vdsdyn.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called the VDS Dynamic Volume Provider. If vdsdyn.dll is missing or cannot load, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file belongs to the Virtual Disk Service (VDS), which manages disks, partitions, volumes, and dynamic-disk operations. Microsoft describes VDS and its dynamic provider in its VDS documentation. An application or installer can report the error when it requests a Windows storage component, even when the application itself is not the original source of the problem.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
This is the most important repair sequence when Windows reports that vdsdyn.dll is missing, corrupt, or unable to load. DISM repairs the Windows component store, and SFC uses that repaired source to replace damaged protected files.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait until DISM finishes. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run SFC:
sfc /scannow
- Wait for verification to reach 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application or storage operation.
Microsoft documents this order in its System File Checker repair procedure.
A successful SFC result may say that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations or repaired corrupted files. If it repaired files, restart before testing. If SFC says it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. Persistent failures require the recovery steps later in this guide.
If you are tired of hunting through repair output and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies; the free scan shows the findings, while repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows servicing remains the appropriate first repair for vdsdyn.dll.
Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the affected application
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
If only one program shows the error while Windows storage tools work normally, the application may be damaged, incorrectly installed, or searching for a private copy of the DLL.
For a traditional desktop program
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
If there is no Repair option, open the program’s own installer and look for Repair, Modify, or Change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a game or launcher-managed program
Open the launcher and use its Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity command if available. The exact menu differs by launcher. If verification reports damaged files, allow it to replace them and then restart the launcher.
If repair does not work:
- Uninstall the affected program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application developer’s official source.
- Install the current version.
- Start the program again.
Do not place a downloaded vdsdyn.dll beside the application executable unless the software vendor explicitly supplied that file as part of its own installation. A normal application should use the Windows component rather than obtain a random copy from a DLL site.
Fix 4: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software can quarantine a file after a detection or a false positive. Do not restore a file merely because an application requests it.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving
vdsdyn.dll. - If Windows Security identifies a genuine Microsoft system file as a false positive, verify the file’s Microsoft signature before considering Restore or Allow on device.
- If the detection is not clearly false, leave the file quarantined.
- Run DISM and SFC instead, then perform a full security scan.
Microsoft explains quarantine history and restore choices in its Protection History documentation.

Fix 5: Check the correct Windows architecture
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Do not choose a file based only on the name or on the highest version number.
On 64-bit Windows:
C:WindowsSystem32vdsdyn.dllis normally the 64-bit system copy.C:WindowsSysWOW64vdsdyn.dllis normally the 32-bit copy used by 32-bit software.
On 32-bit Windows, the expected system location is normally:
C:WindowsSystem32vdsdyn.dll
To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Start > Settings > System > About.
- Look at System type.
- Confirm whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
The System32 and SysWOW64 names are architectural conventions. Do not copy a 32-bit file into System32 on 64-bit Windows, and do not copy a file from another Windows release simply because its filename matches.
Recommended Free Tools
To check whether the expected files exist, open File Explorer and enter these paths in the address bar:
%windir%System32vdsdyn.dll
%windir%SysWOW64vdsdyn.dll
If Windows repaired the component successfully, the appropriate copy should be restored. If a file exists but the error continues, the problem may be a missing dependency, incorrect application bitness, invalid signature, or a private copy being loaded from the wrong directory.
Fix 6: Investigate “specified module could not be found”
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
This message does not always mean that vdsdyn.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the DLL or by the executable requesting it.
Check the following:
- Note the exact executable named in the error.
- Determine whether that program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Confirm whether the program is searching in an application folder instead of the Windows system directories.
- Check Event Viewer:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Review errors recorded at the time of the failure.
- Check the file’s properties:
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Review the Digital Signatures tab when available.
- Run DISM and SFC even if the named file exists.
- Repair the affected application if the error occurs only there.
Do not infer that installing Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET will restore vdsdyn.dll. It is a Windows VDS component, not a file belonging to those runtime packages.
Fix 7: Update storage and chipset drivers when the issue began after a hardware change
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
A driver or storage-controller change can expose failures in programs that interact with disks. Drivers are not a replacement for repairing vdsdyn.dll, but they should be checked if the problem started after a driver update, disk installation, controller change, or storage software installation.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Storage controllers, Disk drives, and IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, if present.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Properties > Driver.
- Review the provider, date, and version.
- If the issue began after an update, select Roll Back Driver when available.
- Otherwise select Update Driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Obtain drivers from the computer, motherboard, or storage-device manufacturer when Windows cannot find a suitable driver. Do not force an unrelated driver onto a storage controller.
If checking every storage and chipset device manually is taking too long, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and the manufacturer’s matching driver remains the safest choice when hardware-specific support is available.

System Restore changes system files, registry settings, and installed programs, but it does not normally remove personal files. Microsoft describes its behavior in System Restore.
Fix 9: Repair Windows when SFC cannot restore the file
Time needed: 30 minutes to several hours
If DISM and SFC repeatedly fail, use a matching Windows installation source, System Restore, Windows Recovery, or an in-place repair installation. The source must match the installed Windows release and architecture.
Do not overwrite vdsdyn.dll with an arbitrary download. Controlled replacement from matching Windows media can be appropriate during recovery, but it is an advanced procedure and should follow Microsoft’s servicing guidance.
Common causes of the error
| What changed | Likely explanation | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| The file is absent from its Windows directory | Component deletion or corruption | Windows Update, DISM, then SFC |
| Only one application fails | Damaged application or incorrect private DLL search path | Repair or reinstall that application |
| The issue follows an update | Incomplete servicing | Restart, update again, then DISM and SFC |
| Antivirus lists the file | Quarantine or possible malware | Review Protection History and scan |
| The file exists but will not load | Missing dependency or architecture mismatch | Check the executable, bitness, logs, and application repair |
| The issue follows a storage or driver change | Driver or controller compatibility problem | Check Device Manager and the manufacturer driver |
Why random DLL downloads and regsvr32 are poor fixes
Random DLL sites can provide malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, or a file that does not match the component store. Manual copying can also create version mismatches and hide the underlying servicing failure.
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. Microsoft describes it as a utility for registering DLLs that expose COM self-registration. VDS providers can participate in a registration model during installation, but that does not make this a safe command to run manually:
regsvr32 vdsdyn.dll
Do not use it as the first response to a missing-file error. Repair Windows or the affected application instead. If an official installer specifically instructs you to register a provider, follow that installer’s instructions and use the matching architecture.
FAQ
Is vdsdyn.dll part of Visual C++?
No. It is the Microsoft Windows VDS Dynamic Volume Provider. Installing Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET is not the normal fix.
Is vdsdyn.dll a virus?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component. A file with the same name in an unexpected application or temporary folder should be checked for a valid Microsoft signature and scanned.
Should I download vdsdyn.dll?
No. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching Windows installation media, or the affected program’s official installer.
Does regsvr32 fix this error?
Usually not. It is intended for DLLs that support COM self-registration, not as a general missing-DLL repair tool.
What if the error appears when starting a game?
Use the game launcher’s verify or repair function, then reinstall the game from its official source if necessary. Still run DISM and SFC when other Windows storage operations also fail.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is VDS obsolete?
Microsoft has transitioned new storage-management development toward the Windows Storage Management API, but existing Windows VDS components and tools can still be required. Do not remove or replace vdsdyn.dll simply because VDS is legacy.
