To capture a game screenshot at full resolution, use a capture method that preserves the image you want, then check the saved original file’s pixel dimensions and format. “Full resolution” can mean the game’s render resolution, the display’s output resolution, or the dimensions of the saved image; those are not always the same, especially when upscaling is involved. For a fair comparison, capture the same scene from the same viewpoint with matching settings, and inspect both originals at 100% scale.
What “full resolution” means for a game screenshot
Three different resolutions can matter:
- Render resolution: the dimensions at which the game renders its image.
- Display or output resolution: the dimensions sent to the monitor. Upscaling can make this differ from the render resolution.
- Saved-image dimensions: the width and height, in pixels, of the screenshot file.
A file’s dimensions tell you how many pixels it contains, but not by themselves whether those pixels came directly from the game’s render or from an upscaled output. NVIDIA notes that with GPU-level Image Scaling, software capture may remain at the lower, pre-upscaled resolution; its guidance describes driver-level capture support for saving the upscaled result. Check NVIDIA’s Image Scaling guidance and current driver behavior if you use that feature.

Steam games on PC
Steam Overlay can capture screenshots in Steam games. F12 is the default screenshot hotkey; you can change it in Steam’s In-Game settings. Steamworks also documents screenshot API support and library integration. See Steam’s screenshot help or the Steamworks screenshot documentation. This method depends on the Overlay being available for the game.

Windows command line, including SDR and HDR
Microsoft’s GDK wdcapture screenshot command uses Windows Graphics Capture. Its documentation describes SDR output as PNG and HDR output as JXR, supports choosing a filepath and display, and lists Windows 10 or later as a prerequisite. Confirm that the application and game expose the content you want to this capture route. Read the wdcapture documentation.
If HDR matters, check the saved format and whether the capture route retains the intended HDR data. A file extension alone does not establish that every part of the HDR workflow is correct.

AMD ReLive
AMD’s documentation describes ReLive screenshot and gameplay-capture options for supported hardware and software configurations. Capture resolution is configurable; its In-Game recording output automatically matches the resolution used in the game. Check the capture settings rather than assuming the saved result’s dimensions. When Image Scaling is enabled, do not assume a regular software screenshot will have the upscaled display dimensions. NVIDIA’s article identifies GeForce Experience Alt+F1 screenshots as a supported driver-level route at the time it was published. Driver behavior and menus can change, so check the current capture options for your setup. NVIDIA’s Image Scaling article explains the distinction.

Game photo modes
Some games offer special high-resolution or “super resolution” photo-mode captures. Check the specific game’s documentation or photo-mode controls; the feature is not universal. NVIDIA’s 2017 article on Tekken 7 describes a Super Resolution capture option. It also notes that larger images may require a 64-bit application to view or edit. Read the historical Tekken 7 example.
Windows desktop capture
Windows Snipping Tool can capture the full screen, but Microsoft’s cited support page does not establish that it preserves a game’s render resolution or HDR pipeline. Treat it as a desktop capture option, then inspect the saved file rather than assuming it represents the game’s native render. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions.

Set up a repeatable comparison
- Choose a stable scene. Keep the camera position, game resolution, graphics settings, and UI state consistent between captures.
- Change one setting at a time. If you are comparing anti-aliasing, sharpening, or upscaling, hold the other settings constant and record the changed option next to each file.
- Use the same capture route and format where possible. If you must use different routes, note that difference; capture stage and file format can affect what you are comparing.
- Preserve the original files. Do not treat a thumbnail or an upload that may have been resized as the source image.
Verify the saved screenshot
Open the original file in an image application or inspect its file properties. Record its width × height in pixels and its format, then compare those dimensions with the game’s render and display/output resolutions. This check confirms the saved file’s dimensions; it does not, on its own, prove how the image was rendered or whether it was upscaled.
If the goal is an HDR capture, verify that the capture method and resulting file preserve the HDR data you need. Microsoft documents JXR for HDR output from wdcapture; its SDR output is PNG.

Compare screenshots without misleading yourself
- Match the scene and viewpoint. Compare equivalent content, not merely two images that look broadly similar.
- Inspect at original scale. Use 100% pixel scale or synchronized zoom in an image viewer to examine fine detail and edges.
- Check dimensions before comparing detail. If the files differ in width or height, resizing one changes the relationship between its pixels and the other image. If you resize for a side-by-side view, disclose that.
- Look at useful crops. Inspect areas with fine textures, thin edges, or other detail relevant to the setting you changed.
- Keep a record of capture settings. Note the game resolution, relevant graphics options, capture route, and file format for each image.
These steps support a controlled visual comparison, not a benchmark. A video recording is also not interchangeable with a still-image capture: Steam notes that Game Recording can miss frames when gameplay starts, ends, or changes resolution.
