Resting also revives most defeated enemies, while the golden light from some sites offers a general hint toward important destinations—not a mandatory route.
What does a Site of Grace do?
Approach a Site of Grace and use your platform’s interact button to activate it. Interact again to rest and open its menu. Bandai Namco Europe’s 2022 ELDEN RING Starter Guide says resting restores HP and FP, heals status ailments, and refills Sacred Flasks.
The menu also provides character-management and preparation options. Depending on your progress, you can pass time, spend runes to level up, adjust flask charges and potency, memorize spells, mix the Wondrous Physick, or sort items in your chest. Available options change as the story progresses.
Resting revives most defeated enemies
Resting comes with a world-state trade-off: most enemies you have defeated will return. Use a Site of Grace when recovery or menu access is worth resetting nearby foes; activating a site and choosing to rest are distinct actions.

What does the golden Guidance of Grace mean?
Some Sites of Grace send out a golden trail. Bandai Namco Entertainment America describes the trail as pointing “in a general direction”; key destinations are often legacy dungeons, main bosses, or important areas. Treat it as a lead toward progress, not an instruction to follow one required route. Elden Ring also offers optional places to explore.
After you find an area’s map fragment, the guidance can also appear on the map. It is separate from map markers and beacons, which you place yourself as navigation aids. The publisher explains the guidance and these map tools in its 2023 gameplay overview.

How do you travel to a Site of Grace?
Discovered Sites of Grace are recorded on your map and can be selected as travel destinations. This is not available in every situation: Bandai Namco Europe’s Starter Guide notes that travel is unavailable in some dungeons, and the map cannot be opened during battle. The guide does not enumerate every dungeon or restriction.
- Open the map when you are not in battle.
- Select a discovered Site of Grace as your destination.
- If travel is unavailable, leave the restricted situation or dungeon and try again.
Where do you respawn if you die?
Your default return point is the last Site of Grace at which you rested—not simply one you discovered or activated. If a Stake of Marika is nearby, you may be offered the choice to revive there instead. This is a local alternative, unlike the last-rested Site of Grace, which serves as your default checkpoint. An on-screen status icon indicates when you are within a stake’s coverage.

Why are churches useful to visit?
Churches are worthwhile exploration stops: Bandai Namco Entertainment America says they always contain a Site of Grace and are the primary source of Sacred Tears. Sacred Tears improve flask effectiveness, making churches a practical place to check while exploring. The detail appears in the publisher’s gameplay overview.
