The short answer: which game should you play next?
Silent Hill: Townfall is the better next game for a player who wants a new protagonist, a Scottish setting and a first-person psychological-horror format. Its portable CRTV receives unstable analog signals that become clues for story-linked puzzles, while encounters can be handled through stealth, evasion, melee or firearms.
The Silent Hill 2 remake is the better choice for someone drawn to James Sunderland’s established story. James travels to Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his long-dead wife, Mary. The remake uses an over-the-shoulder camera, exploration, puzzles and combat designed around his vulnerability rather than power.
#1 Best Overall
- Fully Remade to terrify modern audiences
- KONAMI's intense psychological horror masterpiece SILENT HILL 2 is made exclusively for PlayStation 5
- The main protagonist James Sunderland searches for clues in the namesake town, after receiving a mysterious letter from his wife Mary… who has long been dead
- Experience the eerie monsters and other manifestations of James' consciousness reworked after 20 years
- Made with state-of-the-art technology to play on modern entertainment systems in 4K
If your only concern is sequence, start with either one. Nothing in the official sources reviewed requires Silent Hill 2 first, and Steam explicitly presents Townfall as self-contained.

What Silent Hill: Townfall is
A self-contained story with a new protagonist
Townfall follows Simon Ordell on St. Amelia, a Scottish island, in 1996. Steam’s store description calls it a self-contained psychological-horror game. That wording matters: you can approach Simon’s situation without knowing James Sunderland, the plot of the earlier games or the events of the Silent Hill 2 remake.

Shared series identity and thematic connections should not be mistaken for a confirmed play-order requirement.
First-person horror and the CRTV
Townfall is described as the series’ first full-length first-person game. That viewpoint places the player directly behind Simon’s eyes rather than observing him from behind. It also changes how environmental information is delivered: a portable CRTV receives unstable analog signals, and those signals provide clues for puzzles tied to the story.
Writer and director Jon McKellan of Screen Burn Interactive said the concept of changing the series’ radio to a CRTV existed “from the very start of development.” The device is therefore more than a cosmetic period prop; it is the central investigation tool identified in the game’s official description.
Flexible responses to encounters
The Steam description and developer comments identify stealth, evasion, melee and firearms as possible approaches. The developers frame encounters as situations in which players can choose how to respond, rather than as a single prescribed combat routine. If you prefer avoiding threats, observing spaces and deciding when to engage, those systems make Townfall the more natural fit of the two.

What the Silent Hill 2 remake is
James Sunderland’s search for Mary
The remake centers on James Sunderland, who goes to Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his wife Mary even though she has been dead. That premise supplies the game’s immediate motivation and keeps James and Maria central to its presentation, according to PlayStation’s developer coverage.
This is a reimagining of the 2001 Silent Hill 2, not a new standalone protagonist’s story. Players choosing it are entering James’s specific narrative and the remake’s interpretation of that material. The cited creative director, Mateusz Lenart of Bloober Team, described the project as “a remake with respect toward the original.”
Over-the-shoulder exploration and survival combat
PlayStation’s developer article identifies an over-the-shoulder camera. You see James from behind as he explores, solves puzzles and confronts threats. The perspective gives the remake a different rhythm from a first-person game: the character remains visible, and the camera emphasizes his movement through the environment.
Rank #3
- UK PSN account may be required for any online features
The remake expands combat options, but its design still treats James as vulnerable. The documented description presents fighting as a desperate survival struggle, and running away can be the correct response. Select this game if you want combat to sit alongside exploration and puzzle-solving without turning James into an overpowering action hero.
Do you need to play one before the other?
No mandatory order is established
There is no required order in the official information available for these two games. Steam explicitly calls Townfall self-contained. The sources reviewed also do not establish that playing Silent Hill 2 unlocks context needed to understand Simon Ordell’s story.
Likewise, choosing Townfall first does not create a documented prerequisite for the remake. The games can be treated as separate entry points unless a future official statement establishes a connection that is not currently documented.
Why the order can still matter to your experience
Although order is not required, your preference may affect which style feels freshest. Starting with Townfall gives you a first-person, signal-driven mystery before you try the remake’s over-the-shoulder interpretation of James’s story. Starting with Silent Hill 2 gives you a character-led survival-horror structure first, followed by Townfall’s distinct island setting and CRTV investigation.
Choose Townfall if these priorities sound right
- You want first-person horror. The game is presented in first person throughout, making it the clear choice between these two for that viewpoint.
- You prefer a new story entry point. Simon Ordell and St. Amelia provide a separate premise rather than James Sunderland’s established search for Mary.
- You enjoy investigating devices and signals. The portable CRTV receives unstable analog broadcasts that become puzzle clues connected to the narrative.
- You want more than direct combat. Stealth, evasion, melee and firearms are all described, and developers say players can experiment with encounter choices.
- You like period-specific atmosphere. The store description places the self-contained story in Scotland in 1996.
Pick this route when the viewpoint and interaction model matter more to you than following the most familiar Silent Hill protagonist.

