Quite a bit—but not enough to settle every theory. Bandai Namco’s official description gives a few concrete story points, then leaves the connections between them open. The useful way to read it is to separate what the publisher says from what the images invite us to guess.
What the trailer explicitly says about Miquella
Bandai Namco’s official gameplay reveal trailer description says Miquella departed for the Land of Shadow. It adds that he did so after “Divesting himself of his flesh, his strength, his lineage. Of all things Golden.” The wording establishes a deliberate separation from those named aspects of himself; it does not explain precisely what each means or why he gave them up. Read the official expansion description and the February 21, 2024 gameplay reveal trailer listing.
The description also says: “In the Land of Shadow, Miquella awaits the return of his promised Lord.” That identifies an expectation, not the Lord’s identity or the full purpose of Miquella’s journey. The sentence alone does not explain what the promised Lord is expected to do, or how that figure relates to the rest of Miquella’s actions.
What the official description says about the Land of Shadow
Bandai Namco describes the Land of Shadow as a place obscured by the Erdtree and says it is where Marika first set foot. The same promotional text says the land was purged in an unsung battle and set ablaze by Messmer’s flame. These are the clearest anchors the trailer’s description provides: a connection to Marika, a violent past, and Messmer’s fire.
#1 Best Overall
The official wording does not spell out the land’s exact cosmological relationship to the Lands Between. Nor does the phrase “where Marika first set foot” explain what happened there or how it fits into the larger history. Those gaps matter: the description supplies setting and events without turning them into a complete account.
What the trailer’s framing does—and doesn’t—promise
Bandai Namco Europe framed the story trailer as revealing the history of the Realm of Shadow. That is a promotional description of the trailer, not a promise that it answers every question about the setting or Miquella. Bandai Namco Europe’s story-trailer announcement is useful context, but it does not replace the limits of the trailer’s actual text.
Images can support interpretations, and familiar names invite connections to Elden Ring’s existing mythology. But a visual suggestion is not the same as an explicit explanation. The official promotional copy does not establish a definitive reading for every shot, a single motive behind all of Miquella’s actions, or a complete account of the promised Lord’s role. Treat those connections as hypotheses unless the game itself supplies the missing evidence.
What is confirmed, and what remains open
| Officially stated | Not settled by the promotional text |
|---|---|
| Miquella departed for the Land of Shadow and divested himself of his flesh, strength, lineage, and “all things Golden.” | Exactly what each act of divestment means, or one motive that explains all of them. |
| The Land of Shadow is obscured by the Erdtree and associated with Marika’s first steps. | The land’s precise cosmological relationship to the Lands Between. |
| The land was purged in an unsung battle and set ablaze by Messmer’s flame. | A full account of the battle or a definitive interpretation of every related trailer image. |
| Miquella awaits the return of his promised Lord. | The Lord’s identity and complete role, based on that sentence alone. |
Release context: this is an expansion, not a standalone game
Shadow of the Erdtree is downloadable content for Elden Ring, and Bandai Namco’s official page says the base game is required. The expansion launched globally on June 21, 2024; that date is historical context, not a statement about current price or availability. Bandai Namco’s release announcement gives the launch date, while Bandai Namco Europe’s expansion page describes its additional weapons, equipment, skills, magic, enemies, bosses, and plotlines.
