The word has no single universal list: its meaning depends on the game, the task, and whether you are talking about the player or the game’s mechanics.
What does “skill” mean in a video game?
A useful general definition is an ability or capacity used to carry out a process, apply knowledge, complete a task, or solve a problem. In a game, that ability might belong to the player, a playable character, or both. Keeping those meanings separate makes discussions of skill clearer.
Player skills
Player skills are abilities used to play: for example, interpreting a situation, choosing an action, communicating with teammates, or executing an input at the right moment. Which abilities matter—and how much—depends on the game and the task.
Character and system skills
A character skill is an action or capability provided by the game, such as a special move. It is not the same as the player’s ability to use it effectively. A player may know when and how to use a character skill; the game supplies the capability, while the player supplies the judgment and execution.

Why there is no universal list of gaming skills
Skills frameworks are built for particular purposes and settings, rather than as a definitive inventory of every human ability. The European Commission Joint Research Centre describes skills broadly across physical, cognitive, and non-cognitive domains, and distinguishes them from competence: a broader combination of knowledge, skills, social or methodological abilities, and values. Its definition draws on the 2018 Council Recommendation on Key Competences for Lifelong Learning: skills are the ability and capacity to carry out processes and use knowledge to achieve results. European Commission Joint Research Centre: Skills and competences.
That distinction helps explain why one all-purpose list of “video-game skills” would be misleading. A framework for a qualification, a labour-market classification, and a game’s own ability system organize skills for different reasons. None should be treated as a universal gaming taxonomy.

Player skills can be task-specific or transferable
The UK Standard Skills Classification separates occupational skills from more generic core skills. The same broad distinction is useful when describing play: some abilities are closely tied to a particular game or task, while others may apply across different activities. This is an analogy, not a classification of video-game skills.
Game- or task-specific abilities
These are abilities whose value depends heavily on the game’s rules and demands. To describe one precisely, name the task and the behavior involved rather than relying on a vague label such as “good at games.”

More transferable abilities
Frameworks use different labels and groupings for transferable skills. England’s framework, for example, includes analysing, communicating, creativity, critical thinking, decision making, evaluating, investigating, leading, observing, physical dexterity, planning, recording, and self-managing; it describes these lists as indicative, not exhaustive. The UK Standard Skills Classification names 13 core skills, including working with others, listening, speaking, adapting, problem solving and decision making, digital literacy, reading, and writing. These are examples from education and employment contexts, not an official ranking of what every game tests. Department for Education: Transferable skills framework · Skills England: UK Standard Skills Classification.
How to identify a skill in a game
- Name the context. Specify the game, activity, or situation. A skill label without context can mean different things to different players.
- Describe the action. Say what the player actually does, such as noticing a change, choosing between options, coordinating with others, or executing an input.
- Separate knowledge from ability. Knowing a rule is not identical to applying it successfully. A broader competence may combine knowledge, skills, and attitudes.
- Look for evidence in activity. Skills are demonstrated through what someone does in context, not just through a label or a claim about themselves.
What current employability frameworks say—and what they do not
Skills England published its Employability Skills Framework on 5 October 2026. It offers a shared language for employability in the UK skills and employment system, including practical examples involving projects, self-directed learning, feedback, and workplace tasks. Its “Learning and investigating” section gives this example for young people: “I can use AI tools to find information and help me learn, but I check sources and build my own understanding.” That is an employability example, not a claim that a particular game develops or measures the ability. Skills England: Employability Skills Framework.

For a game-specific account, use the game’s own rules and the task being discussed to identify the relevant abilities. Broader education or employment frameworks can help supply vocabulary, but their categories should not be presented as a definitive list of gaming skills.
