Slay the Spire 2 is worth buying in Early Access if you already enjoy learning a roguelike deckbuilder through repeated runs and are comfortable with an unfinished game. Wait if you want a complete campaign, a confirmed schedule for the remaining features, or a settled balance and stability picture. The sequel is a paid Steam Early Access release, not a finished version.
What Slay the Spire 2 is—and what has changed
Mega Crit launched Slay the Spire 2 on Steam Early Access on March 5, 2026. Like the first game, it is a run-based roguelike deckbuilder: you build a deck with cards, collect relics and potions, and adapt to changing encounters as you climb. The official store listing describes new and returning characters alongside new cards, enemies, environments, and story fragments. Steam’s store page presents it as a single-player game with online co-op.
The sequel’s most significant addition for groups is co-op for up to four players. Mega Crit says the mode includes multiplayer-specific cards and opportunities for team synergies. This is not a drop-in matchmaking option: the studio’s FAQ says co-op is limited to Steam friends and has no matchmaking system.
Who should buy it now?
Buy now if you enjoy the run-to-run learning curve
The best fit is someone who likes building a deck around synergies, responding to randomized encounters, and treating a failed run as a chance to learn. If that loop is already appealing, Early Access offers the core activity now, with solo play and friend-based co-op. The appeal is less certain if you need a finished story endpoint or prefer to buy only after a game’s balance and feature set have settled.

Wait if completeness matters more than playing early
Steam warns that Early Access games are incomplete and may change. Mega Crit says it is using this period for feedback-driven content balancing, quality-of-life work, stability improvements, and experimentation. That means the game’s current state should be judged as a changing build—not as a final version with a fixed feature list.
How complete is the Early Access version?
Mega Crit’s Steam Early Access description says it plans to add more gameplay content, a true ending, additional game modes, balance improvements, bug fixes, broader hardware compatibility, visual effects, and more languages. The developer writes: “Slay the Spire requires a lot of player feedback so we can balance content, add quality of life features, and make sure the game runs without issues.”

The Steam description estimates an Early Access period of one to two years by comparison with development of the first game, but says completion depends on when the game feels great. That is an estimate, not a promised release window. In its April 17, 2026 roadmap, Mega Crit listed goals including Steam Workshop support, a Bestiary, experimental modes, alternate Acts 2 and 3, a new character, more cards, events, relics and potions, other platform ports, achievements, and “True Victory.” The studio gave no firm schedule for those goals. The roadmap is a snapshot from that date, not a guarantee that every item remains outstanding or unchanged. Read Mega Crit’s Neowsletter and roadmap updates for the studio’s dated announcements.
For a sense of how quickly build details can become stale, PC Gamer’s March 17, 2026 overview described five characters, all three acts, and ten Ascension levels per character, while noting that the true ending did not appear to be available at that time. Those are observations about an early build, not a dependable description of the current version. Check the in-game version and current official updates for present feature availability.

Co-op, platforms, and practical limits
The official FAQ lists Steam Early Access on PC, macOS, and Linux, and confirms Steam Deck compatibility. Console and mobile versions are described as likely to follow Early Access, rather than as currently available releases. For co-op, all players should be prepared to use Steam friends to form a group; the FAQ says there is no matchmaking system.
Price and player reception
Steam displayed a US price of $24.99 when the store information in this review was accessed. Mega Crit says regional prices vary and that the price will increase after Early Access, so check the current Steam listing in your region before buying. The price may change, and the displayed US figure is not a promise of a permanent price.

At that same access time, Steam showed 91% Very Positive from 70,567 English-language reviews overall and 72% Mostly Positive from 3,824 recent reviews. These are changing Steam aggregates, not a stable score or a substitute for deciding whether the current build fits your expectations. Mega Crit also reported about 145 million runs accumulated a little over a month after launch in its April 17, 2026 update. That is a developer-reported run count for that date, not a current total or a count of unique players.

Slay the Spire 2 is an easy recommendation for players who want to explore its evolving deckbuilding now and accept that content, balance, and features are still in progress. Its four-player, Steam-friends co-op gives groups a new way to tackle the climb, but does not solve the lack of matchmaking. If your priority is a complete experience with a true ending and a settled roadmap, waiting is the sensible choice.
