Skate Story makes skateboarding the way through, the way forward, and even the way to fight in a surreal underworld. Its carefully paced trick combos, striking audiovisual style, and strange journey give it a distinct identity; limited opportunities to revisit earlier spots and a few demanding high-speed sections may frustrate players who want a more open or forgiving ride.
What is Skate Story?
Skate Story is a single-player skateboarding adventure developed by Sam Eng and published by Devolver Digital. You play a glass-bodied demon who accepts the Devil’s bargain: skate through the Underworld and swallow the Moon to earn freedom. The journey spans nine layers, with surreal street spots, characters, skate trials, and more than 70 tricks, according to sole developer Sam Eng’s March 19, 2025 PlayStation.Blog post.
This is not a realistic skateboarding simulator. Skating is the game’s primary language for moving through its environments, building combos, and taking on enemies. It is also a single-player game, not a multiplayer skating space.
How does the skating and combat work?
The central challenge is to build a satisfying line rather than simply enter the most tricks possible. Eng’s descriptions emphasize variety, style, speed, airtime, and clearing objects or gaps: those elements raise combo value, while repeating tricks or skating slowly contributes less. When you finish a line, the accumulated tricks are released as damage against the Moon or other enemies. The developer outlines this combo-and-combat design in the March 2025 announcement and the October 2025 launch post.

PC Gamer reviewer Lincoln Carpenter describes the PC version’s trick inputs as combinations primed before the skater pops into the air. In his account, a clean line depends on managing speed and orientation while building the combo; pausing lets the combo fade gradually, while landing another trick can keep it going. That makes timing and momentum more important than frantically stacking inputs midair. Boss sequences also tie skating to the soundtrack: players need to keep moving and vary their lines as they face an enemy, according to Eng’s launch post.
What stands out about the atmosphere?
The Underworld is a surreal cityscape rather than a conventional skate park: waxed ledges and street spots sit alongside strange characters, dreamlike settings, and bureaucratic absurdity. Carpenter praised the PC version’s visuals, skating feel, and music, and characterized its tone as a mix of infernal imagery, cosmic portent, and surreal irony. He also found some narration eccentric and occasionally unclear; those are his critical impressions, not an objective description every player will share.

The soundtrack is part of the game’s identity. Eng describes a 12-track original score by Blood Cultures, with additional tracks by John Fio, in the March 2025 PlayStation.Blog post. On PS5, Eng says DualSense light effects respond to the glass body and the surrounding light in the October 2025 launch post.
Where can Skate Story become frustrating?
Revisiting earlier spots
Carpenter reports that earlier skate spots cannot be revisited without starting a new game. Because that observation comes from a December 2025 PC review and may not reflect later updates, treat it as a caveat to check against the current version before buying if replaying individual locations matters to you.

Fast, demanding sections
The same review notes brief difficulty spikes in linear stretches that require sharp turns or obstacle avoidance at speed. Carpenter describes these as occasional hiccups rather than the defining experience, but they may test players who prefer a relaxed, forgiving flow.
Is Skate Story worth playing?
It is a strong fit if you want a focused single-player adventure where trick-combo timing is woven into traversal and combat, and if a strange, soundtrack-led world appeals more than a realistic skating sandbox. The skating’s momentum, feedback, and visual style were among Carpenter’s chief praises of the reviewed PC version. It is a less obvious fit if you expect multiplayer, broad freedom to revisit locations, or consistently gentle sections.

Before choosing a version, consider the storefront and platform you use, whether you prefer a sequence of designed set pieces to open-ended roaming, and how much you enjoy managing speed and combos. Those preferences are more useful guides than treating the game as a conventional skateboarding simulator.
