Silent is a strong second pick if you enjoy planning card sequences. The other three are worth choosing for specific play styles, but there is no proven, universally strongest character across all difficulties and modes.
How this ranking works
This is a beginner and first-win ranking, based on learning clarity and early-run consistency—not a claim about each character’s theoretical ceiling. The comparison guide from Spire Builds, updated August 12, 2026, uses that same distinction and lists its context as main v0.107.1 / v0.110.0 beta. The lower three placements are especially tentative: available sources do not establish a representative current win-rate comparison across all five characters.
Slay the Spire 2 entered Early Access on March 5, 2026, with five playable characters: returning characters Ironclad, Silent and Defect, plus newcomers Necrobinder and Regent. Mega Crit says more cards, events, environments, enemies and other content will be added and balanced during Early Access, so rankings can change with updates. See Mega Crit Games’ February 19, 2026 announcement.
The characters, ranked for a first win
1. Ironclad — clearest first learning path
Ironclad is the most straightforward starting point if you want to learn the fundamentals. His visible tradeoffs among damage, Block and scaling make it easier to review a fight and understand what your deck lacked. That does not make him effortless: a successful run still needs a workable balance of offense, defense and a plan that grows stronger over time.

2. Silent — best for sequencing and card control
Silent suits players who like planning turns and shaping what they can play. Poison and Shiv approaches offer different ways to build toward damage, but each asks you to support the plan: Poison needs time and enough defense to survive while it works, while Shiv needs playable attacks, Energy and card draw. Picking every card that hints at a different archetype can leave the deck without a coherent direction.
3. Defect — for players who like building an engine
Defect is a natural choice if you enjoy assembling an engine and making it pay off over a fight. Engine-focused play can place more pressure on the opening turns before the pieces come together. This is a preference-based placement, not a measured claim that Defect has a lower or higher current win rate than the other characters.

- Exciting Action Cards: Flip 7 includes Flip Three, Freeze, Second Chance, and Score Modifier cards, adding twists and turns to every round.
4. Necrobinder — for defensive scaling and longer fights
Necrobinder rewards planning for fights that develop over time. The August learning-curve guide frames her as a long-fight planner. A PC Gamer panel published September 18, 2026 described storing Block on Osty as a form of defensive scaling and called her particularly friendly to new players. That is the panelists’ experience, not a controlled comparison of character performance.
5. Regent — for deliberate resource management
Regent is the pick for players who enjoy managing resources and assembling a plan carefully. In a May 2026 A10 account, GamesRadar+ writer Austin Wood discussed the challenge of building enough Block and reported that his personal Regent win rate was 21% lower than his own Ironclad and Necrobinder results. That figure is one player’s experience, not a community statistic, and it predates the September PC Gamer panel.

Choose by the kind of challenge you enjoy
| Character | A good fit if you want… | What to pay attention to |
|---|---|---|
| Ironclad | A legible introduction to damage, defense and scaling | Whether the deck can both survive now and improve its position over a fight |
| Silent | Sequencing and card-control decisions | Whether your Poison or Shiv plan has the time, defense, Energy and draw it needs |
| Defect | Engine-building and a payoff that develops over time | Whether the opening turns can hold up while the engine comes together |
| Necrobinder | Long-fight planning and defensive scaling | How your plan converts setup into enough lasting defense and progress |
| Regent | Deliberate resource management | Whether your resource plan also gives you enough Block to meet the fight’s demands |
For your own ranking, weigh learning clarity, safety in early fights, sequencing and resource demands, and how readily a character can adapt when card rewards do not support your preferred plan. Also keep difficulty, solo versus co-op mode and game version fixed when comparing tier lists. A list that mixes those conditions may be answering a different question from yours.
Why tier lists can disagree
Rankings measure different things. A dated March 31, 2026 list placed Ironclad and Necrobinder in S tier and Silent, Defect and Regent in A tier under its own criteria: high Ascension, co-op contribution, archetype flexibility and beginner accessibility. Its description tied the ranking to post-v0.101.0 balance, so it is historical context rather than a current ordering for every player.

Likewise, the September PC Gamer panel offers informed player opinions rather than controlled performance data; Pocket Tactics’ September 30, 2026 character build guide is useful for following a character-specific approach, not for proving a universal ranking. No representative current dataset comparing character win rates across the roster is established here. For high-Ascension decisions in particular, compare sources only when Ascension level, patch and solo or co-op mode match.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to play next
Start with Ironclad if you want the clearest route to understanding the game’s core tradeoffs. Pick Silent next if turn sequencing appeals to you; choose Defect, Necrobinder or Regent when engine-building, defensive scaling or resource management sounds more rewarding than a simple first-win path. Once you have a preference, use a build guide organized by character and version rather than treating any tier label as permanent.
