Microsoft’s redesigned Xbox Cloud Gaming web experience is available as a public preview. To try it, open xbox.com/play, sign in, enable Preview Features in Settings, wait up to 10 minutes, and then open play.xbox.com.
You do not need an Xbox console or a Game Pass subscription merely to view the preview dashboard. Playing most cloud games is different: you need an eligible Game Pass plan or a supported free-to-play title, along with a compatible device, browser, connection, and controller or touch support.

This is a redesigned browser interface for Xbox Cloud Gaming—not a new console, downloadable game client, or separate streaming service. Microsoft is testing refreshed navigation and a new product flow before a broader rollout.
#1 Best Overall
- MODERNIZED DESIGN — Experience the modernized design of the XBOX Wireless Controller with sculpted surfaces and updated geometry that enhances comfort and control during long gaming sessions.
- PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.
- SHARE BUTTON: Seamlessly capture and share content such as screenshots, recordings, and more with the new Share button.
- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY — Connect via USB-C for plug-and-play on console and PC, or quickly pair and switch between supported devices with XBOX Wireless and Bluetooth support.
- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
The preview is intended to feel more like the wider Xbox interface. Hands-on coverage from Windows Central describes an app-like layout with a sidebar and preview options identified as Desktop Mode and Full Screen Mode. Those labels and arrangements may change while the preview is being developed.
Microsoft warns that preview features can be unavailable or behave differently from the existing experience. The redesign should therefore be treated as an interface experiment, not a finalized replacement.
Who can use it?
The browser opt-in is publicly available, although rollout behavior can vary by account, device, region, and time. Microsoft’s access instructions require a compatible browser and Microsoft/Xbox account; they do not require Xbox Insider membership or ownership of an Xbox console.

| What you want to do | What you need |
|---|---|
| View the preview dashboard | A Microsoft/Xbox account, supported browser, and preview availability |
| Play most cloud games | An eligible Game Pass plan, supported game, device, region, browser, connection, and controller or touch support |
| Play select free-to-play games | A free Microsoft account and availability in a supported region; the game must support cloud play |
Xbox’s current cloud-gaming page lists Game Pass Essential, Premium, and Ultimate as cloud-enabled plans. Do not assume that Game Pass Ultimate is always required: eligibility depends on the game, plan, platform, and region. Select purchased or owned games can also be streamed when Xbox marks them as cloud-playable.
What you need to play after opening the preview
Supported browser and device
Xbox promotes browser-based cloud gaming on PCs, phones, and tablets, with availability also extending to selected consoles, TVs, Fire TV devices, and other supported hardware. The preview is specifically a web experience, so its layout and controls may differ between a desktop, mobile browser, handheld, TV browser, or other device.
Edge, Chrome, and Safari are examples of supported browsers listed by Xbox. If the preview behaves unexpectedly, test one of those browsers before assuming that your account is ineligible.
Game Pass, game, and region eligibility
Seeing the dashboard does not guarantee that every game can be launched. Cloud-game availability varies by time, region, plan, device, and platform. A game may be absent from your library or display a play restriction even though the redesigned interface is working correctly.

For current plan and catalog details, check Xbox’s Game Pass comparison page and the game’s listing. Subscription prices and promotional offers are region-specific and can change. Microsoft’s US purchase page showed $9.99 per month for Essential, $14.99 for Premium, and $22.99 for Ultimate during August 2026; those figures should not be treated as worldwide or permanent prices.
Controller and touch controls
Xbox generally requires a compatible controller connected by Bluetooth or USB. Some games support Xbox touch controls, but touch availability is title-specific. The fact that the dashboard works on a phone or tablet does not mean every game can be played without a controller.
Internet connection
Xbox states a 10 Mbps minimum connection, while some devices may require 20 Mbps for better quality. Xbox recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi where available. Actual results also depend on network congestion, device performance, distance from the router, location, and the conditions between your device and Xbox’s servers.

The new web UI does not itself guarantee higher resolution, lower latency, improved bitrate, shorter queues, or better server priority. Those are separate cloud-streaming factors and can differ by plan and network conditions.

If the new interface does not appear
Use this order of checks:
- Confirm that Preview Features is enabled on the same Microsoft account you use at play.xbox.com.
- Wait the full stated period—up to 10 minutes.
- Sign out of Xbox Cloud Gaming and sign back in.
- Open play.xbox.com directly instead of waiting for a banner on the standard page.
- Try Edge, Chrome, or Safari.
- Temporarily disable aggressive privacy extensions if the site cannot retain your sign-in or preview setting.
- Use a private window only as a diagnostic. Private browsing can prevent the opt-in from being retained.
- Check whether Xbox Cloud Gaming is supported in your account’s region.
Do not rely on a VPN, browser spoofing, unofficial scripts, or changing Xbox Insider rings to force the preview. None is part of Microsoft’s official access procedure, and each can create additional account or support problems.
If the preview remains unavailable or is broken, return to xbox.com/play. Microsoft also provides feedback controls through the preview’s profile menu and the Xbox Web Guide. Look for Give Feedback when reporting a problem.
How to switch back to the existing interface
The reliable fallback is to open xbox.com/play, where the existing Xbox Cloud Gaming experience remains available. The redesigned dashboard may also show an Exit preview control, according to secondary coverage, but that label can change during testing.

“I can see the new UI, but the game is unavailable”
Check whether your Game Pass plan includes the title, whether the game supports cloud play, and whether it is available in your region and on your device. If the game is free-to-play, confirm that the title is one of the supported cloud-playable games.

“The game asks for a controller”
Connect a compatible controller over Bluetooth or USB. If you want to play with touch controls, verify that the specific game supports them; touch is not universal across the cloud catalog.
“The game starts, but streaming quality is poor”
The interface redesign is unlikely to be the cause or the cure. Try a 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection, move closer to the router, reduce other network traffic, and test a wired connection where practical. Also check whether another device is using substantial bandwidth. Xbox notes that connection, location, device, and other conditions affect cloud-gaming performance.
Is the preview worth trying?
The preview is most useful if you regularly play through a browser on a PC, phone, tablet, or handheld and want a more Xbox-like dashboard. It is also worth trying if you want to provide feedback before Microsoft expands the redesign.
Stay with the existing interface if your priority is the most predictable route to launching a game, or if a device-specific problem affects an important feature. The preview is reversible, so trying it does not commit you to abandoning the standard page.
Quick Recap
Other ways to use Xbox Cloud Gaming
- Standard browser experience: use xbox.com/play without opting into the redesign.
- Windows Xbox app: better suited to users who want an installed gaming hub, PC downloads, and broader Xbox integration rather than a browser-only interface.
- TV and streaming-device apps: convenient for sofa play, but compatibility and controller support vary by device and region.
- Steam Deck and other handhelds: Microsoft documents an Edge-based setup for Steam Deck in its support guide. Configuration and control mapping can require additional work.
- Local downloads: preferable when compatible hardware is available and you want to avoid streaming latency, connection requirements, or cloud queues.
