Hollow Knight: Silksong launched on September 4, 2025, amid reports of access trouble on Steam and Nintendo eShop, while Game Pass access was also affected. The reports coincided with a huge Steam audience, but they do not show that the game alone caused every disruption—or that Steam, Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo experienced the same kind of outage.
What happened when Silksong launched?
Team Cherry’s single-player game was released on September 4, 2025, according to its Steam listing. On launch day, GameSpot reported trouble accessing Steam and Nintendo eShop, and said Game Pass access was affected. That is contemporaneous reporting, not an official incident report from the platforms.
In practical terms, players reported difficulty reaching or using services around the launch. The available reporting does not establish that every player was unable to buy or download the game, or specify how long any problem lasted.
What the evidence says about each platform

The reports do not provide a platform-by-platform postmortem or prove that Silksong alone caused any service problem. The headline’s broad “stores” framing should not be read as evidence that all four platforms went down in the same way.

How many people played Silksong on Steam?
SteamDB’s historical concurrency chart records an all-time peak of 587,150 simultaneous Steam players on September 6, 2025. GameSpot’s September 8 report cited SteamDB counts of 534,450 on launch day, 562,814 the following day and the 587,150 peak on September 6.
These are concurrent-player counts: how many people were playing on Steam at the same time. They are not copies sold, unique players over time, download attempts, or the number of people trying to reach a storefront. GameSpot also noted that console player data was not available in the same way as Steam data, so the Steam figures cannot be compared directly with console audiences.

Why the numbers do not prove what caused the trouble
A large simultaneous player count helps show the scale of Silksong’s Steam audience, but it is not a measurement of requests sent to Steam’s store. Nor does it quantify load on Nintendo, Xbox or PlayStation services. The reported timing makes the launch relevant context, but the available sources do not isolate the game as the cause of each access issue.
Likewise, an access report is not a technical outage measurement. No source cited here gives a consistent start time, end time, affected-user count or official explanation across the four platforms. The safest conclusion is narrower: access trouble was reported around launch on Steam and Nintendo eShop, Game Pass access was also reported as affected, and the available evidence does not establish an equivalent PlayStation Store outage.
