bthmtpcontexthandler.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called Bluetooth MTP Context Menu Handler. If Windows says it is missing or cannot load, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is associated with Bluetooth and Media Transfer Protocol integration. It appears to support Explorer and context-menu handling for Bluetooth-connected phones and media devices, although Microsoft does not publish a complete consumer-facing description of every internal function.
Before you repair bthmtpcontexthandler.dll
Do not assume that every file with this name is legitimate. A genuine copy should normally be inside the Windows system directory, typically:
%WINDIR%System32
On 64-bit Windows, Windows also uses System32 and SysWOW64 redirection for different application architectures. Do not copy a file between those folders manually.

Microsoft has also documented bthmtpcontexthandler.dll as a filename used by the Trojan:Win32/Spycos.B malware family. A copy found in %TEMP%, %APPDATA%, Downloads, a user profile, or a random game folder deserves suspicion even if its name looks correct.
The safest repair order is:
- Check the file path, signature, and Windows Security history.
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Run DISM, followed by SFC.
- Repair Bluetooth and connected-device components if needed.
- Use System Restore or a Windows repair reinstall if servicing is damaged.
- Scan for malware if the file keeps disappearing or appears outside the Windows directory.
1. Check the file’s path and Microsoft signature
Time needed: 5 minutes
This check tells you whether you are dealing with a missing Windows component or a suspicious file masquerading as one.
If Windows can find the file
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Open the Details tab.
- If an error names a program, right-click that program and choose Open file location.
- Search for
bthmtpcontexthandler.dllin the location that opened, and note its full path. - Right-click the DLL and choose Properties.
- Check the Details tab for the description Bluetooth MTP Context Menu Handler and Microsoft-related product information.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signer, choose Details, and check whether Windows reports that the digital signature is valid.
A file in %WINDIR%System32 with a valid Microsoft signature is consistent with a legitimate Windows component. That does not prove that every copy elsewhere is safe.
If the file is in an application directory, do not immediately replace it. The program may only be the process that triggered the error, not the owner of the DLL.
If Windows says the file is missing
Search for the filename in File Explorer, but do not restore an arbitrary result. A missing file in the Windows system directory is best recreated by Windows servicing tools, which select the correct build and architecture.
2. Check Windows Security Protection History
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes
Antivirus remediation is a common reason a protected system file appears to vanish.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections and quarantined items.
- Open any entry that mentions
bthmtpcontexthandler.dll. - Read the detected path, threat name, and action taken.
Do not restore the file simply because an application needs it. Microsoft warns that restoring a genuinely malicious file can put the system at risk. Restoration is reasonable only when the original location, Microsoft signature, and detection details establish that the file was a false positive.
If the detection points to %TEMP%, Downloads, %APPDATA%, or an unknown application folder, leave it quarantined and run a full Microsoft Defender scan:

- Return to Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
If a genuine system file was removed, DISM and SFC are safer than manually extracting a DLL from a download site.
3. Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10 minutes plus download time
A failed or incomplete update can leave Windows components out of sync.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install every available quality, security, and component update.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no additional updates are offered.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Open Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart.
Try the action that originally produced the error, such as opening File Explorer, connecting a phone, or viewing Bluetooth devices.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC. Updates can provide repair files, but they do not always repair an already-corrupted component store.
4. Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces missing or corrupted copies. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Choose Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
The useful SFC results are:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: no protected-file corruption was found.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test the affected operation.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run Windows Update again, restart, and repeat DISM followed by SFC once. If it still fails, use the recovery options below.
A missing-file error should disappear when Windows recreates the correct protected copy. A “not designed to run on Windows” message may also clear if the file contents or architecture were damaged.
Repeating SFC and DISM indefinitely is not useful when the component store itself is broken. 5. Repair Bluetooth and MTP-related device connections
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
This step is useful when the error appears while pairing Bluetooth hardware, opening a phone in File Explorer, or browsing a media device. It will not replace a missing Windows DLL, but it can repair a broken device or driver that triggers the failing code path.

On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then Troubleshoot.
- Choose Other troubleshooters.
- Run Bluetooth.
- Apply any suggested fix and restart.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Choose Troubleshoot.
- Open Additional troubleshooters.
- Run the Bluetooth troubleshooter.
Reinstall the Bluetooth device
- Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
- Expand Bluetooth.
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Choose Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal if prompted.
- Restart Windows.
Windows may reinstall the adapter automatically. If it does not, open Device Manager, select Action, and choose Scan for hardware changes.

