skydrivetelemetry.dll may produce messages such as:

  • “The program can’t start because SkyDriveTelemetry.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “SkyDriveTelemetry.dll was not found.”
  • “The specified module could not be found.”
  • “SkyDriveTelemetry.dll could not be loaded.”
  • “SkyDriveTelemetry.dll is not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

The 60-second answer

skydrivetelemetry.dll is a legitimate Microsoft file associated with the built-in SkyDrive/OneDrive client from the Windows 8.1 era. Microsoft lists Skydrivetelemetry.dll with other Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 files, including Skydrive.exe and Skydriveshell.dll.Microsoft’s Windows 8.1 update documentation

Do not download a replacement DLL from a random DLL website. On Windows 10 or Windows 11, the message often means an old OneDrive component, damaged Windows files, a removed legacy application, or a dependency problem is still being requested. Repair Windows first, then repair the program or compatibility component that calls the file.

Restart Windows when both commands finish. If the error remains, continue with the diagnostic steps below.

What SkyDriveTelemetry.dll belongs to

Microsoft renamed SkyDrive to OneDrive, but older Windows components retain the SkyDrive name. The OneDrive desktop app was built into Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1, which explains why this filename can appear as part of the operating system rather than as a file belonging to a modern standalone application.Microsoft’s earlier-Windows OneDrive guidance

The strongest Microsoft evidence places the file in Windows 8.1-era servicing packages and Windows Server 2012 R2. The cited Microsoft file table identifies it as an x86, or 32-bit, Windows file. A public listing also reports version 6.3.9600.17055 and a size of about 0.56 MB, but that metadata has not been verified against an official Microsoft package.

This is not normally a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET Framework file. Installing those runtimes is therefore not the standard repair.

On a compatible installation, the file may be found under:

C:WindowsSystem32

That path does not prove that a file is 64-bit. On 32-bit Windows, System32 contains 32-bit system files. Windows also manages protected files through its component-servicing system, so the copy currently used by an application may not be the only copy maintained by Windows.

Why Windows 10 or 11 may mention it

SkyDriveTelemetry.dll should not be treated as a normal current Windows 10 or Windows 11 component. If a modern computer reports this filename, one of these situations is more likely:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • An old OneDrive or SkyDrive component is still installed.
  • An application is incorrectly requesting a legacy Windows file.
  • A system upgrade or cleanup removed part of an older Windows component.
  • Windows component-store files are damaged.
  • Antivirus software quarantined a file.
  • The named DLL exists, but one of its dependencies is missing.
  • An incompatible or incorrectly copied DLL is being loaded.

The message “The specified module could not be found” is especially misleading. Windows can show it when the named DLL is present but a dependency required by that DLL is absent.

Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the safest first repair when the error appears during Windows startup or while launching an old built-in OneDrive component.

Run DISM

  1. Press Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Enter:

cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  1. Wait for the command to complete. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
  2. Note whether DISM reports that the operation completed successfully or that repair files could not be found.

Run System File Checker

In the same administrator Command Prompt, enter:

sfc /scannow

SFC checks protected Windows resources and can replace damaged files with correct copies maintained by Windows.Microsoft’s SFC documentation

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restart the computer after SFC finishes, then repeat the action that produced the error.

A successful result is one where the application starts without the DLL message. If SFC reports that it repaired corrupted files, restart even if the error has not appeared again yet.

If DISM says that source files cannot be found, install all available updates first and retry. If the problem continues, use a matching Windows installation source. The source should correspond to the installed edition, architecture, and servicing level; a random ISO or copied DLL is not an equivalent repair.Microsoft’s DISM repair guidance

When manually repeating SFC and DISM becomes difficult to track, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows servicing remains the primary repair for this Microsoft component.

Fix 2: Install available Windows updates

Windows Update may restore a missing protected file or repair the component store.

Windows 10 or Windows 11

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Choose Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart if prompted.
  6. Return to Windows Update and check again until no further applicable updates are offered.

Windows 8.1

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select System and Security.
  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Choose Check for updates.
  5. Install the available updates and restart.

Windows 8.1 support ended on January 10, 2023. The consumer OneDrive sync application also stopped syncing on Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 on March 1, 2022.Windows 8.1 support status OneDrive sync-app retirement

If Windows Update cannot repair the installation, upgrading the operating system is safer and more useful than rebuilding a retired sync client indefinitely.

Fix 3: Repair or remove the old OneDrive component

If the message appears immediately after launching SkyDrive or an old OneDrive client, repair that component rather than replacing its DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose Apps & features or Installed apps.
  4. Search for OneDrive, SkyDrive, or a related legacy synchronization entry.
  5. Select the entry and choose Advanced options, if available.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Restart Windows and test the application.

If no repair option exists, uninstall the obsolete entry, restart, and install OneDrive only from Microsoft’s official guidance for the Windows version in use. Do not copy SkyDriveTelemetry.dll into the application folder.

On Windows 10 or Windows 11, the better solution may be to remove a stale legacy component and install the current supported OneDrive application. If an old third-party application explicitly requires the file, check whether the developer provides an updated build. Do not assume that installing current OneDrive will supply this legacy DLL.

