Skull and Bones’ ship combat and world are its clearest draws; the cited Screen Rant review argues that repetitive tasks and tedious travel weigh them down.

Skull and Bones is most appealing if you want a game built around commanding a ship and fighting other vessels at sea. The central criticism in Leo Faierman’s Screen Rant review is that its naval action and attractive world are weighed down by repetitive tasks, limited simulation, and tedious travel. Gamepressure indexes Faierman’s review at 4/10, dated February 23, 2024, and attributes the headline “This Boat Is Visibly Sinking” to it. That is one reviewer’s verdict, not a consensus score.

What is Skull and Bones?

Released on February 16, 2024, Skull and Bones is a pirate action game developed by Ubisoft Singapore and published by Ubisoft. It is set in the Indian Ocean during the golden age of piracy. You command a ship, fight at sea, build reputation, collect loot, and equip ship parts that affect combat or appearance. Gamepressure lists versions for PC Windows, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

That focus matters: the question is not simply whether it delivers a broad pirate adventure. The game’s defining activity is ship-based combat, while the review excerpts make quest repetition, traversal, and limited simulation important counterpoints.

What does the “This Boat Is Visibly Sinking” review criticize?

Gamepressure’s database attributes the Screen Rant review to Leo Faierman, gives it a score of 4/10, and dates it February 23, 2024. The accessible source is a secondary database reproducing review information and excerpts, not Screen Rant’s original page, so the score and specific criticisms should be understood as Gamepressure’s indexed account of Faierman’s review.

#1 Best Overall
Skull and Bones - Standard Edition, PlayStation 5
  • Engage in thrilling naval battles and equip a multitude of powerful weapons as you risk it all for the biggest loot.
  • Sail the lawless seas solo, or team up with two friends or other players to partake in shareable contracts and rewards.
  • Face cutthroat pirate hunters, deadly sea monsters, unpredictable weather, dangerous rogue waves, supernatural threats, and more as you explore a vast open world.
  • Craft and sail up to 10 different ships at launch, each with unique perks to match your own personal playstyle.
  • Grow your infamy and unlock resources and opportunities to get riskier contracts and upgrade your equipment.

In that account, the main complaints are that simulation systems feel limited, questing becomes tedious, and the selection of main ship models is small. The excerpt also recognizes a counterpoint: later customization can make experimenting with armaments interesting. Taken together, the criticism is less that there is nothing to tune or enjoy than that the surrounding activities and available variety may not sustain the experience.

Is Skull and Bones any good?

The cited criticism points to a clear trade-off. Ship-to-ship combat and the game’s world are identified as strengths; busywork and travel are recurring weaknesses. If your priority is engaging naval battles, that balance may still leave something to enjoy. If you expect varied quests, extensive freedom beyond your ship, or a richly simulated pirate life, the cited review suggests a less satisfying fit.

Other reviews reproduced by Gamepressure show that opinion is not uniform. Its database presents Eurogamer’s review as two out of five, with Matt Wales credited, and Game Rant’s as 2.5/5, with Adrian Morales credited; both are negative assessments that emphasize tedious or redundant play. In contrast, the same page lists Hardcore Gamer at 4/5, with Thomas Kent credited, and reproduces a positive recommendation for action-adventure fans. These are individual review ratings and excerpts, not a measurement of all players or critics.

Gamepressure reproduces this sentence attributed to Eurogamer reviewer Matt Wales: “Ubisoft’s long-in-the-works pirate adventure boasts a beautiful world and bombastic ship-to-ship combat, but it sinks amid boring busywork and tedious traversal.” Because the accessible wording comes through a secondary database rather than the original Eurogamer review, it is best treated as an attributed excerpt.

  • Grow your infamy to gain access to more resources and opportunities as you take on riskier contracts to gain the most loot.
  • Craft up to 12 ships and customize them with a variety of weapons and armor to maximize your chances for success.
  • Be wary in this untamed open world inspired by the Indian Ocean. There are predators lurking around every corner.
  • Choose how you want to take on the seas. Sail solo or team up with two friends to watch your back in either PvE or PvEvP.

What do you do in Skull and Bones?

You command a ship through a pirate setting, fight other ships, pursue quests, gather loot, build reputation, and fit ship parts for combat or appearance. Those activities put the game’s appeal and its main risk in the same loop: time spent improving a vessel can make loadout decisions more engaging, but repeated tasks and travel may feel like friction if you want more variety between battles.

Who should play it?

  • Consider it if: you want a naval combat game, enjoy outfitting a ship, and are willing to accept routine objectives and travel as part of the loop.
  • Be cautious if: you want a broad pirate adventure with varied questing, substantial simulation, or extensive activity away from your ship. The cited criticism focuses on those limits.
  • Use the score in context: Faierman’s indexed 4/10 is a strongly negative individual review, while the review range reproduced by Gamepressure includes a positive 4/5 as well.

As listed by Gamepressure, the game is available for PC Windows, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. The database listing establishes platforms and release date, but does not establish current store availability, physical-copy stock, update status, or live-service conditions.
