Full spoilers for all five Silent Hill f endings. My ranking puts Coming Home to Roost last for its limited payoff and Ebisugaoka in Silence first for its added context and stronger sense of closure. The game does not declare a best ending; this order weighs narrative completeness, emotional impact, character insight, and how much new context each route adds. Unlock conditions are separate from those judgments.
How the five endings compare
Silent Hill f has five endings, with New Game+ central to reaching the alternatives. The table separates dramatic payoff from novelty: the UFO route is a comic extra, so its humor is not the same measure as plot resolution.
| Rank | Ending | Narrative closure | Character insight | Emotional impact | New context |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (lowest) | Coming Home to Roost | Low | Limited | Unsettling, but unresolved | Low |
| 2 | Fox’s Wedding | Partial | Meaningful, especially around the relationship outcome | Strong but unresolved | Moderate |
| 3 | The Fox Wets Its Tail | Stronger than Fox’s Wedding, though not definitive | More revealing about Hinako and Shu | Stronger dramatic payoff | More than the first two routes |
| 4 | The Great Space Invasion! (UFO) | Not a dramatic resolution | Little conventional character development | Comic rather than tragic | Novelty comes from the joke premise |
| 5 (highest) | Ebisugaoka in Silence | Strongest of the dramatic endings | Most satisfying in context | Strongest overall payoff | Highest |
These are critical judgments, not an official game ranking. The order reflects how well each ending completes the story and deepens its central conflict, not how difficult it is to unlock.
5. Coming Home to Roost: a deliberately incomplete first ending
This is the fixed outcome of a first playthrough, which makes it the natural starting point rather than a route to judge in isolation. On its own, it leaves questions about Hinako and the events around her unanswered. Later endings supply context that makes this one feel more like an opening perspective than a full resolution.

That limited payoff places it last here. PC Gamer’s reviewer likewise called it the worst ending in their view, while noting there is no cut-and-dried good ending. The weakness is not that the ending is meaningless; it is that it has less narrative completion than the routes that follow.
4. Fox’s Wedding: potent imagery, unresolved payoff
Fox’s Wedding makes its relationship outcome and marriage imagery central to the ending’s effect. It is compelling, but its emotional force does not translate into the clearest resolution of Hinako’s broader conflict. Its particular unlock requirements can make it feel like a special route, but difficulty or rarity is not the same as narrative superiority.
Its place above the first ending comes from the more pointed emotional and thematic material it brings forward. It remains below the next route because it gives less satisfying character and conflict payoff.

3. The Fox Wets Its Tail: a sharper dramatic turn
This route earns the higher placement by offering a stronger payoff around Hinako and Shu and by changing the dramatic progression, including an altered boss sequence. Compared with Fox’s Wedding, it feels more connected to the central conflict rather than resting mainly on the force of its relationship imagery.
It still does not provide the fullest overall closure. Its value is as a substantial alternate angle on the characters and their conflict, not as a definitive answer to every question.
2. The Great Space Invasion!: the best joke, not the best resolution
The UFO ending is a traditional joke ending, built around discovering a sequence of radio, poster, and review clues. It works on a different axis from the dramatic routes: its reward is comic surprise, not a serious conclusion to Hinako’s story.

That distinction explains its high position in this list. For entertainment and tonal contrast, it is memorable; as an account of the main story, it cannot compete with the fuller dramatic route ranked first.
1. Ebisugaoka in Silence: the strongest dramatic ending
Ebisugaoka in Silence is my top dramatic ending because its additional context makes the preceding routes feel more consequential and its closure gives Hinako’s story the fullest payoff. It is also the route commonly called the “true ending” by guides. That is a guide convention, not an official declaration that the game has one canonical best ending.

The story’s themes help explain why no single route should be treated as a simple answer key. PC Gamer’s interview coverage quotes game director Al Yang: “The main theme is women’s rights, or how that was perceived in that time.” He described the team consulting female staff about Hinako’s fears and the monsters that represent them. That context makes the ending’s character insight and emotional resolution especially resonant, but it does not prove that this route is the only intended interpretation.

How to unlock each ending
The ending outcomes are determined by route conditions, and the outcome locks when you enter the Shimizu residence, according to the Silent Hill Memories guide. Check your route before that point. The detailed conditions below come from that unofficial guide; Konami separately documents the New Game+ capsule change relevant to some routes.
| Ending | Reported conditions |
|---|---|
| Coming Home to Roost | First playthrough; the guide identifies this as the only first-run outcome. |
| Fox’s Wedding | Avoid Red Capsules; purify or do not obtain the Sacred Sword; obtain Agura no Hotei-sama. |
| The Fox Wets Its Tail | Avoid Red Capsules and obtain the unpurified Sacred Sword. |
| Ebisugaoka in Silence | Complete two different full endings; avoid Red Capsules; obtain a purified Sacred Sword; offer the Brooch. |
| The Great Space Invasion! (UFO) | Complete the radio, poster, and review discovery sequence. |
PowerPyx describes a route that earns endings two, three, and five during the second run by using saves, then starts New Game+2 for ending four after two full endings. That is a route strategy, not a requirement to follow that exact save plan.
Preventing Red Capsule placements in New Game+
Konami’s Patch 1.11 notes say that, in New Game+, reaching the front door keys to Shu’s house without using Red Capsules removes later capsule placements. This supports the no-capsule requirement for certain endings. If you use a capsule before reaching that checkpoint, the stated removal condition is no longer met.

For the strongest dramatic conclusion, choose Ebisugaoka in Silence. For a lighter detour, the UFO ending is the standout, but it is a bonus joke rather than a competing resolution. The first ending is most effective when understood as the beginning of a larger set of perspectives, not the full story.
