In Hollow Knight: Silksong, reach Architect’s Melody by taking the long lower route through Cogwork Core, climbing into the upper section with Clawline, and solving four independent musical pillars. Each pillar’s four rotating segments must form one continuous vertical score. Once all four pillars descend, stand on the central plate and use the Needolin.
This guide covers the Act 2 version of Cogwork Core. Act 3 changes the area substantially, so its upper route is not expected to work the same way.

Requirements
- Defeat the Cogwork Dancers to open access to Cogwork Core through Choral Chambers. See the area overview on Hollow Knight Wiki.
- Obtain Clawline. The upper route requires grapples and wall movement, but Double Jump is not mandatory.
- Have the Needolin available. It is required after the puzzle is complete.
The current listed game version is 1.0.30000. The latest published patch notes do not list a Cogwork Core or Architect’s Melody change, but puzzle layouts and access can differ in the Act 3 route.

Optional: get the area map first
If you want the Cogwork Core map before attempting the climb, re-enter the Cogwork Dancers arena, drop through either opening, and enter the white-lit building. Rotate the ceiling wheel to produce the bench, then use the plate above it to unlock the map. The area layout is also documented at MapSilksong’s Cogwork Core page.

The important route correction
Do not try to reach the melody room by climbing directly above the Dancers arena. From the lower central Core, follow the route down and around the left side, then climb back upward on the right. The upper entrance is reached by looping through the lower sawblade and gear sections.
- Enter Cogwork Core from Choral Chambers after defeating the Cogwork Dancers.
- Follow the lower-left platforming route through the machinery.
- Cross the grapple-ring sections and move along the walls beside the retracting spikes.
- Use the long horizontal grapple, then release early enough to catch the lower ring or the next wall instead of colliding with the hazard.
- Pogo across the rotating spike-cogs. Aim for the upper part of each cog’s arc so you retain height and avoid the side hazards.
- Navigate the rapid two-hook sequence near the final approach.
- Enter the upper section above the Dancers. Open the Clawline shortcut here if you want a faster return route later.
- Continue through the moving-hook section, defeat the Cogwork enemies blocking the route, and open the gate.
- Leave through the upper-left ceiling exit to enter the Architect’s Melody chamber.
There is no bench inside the puzzle room. Restore Silk at the previous bench if you plan to use Silk-based attacks or binds during the approach, and be prepared for a long reclimb if you fall near the final lever.
Movement trouble spots
Retracting-spike walls
Wait for the spikes to withdraw, then commit to one ledge at a time. Trying to climb while they are extended usually causes avoidable damage.

Long grapples
Do not hold the grapple until the very end of the line by habit. Release before the endpoint when the next wall or ring is positioned below or beyond the hazard. Releasing too late can make Hornet overshoot the catch or strike the obstacle.
Rotating spike-cogs
Pogo high on the cog rather than near its lower edge. The extra height makes the next grapple or wall catch more reliable and keeps Hornet away from the surrounding hazards.
The final lever
The furthest lever near the last pillar may require a short wall jump. Falling here sends you back through much of the approach because the puzzle chamber has no bench.

How the Architect’s Melody puzzle works
The room has four freestanding pillars. Each pillar contains four rotating musical-sheet segments operated by nearby levers. Your objective is to make the music continuous from the top segment to the bottom segment of each individual pillar.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou are not matching the four pillars to one another. Each is a separate vertical-connection puzzle.
A pillar is correct when its staff lines, note stems, and beamed notes connect cleanly across all three joins between its four segments. When a pillar is completed, its associated temporary platforms disappear.

A reliable solving method
- Light the room. Strike the floor spotlight to nudge its direction. Good lighting makes the staff lines and note joins much easier to read.
- Choose one pillar. Inspect the boundary between adjacent segments rather than trying to recognize the entire score at once.
- Align the staff lines first. A correct join should have no broken horizontal staff line or visible offset.
- Check the notation. Make sure note stems line up and that a beam does not end in empty space at a segment boundary.
- Preserve the platforms. A safe approach is to solve three of a pillar’s four segments, leave the final segment unfinished, and repeat this on the other pillars. Completing a pillar removes its temporary platforms, which can restrict movement around the room.
- Finish the pillars one at a time. Once all four have three correct segments, complete them in an order that keeps the awkward footing accessible. Leave the least convenient pillar until last if necessary.
- Activate the melody. After all four pillars descend, stand on the central plate. When the contextual prompt appears, use the Needolin.
The sequence then plays and Hornet learns Architect’s Melody. The final Needolin interaction is part of the solution; finishing the pillars alone does not award the melody.
When a segment seems impossible to align
If you cycle the lower segment through its available rotations and no option creates a clean join, the problem is usually the segment above it. Correct the upper segment first, then return to the lower one. Do not assume that every segment can be solved independently from top to bottom without revisiting an earlier choice.

Use these checks at every boundary:
- The staff lines continue without a break.
- Note stems are not shifted sideways at the join.
- Beamed notes continue into the next segment rather than terminating in empty space.
- The bottom of one segment agrees with the top of the next.
Is there a fixed lever sequence?
No universal left/right or button-count solution is established for this puzzle. Guides may describe visual anchors such as whole notes, eighth notes, or beamed-note arrangements, but the dependable method is to inspect the current orientation of your segments and align each adjacent join. A fixed sequence would only be useful if the starting orientations matched.

What Architect’s Melody unlocks
Architect’s Melody is one part of the Threefold Melody. It is not, by itself, the key to the Cradle. You must also obtain the Conductor’s Melody and the Vaultkeeper’s Melody before the Threefold Melody can open the route to the Cradle. More background on the item is available on the Architect’s Melody reference page.
Act 2 and Act 3 caveat
This route describes the Act 2 Cogwork Core. In Act 3, the area changes substantially and the upper section associated with Architect’s Melody is part of the ruined or inaccessible route. If you are playing Act 3, do not treat the missing climb or altered room as a movement error; the original Act 2 route is not expected to be repeatable in the same form.
