What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For a more manageable playthrough, adjust the setting that matches what is getting in your way: choose Story combat difficulty to reduce enemy pressure, or Hinted puzzle difficulty to make important text clues easier to spot. These are reported as separate choices, so you can use puzzle help without lowering combat difficulty—or the reverse. The mode names and effects below are reported by TechRadar’s September 2026 review; the US PlayStation Store listing confirms an easier alternative preset but does not describe the named modes.
What difficulty should you play Silent Hill: Townfall on?
Pick Story if enemies or stealth encounters are stopping your progress. Pick Hinted if the obstacle is finding or interpreting written clues. If neither is a problem, Normal is the baseline TechRadar says the developers intend. These options address different parts of the game rather than forming one overall easy-to-hard scale.

Combat difficulty
| Mode | Reported effect | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| Story | Reduces the threat posed by enemies. | Combat or evasion is making it hard to progress. |
| Normal | Described by TechRadar as the intended baseline. | You want the review’s stated standard combat challenge. |
| Nightmare | Increases enemy power and makes your flashlight detectable to enemies. | You want more demanding combat and stealth. |
These effects are reported by Lewis Maddison in TechRadar’s September 2026 review, which says the reviewer completed a playthrough on Normal. They are review reporting, not descriptions supplied by the PlayStation Store.
Puzzle difficulty
| Mode | Reported effect |
|---|---|
| Normal | The standard puzzle mode reported in the review. |
| Hinted | Highlights salient text clues in red. |
Hinted makes relevant written clues more visible; the review does not say it automatically solves puzzles. Maddison reports toggling between Normal and Hinted during the review playthrough.

Can you change difficulty in Silent Hill: Townfall?
The US PlayStation Store listing confirms that the game has an alternative preset difficulty that reduces overall challenge. It does not name the preset or explain how the combat and puzzle choices work. For those details, the named modes and effects above are specifically reported by TechRadar’s post-release review. Check the current in-game menus on your platform and game version for the available labels and options.
How to make Townfall more manageable beyond difficulty
Townfall is a first-person psychological horror game set in Scotland in 1996. The PlayStation Store describes exploration, evasion and survival with limited weapons and tools, including the handheld CRTV. Official PlayStation material describes a mix of stealth and combat: players can run, distract, hide or fight, while alerted enemies may track them.

In a February 12, 2026 PlayStation Blog post, Writer and Director Jon McKellan said, “While there are many different melee and ranged weapons to use in a pinch, sometimes fighting isn’t the best option.” The same post’s Silent Hill Series Producer, Motoi Okamoto, described “A rich narrative, challenging puzzles, and moments of quick-thinking during stealth” as elements of the experience. Neither statement names or explains difficulty-menu settings.
Use the CRTV and cover to manage awareness
A September 21, 2026 PlayStation Blog feature by Phil Hornshaw explains that the first-person view gives you less visibility of your surroundings than a third-person perspective. Pay attention to threats at your sides and behind you; the feature describes tuning the CRTV to see nearby enemy positions, sneaking behind objects, peeking around cover and hiding. These are gameplay approaches, not settings guaranteed to remove the challenge.