For a phone or media player, also expand Portable Devices, right-click the affected device, uninstall it, disconnect the device, restart Windows, and reconnect it.
Do not disable security software while installing an unknown driver. Get a replacement driver from the computer, motherboard, or adapter manufacturer if Windows does not provide one.
Driver hunting is often the slow part because Bluetooth packages vary by hardware revision and Windows architecture. 6. Check Windows Features only when MTP is the trigger
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
The DLL is not a generic Media Feature Pack or .NET runtime file. Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is therefore not a justified first fix.
If a phone or media device is the trigger, check whether optional media components are available:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Optional features.
- Select View features.
- Search for the relevant media feature if your Windows edition offers one.
- Install it only when it is applicable to your edition.
- Restart Windows.
The exact available features depend on the installed Windows edition. This step does not replace DISM or SFC and is unlikely to help when the error appears during normal Explorer startup.
7. Use System Restore after a recent change
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes
System Restore is appropriate when the DLL worked previously and the failure began after an update, driver installation, cleanup utility, or other system change.

- Press Win+R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Next, review the affected programs, and choose Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the rollback.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs while leaving personal files untouched. It does not remove malware reliably, so run a security scan if the file was found outside the Windows directory or repeatedly returns after removal.
8. Repair-reinstall Windows when servicing will not recover
Time needed: 30 minutes or longer
If DISM and SFC repeatedly fail, or Windows updates cannot repair the component store, use a repair reinstall rather than copying a DLL manually.

On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and keep the PC connected to power.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving applications, files, and settings.
If that option is unavailable, use official Windows installation media for an in-place repair. Back up important files first, start setup from within Windows, and choose the option to keep personal files and applications when offered. A clean installation is a last resort because it can remove programs and data.
Does regsvr32 fix this DLL?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 calls a DLL’s DllRegisterServer entry point. It cannot recreate a missing file, repair corrupted contents, correct a wrong-architecture replacement, or restore a damaged Windows component store.
Some public inventories report registration-related exports for samples of this DLL, but that is not verified for every Windows build. Only consider registration when all of these conditions apply:
- The DLL is present in the expected Windows directory.
- Its Microsoft digital signature is valid.
- A specific Bluetooth shell-registration problem has been identified.
- Windows repair tools have already confirmed that the file is intact.
Do not use regsvr32 /u as a generic fix. If registration is genuinely required by a documented repair procedure, use the correctly installed file and the command prompt architecture appropriate to the component. When in doubt, leave registration alone and repair Windows servicing instead.
Why manual DLL downloads are unsafe
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A file with altered or unverifiable contents
- A copy that creates a dependency mismatch
- Malware using the expected filename
A downloaded DLL may silence one dialog while leaving the underlying corruption untouched. It can also place an untrusted binary in a location where another program loads it.

The application named in the dialog may only be the trigger. It does not prove that the program owns bthmtpcontexthandler.dll.

FAQ
Which Windows versions include this file?
Public file inventories list Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10-era builds. Those historical tables are not an official Microsoft compatibility matrix, and an authoritative public catalog does not establish exact current Windows 11 version coverage.
Should the file be in System32?
Normally, yes. %WINDIR%System32 is the expected system location. On 64-bit Windows, System32 and SysWOW64 serve different architecture paths through Windows redirection. Do not move or rename the file to “make” an application load it.

Why does the error appear when opening a game or app?
The program may be invoking Windows Explorer, Bluetooth, or MTP functionality, or it may simply be the process that exposes a system failure. The filename alone does not show that the game or app installed the DLL.
Will Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET fix it?
Usually not. This DLL is identified as a Windows Bluetooth/MTP component, not as one of those third-party runtimes. Repair Windows first.
What if the file disappears again after SFC repairs it?
Check Windows Security Protection History and any third-party antivirus logs. Then inspect startup entries, scheduled tasks, and the file’s actual path. Repeated removal from the Windows directory can indicate a false positive, disk corruption, or malware activity.
When should I use System Restore?
Use it when the failure clearly began after a recent update, driver, cleanup tool, or other system change and a suitable restore point exists. If malware is suspected, scan and remediate it rather than relying on System Restore alone.

For a genuine missing Windows copy, Windows Update followed by DISM and SFC is the safest first-line repair. If those tools cannot restore the component, use System Restore or an in-place Windows repair reinstall instead of downloading bthmtpcontexthandler.dll manually.
