Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →sisbkup.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with Single Instance Storage, or SIS. If sisbkup.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, identify whether Windows itself or an old backup application is calling it before replacing anything.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before running repairs, record:
- The full error message and the name of the program that displays it.
- Whether the error appears during Windows startup, backup or restore, or only when opening one old application.
- The file path shown in the message, if one is provided.
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether the calling program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether the problem began after Windows Update, antivirus cleanup, malware removal, disk trouble, or restoring an old backup.
Commonly reported wording includes “sisbkup.dll was not found,” “sisbkup.dll is missing or corrupted,” and “Error loading sisbkup.dll.” These are reported error variants, not a confirmed Microsoft error catalog. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency of sisbkup.dll is missing.

What sisbkup.dll does
Microsoft documents SIS as a legacy Windows technology that tracks links to common backing files. Backup and restore software can use that information without duplicating the same SIS data.

Microsoft’s SIS API documentation lists Windows XP as the minimum client system and Windows Server 2003 as the minimum server system. The technology was also used in historical Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, and certain Storage Server deployments.

That history matters on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Do not assume every current installation contains the file or that an old SIS build can be copied onto a newer system.
On historical 64-bit Windows installations, 64-bit system files generally belong under:
C:WindowsSystem32
32-bit system files generally belong under:
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Those directory names are confusing by design. System32 contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit files. The correct file is determined by the calling process and Windows servicing, not by guessing from the folder name.

Fix 1: Install updates and repair Windows components
This is the safest first repair when the error appears during Windows backup, restore, system servicing, or more than one program. It is also appropriate when the file was deleted, damaged, or quarantined.
Install pending Windows updates
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Open Windows Update. On some Windows 10 installations, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on it.
- Try the operation that produced the
sisbkup.dllerror.
If the error remains, run DISM and SFC in that order.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window because the percentage may pause for a while.
- Restart Windows if DISM reports that a restart is required.
DISM repairs the Windows component store and normally obtains replacement files through Windows Update. Microsoft explains the process in its System File Checker and DISM instructions. If Windows Update cannot supply the repair files, an appropriately matched Windows installation or network source may be needed, as described in Microsoft’s Windows image repair documentation.
Run SFC
After DISM completes:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart the computer.
- Test the affected program or backup operation again.
Success means SFC reports that it found no integrity violations or repaired damaged files. If it says that some files could not be repaired, do not download sisbkup.dll from a search result. Review the CBS log:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
To extract the relevant SFC entries to your desktop, run:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
If DISM and SFC cannot restore the component, consider System Restore or an in-place Windows repair using official installation media. Back up important files first.
Running DISM and SFC repeatedly without knowing which component changed can make troubleshooting slow and confusing. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what needs attention, while its repair functions require the full version; it is optional, and Windows servicing remains the correct repair path for a damaged system component.
Fix 2: Repair the old backup or restore application
If Windows works normally and the message appears only when launching one old backup, restore, imaging, or storage-management program, the application is probably the immediate caller.
- Write down the program name and version shown in the error or shortcut.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps. On Windows 10, open Apps & features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair, then test the program.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not work, choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the program from its original vendor installer or trusted installation media.
- Apply the program’s own updates before testing it again.
Some older programs have a Change, Repair, or Modify option in Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Use that option when available instead of immediately removing the application.

