To level Sneak faster in Skyrim, crouch and move within range of enemies or creatures that could detect you, then land successful Sneak attacks when it is safe. For rapid farming, players commonly repeat low-damage Sneak attacks on meditating Greybeards or an early Helgen companion, but that is an exploit-like community tactic—not a guaranteed or risk-free method.
How Sneak gains experience
Bethesda’s Skyrim manual says: “Increase your Sneak skill by staging successful stealth attacks, or by sneaking within range of a target.” That means crouching and walking around an empty room will not provide the same movement-based progress: you need a nearby target that could detect you. The manual also says, “When the sneaking reticle is fully closed, you are hidden.”
Movement makes you easier to detect than staying still, according to the manual. Use cover, move deliberately, and watch the Sneak indicator. If the eye opens and a target starts searching, break line of sight and wait until you are hidden again before continuing.
Best steady method: sneak during real encounters
- Find a suitable target. Approach hostiles or creatures that could detect you, rather than practicing in an empty area.
- Crouch and advance carefully. Use terrain and cover, and pause if the Sneak indicator shows that you are no longer hidden.
- Make a successful Sneak attack when safe. Successful stealth attacks are an officially documented way to raise the skill. Avoid risking a fight you cannot handle just to get an attack in.
This approach builds Sneak as you explore, quest, and fight. The available evidence does not establish that it is the fastest method for every character build or edition.

Faster farming: repeated attacks on a target
Community guides and player discussions commonly recommend repeatedly Sneak attacking the meditating Greybeards at High Hrothgar or Hadvar or Ralof during the early Helgen sequence. Players describe these as convenient targets for repeated attacks, but this is community advice, not an official leveling recommendation.
- Use a weak weapon, such as a low-damage dagger, to reduce the chance of killing the target.
- Stop if the target becomes hostile or is at risk of dying. Attacking an NPC can turn the situation into combat.
- Do not assume the tactic will work identically across editions, patches, mods, or circumstances.
No reliable attack count, XP rate, or time to reach level 100 is established, so treat this as a potentially faster but repetitive tactic rather than a guaranteed shortcut.

Which approach should you use?
| Approach | What you do | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Normal play | Sneak near relevant targets and land safe stealth attacks. | Fits naturally into quests and combat; no source establishes a universal leveling rate. |
| Repeated-target farming | Repeat low-damage Sneak attacks on commonly suggested NPC targets. | May be faster, but is repetitive and can provoke hostility or kill the target; behavior may vary. |
| Movement-based sneaking | Crouch and move within range of a target that could detect you. | Useful during ordinary play, but movement is easier to detect than staying still. |
Do perks or Muffle make Sneak level faster?
The Stealth perk ranks make you harder to detect, and Muffled Movement reduces armor noise. Those benefits can help you stay hidden while using the methods above, but the available evidence does not show that either perk directly multiplies Sneak experience per action. Muffle is an Illusion spell, not a Sneak-leveling method by itself.
