Bethesda has not shut down Skyblivion: the fan project’s developers said the publisher had no interest in ending it, gave the team game keys, and remained supportive after The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered launched. Skyblivion is still a separate remake mod for Skyrim Special Edition, with a team-announced target of 2026 and no public quarter or confirmed release date.
What Bethesda’s reported support means for Skyblivion
In an April 2025 public statement, the Skyblivion team said Bethesda had “absolutely no interest in shutting down Skyblivion” and had provided game keys to its developers. The team framed the official remaster as another way for players to experience Cyrodiil. Its FAQ later said Bethesda remained supportive after the remaster’s release and that the official game’s community response could help inform the fan project. These are the team’s accounts of Bethesda’s position; they do not establish that Bethesda owns, funds, or formally approves every aspect of Skyblivion. Skyblivion FAQ
Is Skyblivion still coming out?
The team’s current published target is 2026. Its FAQ does not specify a quarter, so 2026 is a target window, not a dated or guaranteed release. The latest dated official project update identified here is a March 16, 2026 Mages Guild quest showcase, not a release announcement. Skyblivion project homepage Skyblivion press page
Why the team moved the target
On December 3, 2025, the team shifted its anticipated release from 2025 into 2026, saying it wanted more time for a polished, stable, complete experience. Work it identified as remaining included Imperial City assets and interiors, navmesh across locations, quest implementation and debugging, and further polish, balance, and bug fixing. That announcement also said the world map was complete, all quest dungeons had been remade, and core 3D assets were essentially finished at that point. Those are the team’s dated progress claims, not an independent audit or a guarantee that the remaining work will finish by a particular date.
How Skyblivion differs from Oblivion Remastered
They are separate projects with different approaches. Bethesda Game Studios described its official release as a remaster rather than a remake: it updates art, animation, effects, some voice recordings and game systems while preserving the original game’s core. Bethesda’s remaster announcement
Skyblivion is a volunteer-made fan remake from the TESRenewal modding group, rebuilding Oblivion within Skyrim Special Edition. The FAQ describes redesigned dungeons, Oblivion realms and exterior worldspace. It says the initial release is intended to include the base Oblivion content, with work on Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles planned after release. Bethesda’s official remaster product page lists those expansions among its included content. Skyblivion FAQ Oblivion Remastered product page
The Skyblivion FAQ says the team does not plan to use newer voice lines or assets from the remaster because of legal restraints, and that porting its project to the remaster would require a major scope change—effectively starting over. These are the project’s explanations, not a statement of Bethesda’s legal position.

No. Bethesda announced a limited Physical Deluxe Edition for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X on October 13, 2025. Bethesda said its disc grants access to the base game but requires an additional download, with sales through select regional stores. That edition is a product option for the official remaster; it is not a Skyblivion requirement. Bethesda’s physical edition announcement
