Bound Sword is a Novice spell with a listed duration of 120 seconds, and combat casting avoids relying on the corpse Soul Trap exploit, which may be disabled by unofficial patches.
How to power level Conjuration with Bound Sword
- Get the Bound Sword spell tome. It is a Novice Conjuration spell. Court wizards and Phinis Gestor are among the vendors who may sell it; availability can depend on your game state and edition. See UESP’s Conjuration reference.
- Start a fight with a hostile. Find an enemy and make sure combat is underway before casting. Repeated Conjuration casts are useful for leveling in an active hostile encounter; casting when no hostile is present may not produce the intended skill gain.
- Cast Bound Sword repeatedly. Recast it as the weapon expires or is dismissed. Its listed duration is 120 seconds, so you can cast again when needed rather than waiting for the full duration. Equipping the spell in both hands can support quicker repeated casting.
- Manage magicka. Pause to regenerate magicka when necessary. Fortify Conjuration equipment, magicka regeneration, and relevant perks can reduce casting costs or downtime.
There is no reliable universal time-to-level figure: experience depends on circumstances and game setup. Treat this as a repeatable method, not a guaranteed number of levels per fight.
Other ways to gain Conjuration experience
Summoning or reanimation during combat
Summoning a creature or reanimating a body can grant Conjuration experience when the summoned or raised entity fights or encounters a hostile. The tradeoff is that your creature may defeat the enemy and end the opportunity to gain combat-related experience from that encounter, so you may need to find fresh enemies.
Soul Trap for ordinary soul collection
For intended Soul Trap use, cast the spell on a living enemy and defeat it while the effect is active. Bethesda explains that soul gems can be found as loot, in containers, or bought from certain vendors, and that charged gems can recharge magical items: Bethesda Support: What are soul gems? This is useful for collecting souls during normal play, but corpse-casting is not the standard leveling recommendation.

Soul Trap on corpses: a patch-sensitive exploit
UESP describes repeatedly casting Soul Trap on a corpse as a fast exploit and reports that the Unofficial Skyrim Patch fixes it on PC. That behavior depends on patch and mod configuration; do not assume it works in your setup. Bound Sword in active combat is the simpler option when you want a method that does not depend on the corpse-casting bug.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing a method for your game
| Method | Intended use or exploit | What you need | Combat and upkeep |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bound Sword | Combat casting; straightforward leveling approach | Bound Sword tome and enough magicka to cast repeatedly | Keep a hostile encounter active; recast as needed |
| Summon or reanimate | Combat use | A suitable summoning or reanimation spell | The entity needs to engage a hostile; you may need another enemy if it wins |
| Soul Trap on a living enemy | Ordinary soul collection | Soul Trap and an empty soul gem | Defeat the enemy while the spell is active |
| Soul Trap on a corpse | Bug-based exploit described by UESP | Behavior depends on patches and mods | May be fixed by the Unofficial Skyrim Patch on PC |
These options differ most in whether they rely on an exploit, how your installed patches affect them, whether you have the required spell and magicka, and how much active combat or enemy replacement they require.
