The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition is already available for Nintendo Switch 2. It includes the base game, three expansions, and hundreds of Creation Club items; Bethesda also lists Switch 2-specific technical and control enhancements. Existing Switch owners can keep playing their older edition through compatibility or use the applicable upgrade route to access the Anniversary Edition.
Which Skyrim edition is on Nintendo Switch 2?
The Switch 2 release is Skyrim Anniversary Edition, not a renamed version of the older Switch Special Edition. Bethesda says the Anniversary Edition package includes the base game, the Dawnguard, Dragonborn, and Hearthfire expansions, plus hundreds of Creation Club items. Bethesda announced the release on 9 December 2025.
Bethesda lists enhanced resolution with DLSS anti-aliasing, improved load times, optimized performance, mouse controls, motion controls, and amiibo support as Switch 2 features. These are publisher-listed enhancements; they are not independent performance measurements.
Can you play your existing Switch copy on Switch 2?
Yes. Bethesda Support says the existing Skyrim Special Edition for Nintendo Switch remains playable on Switch 2 through compatibility. Playing that older edition does not give it the Anniversary Edition’s enhanced features. The two paths are therefore distinct: continue with the Switch Special Edition you own, or access the Switch 2 Anniversary Edition.

Digital download, storage, and the physical option
Nintendo UK lists the Switch 2 game’s download size as 53.2 GB and cautions that additional storage may be required depending on the hardware and how it is used. Check available space on your console before downloading; the amount of free storage you need can depend on what else is installed.
A physical code-in-box version is also available, according to Bethesda. That description means the package provides a code; it should not be assumed to contain a game card. Nintendo UK’s product listing gives the regional download-size and storage information.

Which option makes sense?
- Keep your existing Special Edition: Choose this if you are satisfied with the older Switch version. It remains playable on Switch 2, but does not receive the Anniversary Edition enhancements.
- Upgrade from the base Switch game: The Anniversary Upgrade is the route Bethesda lists for base-game owners; physical-game owners must open the in-game menu to access it.
- Use your Switch Anniversary Edition ownership: Bethesda says owners can download the Switch 2 edition free.
- Buy for the first time: Compare the full digital purchase with the code-in-box option, and account for the listed download size if choosing digital.