Choose the Silent Hill 2 remake if these priorities sound right
- You want James Sunderland’s story. The letter from his dead wife, Mary, is the central reason he returns to Silent Hill.
- You prefer an over-the-shoulder camera. The remake keeps James visible during exploration and encounters rather than placing you in a full-time first-person view.
- You want survival combat with a vulnerable protagonist. The documented design emphasizes desperation, expanded options and the possibility that escaping is wiser than fighting.
- You are interested in a respectful remake. Bloober Team creative director Mateusz Lenart characterized it as a remake made with respect toward the original.
- You want the platforms named for the remake. Konami’s announcement identifies PS5 and PC Steam; check your regional storefront for current availability.
Choose this route when a specific character narrative and the remake’s third-person survival-horror presentation are the deciding factors.

Townfall
Konami’s US announcement says Silent Hill: Townfall released on September 24, 2026 for PS5, Steam and the Epic Games Store. Steam’s store listing displays September 23, 2026. Those dates may reflect different regional or storefront timing, so cite the relevant store when precision matters rather than presenting one date as universal.
Steam lists Screen Burn as the developer and Konami and Annapurna Interactive as publishers. The game is described there as a self-contained psychological-horror title set in Scotland in 1996. Store availability, editions and regional release timing can change, so verify the live listing before purchasing.
Silent Hill 2 remake
Konami’s announcement names PS5 and PC Steam for the remake. PlayStation announced October 8, 2024 as its release date. These sources establish the named platforms and date, but they do not verify current retailer stock, disc formats or every regional storefront’s present offer.
What the series sales figure means
Konami’s 2026 US announcement says the Silent Hill series had sold over 17.8 million copies worldwide as of the end of June 2026. Konami’s note says that total includes units shipped, store downloads and subscription services. It should therefore be read as a combined series performance figure, not as physical-unit sales alone and not as sales for either of these two games individually.

A practical decision path
- Decide whether you need a specific story. If you want James Sunderland and Mary’s letter, start with the Silent Hill 2 remake. If you want Simon Ordell and a new island setting, start with Townfall.
- Choose your camera. Select Townfall for first person; select the remake for over-the-shoulder play.
- Choose your main interaction. Select Townfall if a portable CRTV, signal investigation and flexible stealth-or-combat encounters appeal to you. Select the remake if exploration, puzzles and desperate survival combat are the priority.
- Check your hardware and storefront. Confirm that your region lists the PS5, Steam or Epic Games Store version you intend to use. The two release-date listings for Townfall show why storefront-specific dates can differ.
- Start with either game. No documented prerequisite requires the other title first.
Common points of confusion
“Self-contained” does not mean “unrelated in every way”
It means Steam presents Townfall as a complete story that does not require another game as a starting lesson. The available official material does not prove a direct continuity dependency between it and the remake; it also does not warrant claiming that the games share no thematic or future connection at all.
Different release dates do not necessarily indicate a delay
Konami’s US announcement gives September 24, 2026 for Townfall, while Steam displays September 23, 2026. A one-day difference can result from regional or storefront conventions. Use the date shown by the store serving your region.
More weapons does not make the remake an action game
The remake has expanded combat options, but PlayStation’s description still frames James as vulnerable and sometimes better off running. The documented contrast is between survival pressure and power fantasy, not between “no combat” and “constant action.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Play Silent Hill: Townfall next if you want the series’ first full-length first-person format, a self-contained Scottish story, CRTV-based investigation and multiple ways to handle encounters. Play the Silent Hill 2 remake next if you want James Sunderland’s story, an over-the-shoulder camera and vulnerable survival combat. Neither game has a documented prerequisite, so the right starting point is the one whose perspective and premise match what you want to play now.
