If Skyrim Special Edition won’t open after you press Play in Steam, start by updating Windows and your graphics driver, restarting Steam, and verifying the game files. Then use the exact symptom or error message to choose a more specific fix. These steps are for the PC Steam version of Skyrim Special Edition; other editions, launchers, and consoles may need different support instructions.
First, identify the symptom
Bethesda’s Steam troubleshooting guide covers three common launch failures: pressing Play does nothing, the “Preparing to Launch” box stays on screen, or Skyrim appears to run in the background without opening. Note any error message before trying fixes, because some errors point to a specific runtime or Steam problem.
- Play does nothing or the game hangs on “Preparing to Launch”: work through the basic checks below.
- The game is in Task Manager but no window appears: close it and test the same basic checks, then temporarily remove mods and custom launch options.
- An error appears: follow the matching error-specific section after the basic checks.
If you are unsure which version you own, check the game’s name in your Steam library. Do not apply Special Edition requirements or instructions to the original Skyrim without confirming they fit your edition.
Try the low-disruption fixes first
1. Restart Steam and your PC
Close Skyrim and Steam completely, restart the computer, reopen Steam, and try launching again. This is a quick way to clear a stuck launcher or background game process.

2. Update Windows and your graphics driver
Install available Windows updates, then check the support site for your graphics-card manufacturer—NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel—for a driver appropriate to your hardware. Bethesda includes both Windows and graphics-driver updates in its launch guidance: Skyrim Special Edition won’t launch from Steam.
3. Verify the game files in Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files.
- Let Steam finish, then try launching the game again.
Bethesda says verification can take several minutes. It also notes that one or more files may fail verification normally when they are local configuration files that the process should not change. A failed-file count by itself does not prove the installation needs to be deleted and reinstalled.
4. Close background applications
Exit unnecessary apps and overlays, then test the launch again. Bethesda warns that background programs can interfere with starting the game. If you use recording, monitoring, or overlay software, close it temporarily rather than uninstalling it.

5. Test without mods or custom launch options
Mods and add-ons can stop working after a game update, and Bethesda advises testing without custom mods when troubleshooting crashes or a black screen. Temporarily disable or remove your mods using the method provided by the mod manager you use, and clear any custom Steam launch options for the test. If the game opens, re-enable mods in small groups to identify the one causing the problem. Keep track of what you disable so you can restore your setup.

Bethesda also records that a November 22, 2021 patch fixed one issue that could cause a black screen at launch; that historical fix does not establish the cause of every black screen today. 6. Try running Steam or the game as administrator
Bethesda suggests testing administrator privileges as a launch fix. Close Steam first. In Windows, right-click the Steam shortcut or the game executable, open Properties, and look for the administrator option under the Compatibility tab. Apply the setting, restart Steam, and test. Treat this as a troubleshooting test, not a requirement for every player; if it makes no difference, revert the setting.

7. Check required installers
A cancelled or interrupted first launch can leave required components uninstalled. Bethesda mentions DirectX, PhysX, Visual C++ components, and Windows updates; Steam should run required installers on first launch. If an installer was skipped, check the game’s installation folder for the relevant installer and use official Microsoft or hardware-vendor sources for any runtime you need. Do not download individual DLL files from third-party DLL sites.
Fix the error message you see
“The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b)”
Bethesda’s suggested sequence is to restart, try running as administrator, update Visual C++ Redistributable and .NET, check the drive where the game is installed, reinstall DirectX, and install Windows updates. Reinstall Skyrim only if those checks do not resolve the error. Follow Bethesda’s 0xc000007b troubleshooting steps for its detailed guidance.

Bethesda attributes these missing-DLL messages to a DirectX issue. Use Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer, restart the PC, and try again. Bethesda also lists updating graphics drivers and Windows, and reinstalling the game, among further steps if the runtime fix does not work. Never fetch the named DLL as a loose file from an unverified download site.

“Failed to Start game (Missing Executable)”
Bethesda says this error typically relates to game files not being delivered properly. Restart Steam and the PC, check whether another program may be interfering with Steam’s file delivery, and contact Steam Support if it persists. Bethesda’s Missing Executable guidance explains this branch.
“Unable to find an INI file”
Bethesda’s support result for this message says it can occur when Skyrim is installed somewhere other than the primary disk. Check the game’s install location in Steam and verify its files. See Bethesda’s INI-file troubleshooting page; avoid guessing at or deleting configuration paths unless the instructions for your edition confirm them.

If Steam reports that the game launches but the screen stays black, use the same reversible checks first: close background applications, test without mods and custom launch options, update drivers, and verify files. Bethesda’s crash and black-screen guide also points players to check system requirements and DirectX. A black screen alone does not identify one specific cause, so avoid assuming it is the same issue fixed by the 2021 patch.

Check whether your PC meets the published requirements
Bethesda’s PC requirements page lists the following specifications for Skyrim Special Edition. These are the figures published on that page, which names Windows 7, 8.1, and 10; that list may be dated and does not guarantee compatibility with every current Windows setup. Compare your actual PC details with the list before considering hardware changes.

These specifications are from Bethesda Support’s Skyrim Special Edition PC requirements page. To gather system details for troubleshooting, Bethesda explains how to create a DxDiag report on that page. Meeting the listed minimums does not diagnose a launch failure, and the requirements alone are not a reason to buy new hardware.
When to reinstall or contact support
Reinstalling is more disruptive than restarting Steam, verifying files, or testing without mods, so leave it until those checks—and any error-specific steps—have failed. Back up saves and note your mod setup before changing or removing files. If a missing executable persists after restarting and checking for interference, Steam Support is the relevant escalation. For other failures, provide Bethesda Support with your edition, Windows version, exact error text, and DxDiag details so the problem can be assessed against your system.
