Hollow Knight: Silksong launched on September 4, 2025, and Steam’s Store immediately began struggling under the rush of players trying to buy and download it. Users reported slow or unavailable Store pages, failed carts and checkouts, Steam’s “E502 L3” error, and download delays. The timing strongly links the disruption to launch-day demand, although Valve did not publicly confirm that Silksong alone caused the underlying technical failure.
What happened when Silksong launched?
The game’s reported launch time was approximately 10 a.m. Eastern, 7 a.m. Pacific, and 3 p.m. British Summer Time on September 4. Within minutes, Steam users began reporting problems across the purchase and download process.

- Steam Store pages loaded slowly or failed to load.
- Some users saw a generic “Something Went Wrong” message.
- Others encountered Steam’s E502 L3 error.
- Players were unable to add Silksong to their carts or complete checkout.
- Some successful purchasers experienced delays before the game appeared in their libraries or began downloading.
These reports did not mean that every Steam function failed for every user. The most consistent problems involved the Store, transactions, entitlement delivery, and downloads.

How widespread was the Steam disruption?
DownDetector showed a sharp increase in Steam problem reports immediately after the release window. Ars Technica reported a peak of more than 11,000 reports, while The Guardian cited approximately 3,750 reports at a different point in its coverage. Those figures represent user-submitted reports, not confirmed outages or an exact count of affected players.

The safest summary is that Steam received a major spike in complaints, with the reported total varying according to when and where it was measured. The pattern is consistent with a widespread Store disruption, but it does not prove that all Steam users or all Steam services were offline.
Was all of Steam down?
No. “Steam went down” is too broad without qualification. The available reporting primarily describes failures involving:
- Store availability and product pages
- Adding games to carts
- Checkout and payment confirmation
- Library access and downloads
Some users could still log in, access parts of the client, or play games they already owned. A Store outage also does not necessarily stop installed games or every multiplayer and account service. Tom’s Guide reported that the Store began working again while some users were still encountering problems, showing that recovery was uneven.

Did Silksong cause Steam to crash?
The evidence strongly supports a connection in timing and demand, but it does not establish a confirmed technical root cause.
The Steam problem graph rose sharply around the launch time, and contemporary reports from multiple outlets described matching purchase and download failures. Silksong was also one of the most anticipated games in years, launching simultaneously across several platforms at a $19.99 U.S. price.
However, no reviewed Valve incident report identifies Silksong traffic as the sole cause. DownDetector is based on user reports rather than direct server telemetry. The most accurate conclusion is that the launch appears to have created or contributed to an exceptional demand surge that coincided with a major Steam Store disruption.

It is also plausible that the absence of a conventional preorder period concentrated traffic around release. That may have amplified the rush, but it has not been established as the decisive cause.
The purchase flow failed at several points
This was more than a homepage-loading problem. Players encountered failures at different stages of the launch process:
- Product page: The Store page could be slow or unavailable.
- Cart: Some users could not add the game.
- Checkout: Others reached checkout but could not finish payment.
- Confirmation: A failed-looking transaction could still require verification before another attempt.
- Library and download: Successful purchases did not always lead immediately to a visible entitlement or working download.
That distinction matters because a checkout error does not always mean that payment failed. Anyone affected should check Steam purchase history and the game library before trying to buy again.

Other gaming stores also reported problems
The disruption was not limited to Steam. Contemporary reports described problems affecting Nintendo’s eShop, the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, and Xbox services around the same launch period. The severity varied by platform and region, so this should not be read as proof that every storefront failed in exactly the same way.
The wider pattern suggests an unusually concentrated demand event across digital distribution systems. Silksong launched simultaneously on multiple platforms, was sold at a relatively low launch price, and was available day one through Xbox Game Pass. Those factors could all have contributed to a large burst of users seeking access at once.

How long did the outage last?
The worst problems eased later on September 4, with recovery occurring progressively rather than at one universal moment. Tom’s Guide reported that the Store had begun functioning again while some users continued to see errors. IsDown’s third-party incident record estimated an incident duration of roughly four hours.
Best Value
That estimate should be treated as approximate. Availability could differ by region, account, function, and network, and the evidence does not establish one exact restoration time for every user.
What affected users could do
- Check before retrying payment. Review Steam purchase history and your library to make sure the transaction did not complete.
- Wait before repeatedly refreshing checkout. Repeated attempts can create confusion around pending or completed payments.
- Distinguish a platform outage from a local problem. Check Steam’s support guidance and current service reports first.
- Restart the client only after broader services recover. This can refresh a stale session, but it will not fix a platform-wide Store failure.
- For download-only problems, try another download region later. Changing regions may help with a localized download issue, but it is not a guaranteed solution during a global Store disruption.
Steam’s official support guidance recommends first determining whether a problem is system-wide and then checking local network connectivity: Steam Support troubleshooting.
The bottom line
Silksong did launch into a real and unusually widespread Steam Store disruption on September 4, 2025. Thousands of users reported errors, and the timing makes the launch-day demand surge the obvious apparent trigger. But the available evidence does not prove that Silksong alone caused a total Steam outage. The more precise description is a major, launch-related failure affecting Steam Store access, purchasing, and downloads, with recovery taking place over several hours.
