SILENT HILL f is a striking, self-contained horror story whose 1960s Japanese setting, unsettling imagery, music, and ambitious narrative make it memorable. Its main trade-off is a shift toward melee action: combat can interrupt the atmosphere, and difficulty tuning may feel uneven. It is a strong choice for players drawn to psychological horror and story, but less so for anyone expecting the quieter, more measured combat of Silent Hill 2.
What is Silent Hill f about?
Set in 1960s Japan, SILENT HILL f follows high school student Shimizu Hinako in the fictional town of Ebisugaoka. Fog and a disturbing transformation overtake her hometown as she confronts creatures, uncovers mysteries, and faces traumatic choices. It is the first Silent Hill entry set in Japan, with a story by Ryukishi07 and creature and character designs by kera. Konami’s launch announcement introduces the setting and creative team: Konami’s launch announcement.

The Japanese setting gives the game a distinct identity rather than simply relocating familiar series scenery. Its psychological horror is rooted in Hinako’s personal experiences and the town’s transformation, while puzzles draw on psychological anguish and Japanese cultural elements, according to series producer Motoi Okamoto. The result is a story with mystery and emotional weight, not just a sequence of scares.
Is Silent Hill f a good entry point?
Yes. Konami describes SILENT HILL f as a standalone story, and Okamoto said players can enjoy it on its own as an introduction to the series. You do not need to know the earlier games to follow Hinako’s story. Longtime fans may catch Easter eggs, but those references are an extra rather than a prerequisite. See Okamoto’s PlayStation Blog discussion of the game’s design and standalone story.

How do the combat and difficulty affect the horror?
The combat is more action-oriented and melee-focused than Silent Hill 2. That is a deliberate change in design, but it also shapes the experience: fights demand more direct engagement, and stretches of forced combat can break the tension that the story and atmosphere build. If you want horror built around vulnerability and sustained unease, the action emphasis may be the game’s biggest obstacle.
Windows Central reviewer Jez Corden praised the story and presentation but criticized uneven difficulty tuning and some encounters, including late-game forced combat and a noticeable gap between Hard and Story difficulty. That is one critic’s assessment, not a measure of consensus. Players who enjoy demanding action-horror may be more comfortable with the combat; those mainly interested in the narrative should weigh the difficulty options against their tolerance for challenging encounters. Corden’s review also records his platform-specific observations: on Xbox Series X, he found quality mode choppy to him, used performance mode, and still saw occasional issues. Those impressions describe his setup, not guaranteed performance on every system.

What are the game’s strongest elements?
Atmosphere and visual design
Ebisugaoka’s transformation provides a vivid, unsettling backdrop for Hinako’s story. The art direction and creature designs help the horror feel specific to this setting, rather than interchangeable with another ruined town. The visual approach is one of the clearest reasons to play, particularly if you value horror that creates a strong sense of place.
Story and music
The narrative’s personal focus and mysteries give the game more to offer than its encounters alone. The music reinforces its oppressive mood. Windows Central’s review singled out the story, art, setting, and music as strengths, while the official product materials credit the game’s creative team and music contributors: Konami’s EU product page.

It also says the game’s depiction of 1960s Japan draws on customs and culture of that period and does not represent the opinions or values of the developers or others involved. Review the PlayStation Store listing if these subjects may affect your decision to play.

Play it if you want a visually distinctive psychological horror story, a Japanese setting new to the series, and music and imagery that sustain a strong mood. Go in expecting more melee action than Silent Hill 2, including encounters that may disrupt that mood and difficulty tuning that one reviewer found uneven. As a standalone story it welcomes newcomers; whether its action-heavy stretches work for you is the key question.
