KONAMI’s published descriptions do not say that SILENT HILL: Townfall requires prior knowledge of SILENT HILL 2. Choose Townfall if its first-person perspective and Simon Ordell’s story on a remote Scottish island appeal to you; choose the SILENT HILL 2 remake if you want to follow James Sunderland and prefer an over-the-shoulder view. That is a choice based on their published premises and presentation, not a claim that one is better.
Do you need to play Silent Hill 2 before Townfall?
No required order is stated in the KONAMI material reviewed. The games have different named protagonists and different official story premises: Townfall follows Simon Ordell on St. Amelia, while the SILENT HILL 2 remake follows James Sunderland in Silent Hill. That information supports playing either one first, but it does not establish whether the games share any deeper continuity or connections.

Choose Townfall first if you want its first-person approach
Townfall is the natural first pick if you are more interested in exploring horror from a first-person perspective than in revisiting James Sunderland’s story. Its announced play elements include evading threats, combat, and puzzles tied closely to the narrative. KONAMI also identifies a CRTV pocket television as part of Simon’s story and experience.
As of October 13, 2026, KONAMI lists the game for PS5, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. Its U.S. pre-release announcement said the physical edition was available only for PS5. That statement concerns the U.S. announcement; check local listings for current regional editions and availability.
#1 Best Overall
- Day One Edition Bonus: CRTV Style: Rusted, CRTV Style: Beach Edition
- Returning to an island town to ‘put things right’, Simon Ordell descends into a world of tense evasion, explosive confrontations, and mind-bending puzzles that slowly surface the truth of St. Amelia
- Simon Ordell is called back to the island of St. Amelia to ‘put things right’, encountering a town lying quiet beneath a heavy fog, seemingly abandoned but not at rest
- Venturing deeper, and driven to understand his connection to the place and its inhabitants, Simon begins to discover fragments of a past rising to the surface
- Experienced entirely in first person, Simon must explore, evade, and survive using a limited set of weapons and tools, including the CRTV, a pocket television used to tune into unstable signals. Evasion is tense; combat is frenetic, while narrative driven puzzles reveal a truth that refuses to stay submerged
Choose the Silent Hill 2 remake first if James’s story is your priority
Start with the SILENT HILL 2 remake if James Sunderland’s story and the town he and Mary used to visit are the draw. Its over-the-shoulder view is a different approach from Townfall’s first-person presentation. KONAMI describes the remake as expanding explorable areas, revamping combat, and adding cut-scenes.
KONAMI has reported dated sales milestones for this remake: one million combined physical retail and digital copies in less than one week, counted through October 11, 2024, after its October 8 launch; and two million combined physical and digital units as of its January 29, 2025 announcement. These figures describe the remake, not a current lifetime total.
Rank #2
- Day One Edition Bonus: CRTV Style: Rusted, CRTV Style: Beach Edition
- When Simon Ordell is called back to the island of St. Amelia to "put things in order", he meets a city lying quietly in dense fog, seemingly abandoned, yet anything but dormant
- After venturing further to understand his connection to this place and its inhabitants, he gradually discovers fragments of the past rising to the surface
- Simon must explore, evade and survive from a first-person perspective. It uses a limited arsenal of weapons and tools, including the CRTV: a portable TV to receive unstable signals
- The dodging is tension, the battles are hectic and the story-based puzzles reveal a truth that does not want to remain hidden
Does the play order change what you can play?
Not according to the reviewed publisher information: it does not state a prerequisite or required order. The practical decision is therefore which premise and perspective you want first, rather than a confirmed story chronology. If you intend to buy a physical copy, the format information is also different: KONAMI’s U.S. announcement specified a PS5-only physical edition for Townfall, while it reports physical and digital sales for the SILENT HILL 2 remake. Current editions and stock can vary by region.