Fix 4: Check whether antivirus software quarantined it

Security software can remove or quarantine files. This is a possibility, not proof that SkyDriveTelemetry.dll is commonly malicious or commonly detected as a false positive.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Look for an entry involving SkyDriveTelemetry.dll.
  5. Inspect the original path, detection name, and action.
  6. Do not restore the file merely because an application requests it.
  7. Restore it only if the original location, Microsoft digital signature, and Windows context can be verified.
  8. Run Scan options and perform a Full scan.

If the file is outside normal Windows or component locations, lacks a Microsoft signature, has an unusual name variation, or repeatedly reappears after removal, treat the situation as a possible unauthorized modification. Keep the file quarantined while investigating.

Fix 5: Check architecture and dependencies

The documented Windows file is 32-bit. Do not treat it as interchangeable with an assumed 64-bit version. A 32-bit program normally needs a 32-bit copy of a DLL, while a 64-bit program requires a compatible 64-bit binary. Windows file redirection also means that System32 and SysWOW64 do not have interchangeable purposes on 64-bit Windows.

Do not copy the file manually into either directory. That can create version conflicts and bypass Windows servicing and signature checks.

If the error says “The specified module could not be found,” verify both the named file and its dependencies. Useful clues include:

  • The file exists, but the application still fails.
  • The message appears only for one old application.
  • The error says a procedure entry point cannot be found.
  • The message says the file is not designed to run on Windows.

These symptoms can indicate an incompatible version, corruption, or a missing dependency rather than a missing SkyDriveTelemetry.dll itself. Repair the owning Windows component or application instead of installing unrelated runtimes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Investigate drivers only if the failure began after a driver change

A graphics or storage driver is not the normal owner of this Windows component. However, if the error began immediately after a system migration, hardware change, or driver installation, check Device Manager for a broader system problem.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand categories containing recently changed hardware.
  4. Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
  5. Open the Driver tab.
  6. Check the driver provider, date, and status.
  7. Use Roll Back Driver if the problem began after an update and the button is available.
  8. Otherwise select Update Driver, then Search automatically for drivers.
  9. Restart Windows and test again.

Do not use Device Manager to search for SkyDriveTelemetry.dll; it cannot repair an arbitrary DLL.

When checking many hardware drivers manually, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace repairing the Windows or OneDrive component that owns this file.

Fix 7: Use System Restore or Windows repair media

Use System Restore if the error began after a failed update, cleanup utility, debloating operation, or software removal.

System Restore rolls back system changes. It does not make an unsupported Windows 8.1 OneDrive client current.

If DISM cannot find repair files and SFC cannot repair the installation, use matching Windows installation media as a repair source. Follow Microsoft’s DISM guidance and ensure the source matches the installed edition and architecture.Microsoft’s Windows repair guidance

Do not use Regsvr32 as a generic DLL repair

Do not routinely run:

regsvr32 SkyDriveTelemetry.dll

regsvr32 is for DLLs that implement a self-registration entry point, normally DllRegisterServer. It is not a generic command for installing, repairing, or making every DLL load. Microsoft documents that some DLLs are not self-registerable and will produce a missing DllRegisterServer error.Microsoft’s Regsvr32 documentation

There is no verified evidence that SkyDriveTelemetry.dll is a self-registering COM component. Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or repair of the owning OneDrive component is the correct path.

Why DLL download sites are unsafe

An isolated download can have the wrong:

  • Windows build
  • File version
  • Architecture
  • Digital signature
  • Dependency set
  • Servicing context

Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory can overwrite a trusted file, create a load-order conflict, or conceal the underlying component-store damage. It may also expose the system to malware.

No current official standalone Microsoft download for SkyDriveTelemetry.dll has been verified. Use Windows Update, DISM with a matching repair source, System Restore, Windows repair media, or Microsoft’s official OneDrive guidance instead.

FAQ

Is SkyDriveTelemetry.dll a legitimate file?

Yes. Microsoft documents Skydrivetelemetry.dll as an x86 Windows 8.1-era file associated with the legacy SkyDrive/OneDrive component. A copy outside normal Windows locations or without a valid Microsoft signature still deserves investigation.

Does it belong to Windows or OneDrive?

Both descriptions can be accurate. It is a Windows system file associated with the OneDrive client built into Windows 8.1. “SkyDrive” remains in the filename because the product was renamed after the component was created.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is this a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 file?

Do not assume that it is. The strongest official evidence concerns Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2. On Windows 10 or Windows 11, investigate old software, upgrades, damaged system files, and stale OneDrive components.

Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Not as the first repair. This DLL is documented as part of a Windows SkyDrive/OneDrive component, not as a standard runtime file.

Why does Windows say a module is missing when the DLL exists?

The named DLL may depend on another file that is absent, damaged, or incompatible. The message can therefore identify the first load failure rather than the actual missing dependency.

Can I delete the error by uninstalling OneDrive?

Only if the error comes from a stale OneDrive component and you no longer need it. Repair Windows first, then remove or reinstall the related component through supported Microsoft procedures. If another old application requests the DLL, uninstalling OneDrive alone may not resolve that request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the safest long-term solution on Windows 8.1?

Because Windows 8.1 and its consumer OneDrive sync client are retired, migrate the computer to a supported Windows release rather than repeatedly replacing legacy files.
