Bethesda’s official guidance does not confirm a universal fix for recurring crashes on the original Switch.
Start with updates and a corrupt-data check
For the Switch message “The software was closed because an error occurred,” Bethesda says the error generally occurs when the game or console needs an update. Check for updates to Skyrim and Nintendo Switch first. Then check the game’s data using the console’s built-in tool:
- Open System Settings > Data Management > Manage Software.
- Select The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim.
- Choose Check for Corrupt Data and follow the prompts.
- If the check finds corrupt data, follow the prompt to redownload the software.
Bethesda says the prompted redownload in this procedure will not affect save data. This assurance is about that specific redownload; do not delete save data as a routine troubleshooting step.
Match the symptom to the right support route

Do not confuse Switch 2 updates with original-Switch crash fixes
Bethesda said an update on December 19, 2025 fixed an input-latency issue for Skyrim players on Nintendo Switch 2. That notice concerns input latency on Switch 2; it does not establish a fix for crashing or freezing on the original Nintendo Switch.

Bethesda’s available Switch troubleshooting guidance provides update, corrupt-data, and support-routing steps, but does not confirm a current Anniversary Edition-specific remedy for recurring crashes or freezes on the original Switch. It also does not establish crash frequency, a specific trigger, or affected software versions, so no single fix can be promised.
