Skyblivion is no longer targeting a 2025 release. The fan remake’s official target is now 2026, with no quarter or exact date announced in its FAQ. Its planned first release covers Oblivion’s base-game content, but two notable mechanics—spellcrafting and underwater combat—are not planned for launch.

When does Skyblivion come out?

The official release target is 2026. Skyblivion’s FAQ does not give a quarter or a specific date, so there is no more precise public schedule to rely on. The team announced the move from 2025 to 2026 on December 3, 2025, saying it wanted time to deliver a polished and stable release. (Skyblivion FAQ; December 3, 2025 delay announcement)

In that announcement, the team said remaining work included Imperial City assets and interiors, navmesh work, final quest implementation and debugging, plus polish, balance, and bug fixing. It also reported that the world map and quest dungeons were complete at the time. Those are progress statements from the developers, not an independent confirmation of completion. A March 16, 2026 update previewed three remade Mages Guild quests, showing that updates continued after the delay but not establishing a new date or that the full project is finished. What is Skyblivion?

Skyblivion is a free, volunteer-built fan remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion by the TESRenewal group. It is being developed as a mod for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition, not as a standalone commercial game. The project’s aim is to recreate Cyrodiil and adapt Oblivion’s quests, locations, characters, and systems within Skyrim Special Edition. (Official FAQ; official press materials)

The team describes plans for a remade mainland Cyrodiil, redesigned dungeons and Oblivion realms, an expanded exterior worldspace, recreated weapons and armor, updated visuals, new soundtrack material, and adapted systems such as classes, attributes, lockpicking, perks, and NPC disposition. These describe the project’s intended scope; they are not independent assessments of the finished game.

What content is in the initial release—and what is deferred?

The planned launch scope is Oblivion’s base-game world, systems, and quests, rather than its expansions. Skyblivion says work on later releases, including Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles, is intended after the initial release. The project’s press materials list more than 223 quests as a feature count; that figure is the team’s own claim, not an independently audited total. (Official FAQ; official press materials)

Mechanics not planned for launch

  • Spellcrafting: The FAQ says it is not planned for the initial release. The team says it existed in an earlier Skyrim Legendary Edition iteration but could not be ported to Special Edition because the source code was unavailable to them.
  • Underwater combat: Also not planned for launch. The team says implementing it would require NPC behavior work for which it lacks developers.

The FAQ leaves open the possibility that either feature could arrive in a later update or future DLC, but neither is confirmed to return. (Official FAQ)

What do you need to play Skyblivion?

The FAQ says players must own both Skyrim Special Edition and Oblivion GOTY Deluxe. It accepts copies from Steam and GOG, and says the two games can be owned on different storefronts. Skyrim Anniversary DLC is not required. Skyblivion itself and its planned expansions are described as free. (Official FAQ)

Supported platforms and installation

  • Targeted: The latest Skyrim Special Edition on Steam and GOG.
  • Not supported: Consoles. The FAQ also says Skyrim VR has no official support.
  • Unlikely to be supported: Microsoft Store/Game Pass and Epic versions of Skyrim.

The team describes a custom installer that will download and move the required files. It has no current plan to release the mod itself through Steam. The FAQ says further support details may be confirmed closer to launch, so check the official information for changes. A controller is optional: gameplay and interface controller support is planned, but it is not a prerequisite. (Official FAQ)

Are system requirements and language support confirmed?

No final hardware requirements have been published in the FAQ. The team offers only a broad expectation that a PC able to run Skyrim Special Edition on high settings should have no issue; that is not a specific CPU, graphics card, memory, or storage recommendation. (Official FAQ)

The FAQ lists English as the currently supported language. Community translations may be possible, though some assets would need manual localization. The mod can be modded, but the team does not guarantee that existing Skyrim mods will work with it. Compatibility should therefore be treated as unconfirmed rather than assumed.

Should you wait for Skyblivion or play another version of Oblivion?

That depends on whether you want to play now or specifically want the fan remake’s planned take on Cyrodiil. Skyblivion has a 2026 target but no exact date, and it requires ownership of both specified PC games. For a decision between Skyblivion, the original Oblivion, and Bethesda’s Oblivion Remastered, compare their current availability, platforms, requirements, and content using the relevant official product information: this article’s source material establishes Skyblivion’s own plans and requirements, not a complete current comparison of the other releases.
