You do not need to find every mass: the Hollow Knight Wiki lists 47 known in the world, or 45 in Steel Soul Mode, though those community-maintained totals are not an official game statistic.
How to unlock and complete Dark Hearts
- Reach Act 3. GameSpot places the wish after the Act 2 progression point Silk and Soul. The Hollow Knight Wiki lists SEEK: Awaiting the End as the prerequisite.
- Accept Dark Hearts at Bellhart. Find it on the Wishwall. The wish is given by Bellhart’s residents, who describe black mounds corrupting the roads.
- Destroy 12 Void Masses. Any qualifying targets in Pharloom count; you are not required to clear a particular region. The wiki reports that Void Masses defeated before accepting the wish count toward the total.
- Return to Bellhart’s Wishwall. Interact with it after reaching 12 to collect the Mask Shard reward.
Where to find Void Masses
The routes below are landmark directions, not an exhaustive coordinate map. GameSpot identifies these candidate locations; use them to reach the required twelve without treating any regional list as complete.
The Marrow and Mosshome
- Check the room directly left of the Moss Druid.
- Look in the nook below and left of the Bellway.
- From a bench, go down and then right to reach another room.
- Follow the platform route near the Deep Docks exit.
- Check the ceiling near Bellhart’s bottom exit.
Far Fields
- Look left of the Bellway and bench.
- Check the chamber opposite the vendor hut and bench.
- Follow the route toward the main boss associated with the Old Hearts quest.
Greymoor
- Go through the vines left of Bellbeast and enter the cellar.
- Check the wooden scaffolding above the path to Bellhart’s eastern exit.
- Look near the top of the open area opposite a Spool Fragment dais.
Shellwood
- Check below the bench on the right near the Bellhart exit.
- Look on the ledge to the left of that bench.
Blasted Steps
- Search along the main path to Grand Gate.
- Return to the room where you fought Great Conchflies earlier.
For spatial context beyond these landmark routes, Guides4Gamers’ Void Masses points-of-interest map links locations to its map controls. Its text listing does not provide coordinates, so consult the map itself for the position of individual points.
How to recognize a Void Mass
Void Masses are stationary enemies attached to walls or ceilings, not harmless pickups. Affected rooms can have altered enemy rosters: susceptible enemies may appear already threaded with black corruption. That corrupted appearance is a practical clue, and the Hollow Knight Wiki also reports howling wind and faint, garbled voices as audio cues.

How to fight one safely
Void Masses attack despite being immobile. The Hollow Knight Wiki describes tendril lashes and volleys of three projectiles. Enter a suspected room carefully, deal with nearby corrupted enemies, then attack the mass while watching for both attacks. The wiki says destroyed masses generally do not respawn; it notes an exception involving two near Styx under a specific Classic Mode condition.
How many Void Masses are in each region?
The Hollow Knight Wiki’s regional count is useful for choosing where to search, but it is community-maintained rather than a developer-published statistic. Counts are not a route or requirement: Dark Hearts needs only twelve, and the available sources do not reconcile every regional figure with landmark guides.

Which route should you choose?
If you want a compact set of landmark leads, start with The Marrow and Mosshome: GameSpot calls The Marrow a quick route and lists several nearby targets. Its article gives five Marrow-area directions, while the wiki’s regional table counts four for The Marrow, so treat those directions as candidate locations rather than a verified regional total. If the landmarks are inconvenient, choose another region using the wiki’s community count or the map-linked points of interest.