Do not assume that installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET will restore sisbkup.dll. Microsoft’s documentation ties this DLL to the SIS backup API, not to those general-purpose runtime packages.
If the program predates the Windows version now installed, check whether the vendor supports it. An old application may be calling an obsolete interface even when Windows passes SFC and DISM checks. In that case, reinstalling the application may not be enough; a supported replacement or a compatible older Windows environment may be required.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and file authenticity
Security software can quarantine a legitimate system file, but a file with the name sisbkup.dll is not automatically genuine.
- Open your antivirus or Windows Security application.
- Open Protection history, Quarantine, or Detection history.
- Search for
sisbkup.dll. - Note the detected path and the reason for removal.
- Do not restore the file immediately.
- Run a full malware scan.
- If the file is identified as a Windows component, confirm that its path belongs to the affected Windows installation.
- Check the file’s Properties > Digital Signatures tab when a copy is present.
- Use DISM and SFC to restore the component rather than copying the quarantined file manually.
If the detected copy is inside an unfamiliar application folder, a temporary directory, or a newly created program directory, treat it as suspicious. Remove the untrusted program and scan the system.
Fix 4: Check architecture and the calling program
A 32-bit program can fail because it is looking for a 32-bit dependency, even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Conversely, a 64-bit process cannot use a 32-bit replacement simply because the filenames match.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then About.
- Read System type.
To check the application, look at its vendor documentation or installation folder. A 32-bit program is often installed under C:Program Files (x86), but that folder alone is not proof.
Do not copy a historical Vista, Windows 7, Server, x86, or x64 version into System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder. Microsoft support records show separate SIS builds for different operating systems and architectures. Those historical files are not universal downloads.
Fix 5: Check storage errors and recent system changes
A failing drive or damaged file system can remove or corrupt protected Windows files.
First, back up important documents. Then:
- Open Start and search for Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > System.
- Look for disk, NTFS, storage, or controller errors around the time the problem began.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
chkdsk /f C:
- If Windows says the volume is in use, type
Yto schedule the check. - Restart the computer and allow the disk check to complete.
If errors continue, check the drive manufacturer’s health diagnostics and repair Windows after protecting your data.
A System Restore rollback is reasonable only when a restore point clearly predates the failure. Open Start, search for Create a restore point, select System Restore, choose a suitable restore point, and review the affected programs before confirming. System Restore is not a substitute for replacing a DLL manually.

A driver update does not normally restore sisbkup.dll, but storage-controller or disk-related errors can make Windows components appear damaged.

Use Windows Update first. If a specific device is implicated:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Storage controllers, Disk drives, or IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Do not uninstall a storage controller driver unless you have a recovery plan and know the device is the cause.
Finding the correct driver can mean checking hardware IDs, Windows compatibility, and several vendor releases. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention, while driver installation through the full version is optional; it will not replace the need to repair or reinstall the application that is actually calling sisbkup.dll.
Why regsvr32 is usually the wrong repair
Do not run:
regsvr32 sisbkup.dll
as a routine fix. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents sisbkup.dll as an API DLL for SIS backup functionality, not as a self-registering COM server.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The command may produce an entry-point error, and even a successful registration would not repair a missing, corrupt, incorrectly built, or incompatible Windows component. Use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC instead.
Never download a loose DLL from a random site
A replacement from a DLL download website can be:
- The wrong Windows build.
- The wrong architecture.
- Unsigned or modified.
- Malware using a familiar filename.
- Missing dependencies.
- Unable to repair the underlying component-store problem.
Microsoft does not provide a simple modern standalone installer for arbitrary sisbkup.dll errors. Use Windows servicing, official Windows installation media, or the original application’s official installer. Manual replacement belongs only to an advanced recovery procedure using a verified file from the same Windows build or an official source, and only after SFC identifies a file it could not repair.
When to escalate
Collect this information if the error persists:
- The complete error text.
- The application name and installation path.
- Windows edition, version, build, and system type.
- The exact path of any
sisbkup.dllcopy. - Digital-signature information.
- Antivirus quarantine details.
- Relevant Event Viewer entries.
- The SFC result and
sfcdetails.txt. - Evidence of disk or file-system errors.
This separates a damaged Windows installation from an obsolete application dependency, a missing dependency of sisbkup.dll, a quarantined file, or a suspicious replacement.
FAQ
Is sisbkup.dll legitimate?
Yes. Microsoft documents Sisbkup.dll as part of the legacy Single Instance Storage backup API. Its presence or absence on a current Windows installation should not be assumed without checking the affected build and operation.
Is sisbkup.dll a normal third-party application file?
It is a Microsoft Windows component used by backup and restore software. An old application may still report it as its own missing dependency, which is why the application name and file path matter.
Should I copy sisbkup.dll into System32?
No. Copying an arbitrary file can create an architecture, version, signature, or dependency mismatch. Repair Windows through DISM and SFC, or repair the original application.
Does regsvr32 fix sisbkup.dll?
Generally, no. SIS backup functionality is not documented as a self-registering COM DLL, so regsvr32 is not the appropriate repair.
Why does “specified module could not be found” mention sisbkup.dll when the file exists?
The missing item may be a dependency loaded by sisbkup.dll. Check the application, Windows component health, architecture, and Event Viewer rather than replacing the visible filename alone.

What if SFC and DISM both report no problems?
Repair or reinstall the old backup application, verify its Windows compatibility, and check whether antivirus removed an application dependency. If only that program fails, the application is more likely to be the repair target than Windows.
