Valve’s Source implementation loads sixense.dll and the companion sixense_utils.dll when Sixense input support is enabled. The exact programs that use the file vary, but the important point is ownership: the calling game or application should provide its own matching copy.

First, identify the program that needs sixense.dll
Read the complete error window before closing it. Note the game, launcher, emulator, SDK application, or executable named in the message.

If the error appears immediately after launching a shortcut:
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Check the Target field.
- Identify the executable and its installation folder.
- Repair that product rather than Windows.
If the error appears through Steam, identify the game shown in the Steam library. If it appears in a custom mod, identify the base game and the mod that enabled Sixense support.
Fix 1: Verify the game files in Steam
This is the safest first repair for a Steam game because it restores files from the game’s own installation source.

- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Restart Steam.
- Launch the game again.
A successful repair usually means the game starts without the sixense.dll message. Steam may download the missing library or replace a damaged copy.
If verification reports that files were repaired but the same error returns:
- Close the game and Steam.
- Restart Windows.
- Run verification again.
- Check whether the game has a separate launcher or prerequisite installer.
- Run those prerequisite installers from the game’s installation directory if they are present.
- Verify the files once more.
Some older games also depend on local mod files or the companion sixense_utils.dll. Verification may repair the original game but not a separately installed mod. Temporarily disable the mod and test the unmodified game.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall a non-Steam game or SDK
For a non-Steam title, use the original installer supplied with the application.

- Locate the original setup program.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Repair, if offered.
- Allow the installer to replace missing files.
- Restart the computer.
- Test the application.
Reinstall the owning program
If repair is unavailable:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find the affected game, SDK, or controller software.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall from the original installer or the product’s official distribution channel.
- Launch the program before adding mods or custom controller files.
Reinstalling the application that owns sixense.dll is the definitive fix when the installation is incomplete or its files do not match.

Do not install a generic “DLL pack.” A standalone file may belong to a different build, may be the wrong architecture, or may be unsafe. It also will not restore companion files, configuration, runtime libraries, or the application’s expected folder structure.
Fix 3: Install the Visual C++ 2010 SP1 x86 runtime
A particularly confusing case occurs when sixense.dll is visibly present but Windows reports:
The specified module could not be found.
That message can mean Windows found sixense.dll but could not load one of its dependencies. The commonly catalogued 32-bit Sixense build imports Microsoft Visual C++ components including MSVCR100.dll and MSVCP100.dll.

Install x86 even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
- Open the official Microsoft Download Center page for the Visual C++ 2010 SP1 redistributable.
- Download
vcredist_x86.exe. - Right-click the downloaded installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Repair if the runtime is already installed, or complete the installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the affected game or SDK again.
Success means the application passes the DLL-loading stage. If the error remains, the missing dependency may be another application file, the companion sixense_utils.dll, or a mismatched build rather than Visual C++.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 64-bit version of Windows can run 32-bit games and applications. It does not require every DLL used by those applications to be 64-bit.
The usual Sixense sixense.dll is a 32-bit library. A 32-bit executable needs the 32-bit DLL beside the executable or in the application’s expected runtime path.
Sixense SDK packages can also contain differently named 64-bit files, including names such as sixense_x64.dll. Do not rename that file to sixense.dll, and do not place a 64-bit library in a 32-bit game folder.

To check the application architecture:
- Start the affected program if possible.
- Open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click the column headings.
- Choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform, where available.
- Check whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
You can also inspect the SDK or game documentation and installation folders. Use the exact filename and architecture expected by the executable.
If a mod replaced the original files, remove the mod’s DLLs and reinstall the base game files. A file can have the right name but still be the wrong build.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Antivirus software may remove or quarantine an old game library. The filename alone does not prove that a file is malicious, but it also does not make an unknown replacement safe.

- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an action involving the affected game or
sixense.dll. - If the file came from the trusted original installation, follow the security product’s restore option.
- Run Steam file verification or the application installer repair immediately afterward.
- Launch the program again.
Restore only a file belonging to a trusted, original installation. Do not disable antivirus protection merely to download a DLL from an unknown source. If the file was replaced manually, remove it and reinstall the owning program.
Fix 6: Update a related controller or device driver
The Sixense library is application middleware, not a Windows hardware driver. Updating a driver will not normally recreate a missing sixense.dll, but it can help when an old controller integration fails after the library has been restored.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Human Interface Devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers, and Sound, video and game controllers.
- Locate the related controller.
- Right-click it.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the game or SDK.
If Device Manager reports that the best driver is already installed, check the controller manufacturer’s official support channel for a compatible driver. Do not replace the application DLL with a driver package.
Manually hunting through old hardware drivers can mean guessing which of several similarly named packages matches the device. Reinstalling the game or SDK remains the definitive fix for a missing sixense.dll.
Fix 7: Use Windows repair commands only for wider corruption
sixense.dll is not a protected Windows system file, so System File Checker normally will not restore it. Use these commands when other Windows components are also failing, installers are damaged, or the problem affects multiple unrelated programs.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original application again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows resources. Neither command is a substitute for reinstalling the game or SDK that supplied sixense.dll.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time when the actual issue is a damaged game folder or missing VC++ runtime. Do not copy sixense.dll to System32 or SysWOW64
Windows normally searches the application directory when loading an ordinary private DLL. Copying sixense.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can create version conflicts and does not repair the game’s local files.

Keep the matching library beside the program that expects it. Microsoft documents application-local DLL deployment as a way to prevent unrelated programs from overwriting private copies.
Do not rename an x64 file
A file named sixense_x64.dll is not interchangeable with sixense.dll. Renaming it does not convert its architecture or make it compatible with a 32-bit executable.
Do not use regsvr32 as a universal DLL fix
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A normal game runtime library is loaded through its exported functions and is not installed by registration.
Running this command against sixense.dll is therefore usually pointless:
regsvr32 sixense.dll
It may produce an entry-point error and does not restore dependencies or tell the game where its files belong.
Do not expect Windows Features to provide Sixense
Turning Windows optional features on or off will not install a third-party Sixense library. Avoid enabling random legacy components as a substitute for repairing the affected application.
If sixense.dll still will not load
If the file is restored but the error persists, check these items in order:

- Confirm that the game is launching the installation you repaired, not an old shortcut pointing elsewhere.
- Verify that the executable and DLL have matching architecture.
- Confirm that
sixense_utils.dllis present when the application expects it. - Repair the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 SP1 x86 runtime.
- Remove or update incompatible mods.
- Check antivirus history again.
- Verify whether the current game release still supports Sixense hardware or its optional input path.
- Run a full security scan if an unknown DLL was previously copied into the folder.
- Reinstall the complete game or SDK from its original source.
System Restore may help after a known system-wide change, but it cannot recreate an obsolete vendor SDK if no restore point contains that software.
