In Slay the Spire 2, the strongest early habit is to make decisions for the run you have—not for a perfect build you hope to assemble. Read enemy intent, check what lies ahead on the map, and take card rewards only when they improve your deck. This guide focuses on durable beginner principles rather than card rankings that may change during Early Access.
What to expect when you start
Slay the Spire 2 is Mega Crit’s roguelike deckbuilder, released in Steam Early Access on March 5, 2026. You can play solo or climb with up to four players in online co-op. Mega Crit says players do not need to have played the first game to begin, and the sequel features five characters with different playstyles. See the Steam listing and Mega Crit press kit for the current product information.

A run is shaped by the cards, relics, potions, enemies, and routes you encounter. That variability is part of the game: there is no reliable promise that a particular combo or archetype will become available in every run. Treat each choice as a response to the situation in front of you.

Choose for the run you have
When a card reward appears, consider whether it solves a weakness you already feel or works with useful cards and relics you have actually found. A card that looks powerful as part of an imagined combo may do little now if the other pieces are missing. Stay open to the tools the run provides instead of drafting toward a fixed recipe.
#1 Best Overall
Skip rewards when they do not help
You do not have to add a card after every fight. A smaller, more focused deck can make its important answers more likely to appear, while a weak or irrelevant addition can make those answers harder to find. There is no universal ideal deck size to aim for; judge a reward by what it contributes to this run.
Think about both immediate needs and future value
Short-term survival and long-term deck development are linked. A defensive option can help you preserve health now, while a card that strengthens a plan already supported by your deck may improve later fights. When the choice is close, ask what problem is most likely to cost you the run: a gap you need to cover immediately or a lack of direction in the deck you are building.

How to make better combat decisions
Read enemy intent before spending energy
Before playing cards, check what each enemy intends to do and look at the whole turn. If a large hit is incoming, decide how much defense you need before spending energy elsewhere. On a safer turn, attacking may be the better way to shorten the fight and limit the danger you face later.
Evaluate the turn, not just the card
A card can be good in isolation and still be the wrong play right now. Consider the incoming damage, your available energy, the enemies’ remaining health, and what your other cards can accomplish. Take a moment to compare the cost of preventing damage with the risk of leaving an enemy alive; neither attacking nor defending is automatically the right answer every turn.

How to choose a route
Map choices trade different kinds of risk and opportunity. Regular fights offer combat rewards, elites can be more dangerous, shops provide a chance to spend resources, and rest sites can help you recover. Which option is sensible depends on your current health and how ready your deck is—not on a fixed rule to pursue a certain number of elites.
- Low health: Give extra weight to safer routes and opportunities to recover rather than taking risk just because a room might offer a reward.
- A deck that struggles in combat: Consider whether the likely benefit of a tougher encounter is worth the danger with your current tools.
- A deck and health total that feel ready: You may be better positioned to take on risk, but weigh the route ahead instead of judging one room in isolation.
- Before committing: Look at the sequence of rooms you are choosing between and consider how each route could affect your health and options later.
Should beginners play solo or co-op?
Solo play lets you focus on your own deck and combat decisions. Co-op adds teamwork: players climb together, and the game includes multiplayer-specific cards and opportunities for team synergies. Mega Crit’s FAQ says online co-op is for Steam friends and does not include matchmaking; check the official FAQ if you need the current multiplayer details.

If you are learning the basic rhythm of combat and route choices, solo keeps the decisions contained to one run. If you have friends to play with, co-op offers a different experience built around coordinating as a team. Neither mode is a prerequisite for the other.
How to learn from a lost run
Expect to need repeated runs to learn enemy patterns, understand how choices interact, and recognize which risks your deck can handle. Mega Crit says newcomers can start without playing the first Slay the Spire; you can learn the sequel on its own terms. The Steam listing also describes unlockable lore and distinct character playstyles, giving you more to explore as you play.
After a loss, focus on one decision you can reconsider next time: perhaps a card that did not support your deck, an attack that left you exposed, or a route that asked too much of your health. A run can still teach you something even when it ends before you reach your goal.
Why advice can change during Early Access
This is an Early Access PC game, and exact card values, rankings, and build recipes can shift as Mega Crit adds content and makes balance changes. The studio says cards, events, environments, enemies, and other content will be added and balanced during development. Its April 2026 newsletter also describes ongoing bug fixes, feedback review, and balance work without firm dates for future milestones. For that reason, treat highly specific recommendations as version-dependent and rely on the current game build rather than an undated tier list. Read the Mega Crit newsletter and news for official updates.
