
On the first visit to Room 106, James says the place feels wrong and suggests leaving with Maria. Return later to find peeled wallpaper revealing a red sigil painting, with a hat beside a chair. GameSpot connects the room to Heather Mason’s stay there in Silent Hill 3. It is an environmental reference, not a story development.
Both discoveries are described in GameSpot’s spoiler-marked Easter egg roundup.

After James defeats the first Flesh Lip in Brookhaven Hospital, another appears and grabs him, dragging him further into the hospital. PlayStation’s developer feature explicitly describes the surprise as an Easter egg for fans of the original game, as well as a jump scare. PlayStation.Blog’s Flesh Lip feature discusses the encounter.

Callbacks are part of the remake’s approach
The remake keeps the central characters and their emotional arcs while changing some event settings, adding locations, and altering puzzles. Bloober Team Creative Director Mateusz Lenart described the game as containing “numerous and often surprising references to the original” intended to delight longtime fans while giving players new things to solve. His comments appeared in PlayStation.Blog’s May 30, 2024 feature. That context makes the callbacks worth noticing, but it does not establish one definitive meaning for every environmental detail.
Replay secrets: all eight endings
PlayStation’s replay guide lists eight endings: Leave, In Water, Maria, Rebirth, Dog, UFO, Bliss, and Stillness. Three are available on a first playthrough; five require New Game+. Rebirth, Dog, and UFO return from the original game, while Bliss and Stillness are new to the remake. The following requirements are spoilers and come from PlayStation’s official replay guide.
Rank #4
| Ending | Availability | Documented requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Rebirth | New Game+ | Collect Crimson Ceremony in Toluca Graveyard, White Chrism outside Baldwin Mansion, Obsidian Goblet in the Historical Society, and Lost Memories in Lakeview Hotel’s Lost and Found; then finish the game. |
| Dog | New Game+ | Find both Broken Key parts—one at the Pet Center in east South Vale and one in a Katz Street backyard. Combine them and use the key to open the Lakeview Hotel Observation Room. |
| UFO | New Game+ | Get the Blue Gem from the east South Vale jewelry shop, then investigate it at four places: the Saul Street Apartments roof, Rosewater Park pier, the pier near Lakeview Hotel, and Lakeview Hotel room 312. |
| Bliss | New Game+ | Complete a scavenger hunt across town. PlayStation suggests Nathan Avenue as a starting point but does not give the specific steps on its guide page. |
| Stillness | New Game+ | Requires having seen the In Water ending on a previous run. |
The guide identifies Leave, In Water, and Maria as the three endings available on a first playthrough; it does not provide their unlock requirements in the material cited here. Its count and categories make clear that some of the game’s most substantial secrets are designed for replay, rather than for a single exhaustive first run.
Why the game rewards looking twice
From Maria’s optional conversations to Room 106’s changed appearance, several discoveries depend on taking a detour or returning to a place later. Others are deliberately gated behind New Game+. Treat the examples above as a verified selection: the cited sources establish these scenes and unlocks, not a complete inventory of every secret in the remake.
