It may appear while installing a printer, printing, opening printer preferences, logging in, or starting an old Samsung utility. If the error appears when no printer is being used, an incomplete uninstall or stale startup entry is a strong possibility.
First, identify what is requesting the file
Before repairing Windows, confirm the connection.
- Note the title bar of the error dialog. It may name a Samsung utility or another executable.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Look for Samsung printers, offline printers, duplicate entries, or an old printer that is no longer connected.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps and search for Samsung printer software.
- Right-click Start, select Event Viewer, then open Windows Logs → Application. Check errors recorded at the same time as the dialog.
- If you locate a copy of the DLL, right-click it, choose Properties, and inspect its Location. A path inside a printer-driver directory is more credible than a copy inside an unrelated game or application folder.
The file’s presence alone does not prove that it is safe. Check the Digital Signatures tab when available. Do not assume a file is genuine simply because its name is correct.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Samsung printer driver
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
This is the most likely fix because smcomu1.dll normally arrives as part of a printer-driver package.

Remove the old printer
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the affected Samsung printer.
- Select Remove and confirm.
- Return to Settings and open Apps → Installed apps.
- Remove old Samsung printer utilities or driver packages if they are clearly associated with the affected printer.
- Restart Windows.
Identify the exact model from the printer label, the old Windows printer entry, or the printer’s documentation. Do not choose a similar-looking model from a driver list.
Install the replacement package
Use Samsung’s official support or Samsung Update process for the model. Samsung’s driver guidance directs users to search for the model, select the operating system, and download the available driver. Samsung-branded printers that are now supported by HP should use the current HP driver for the exact model.
During installation:
- Connect the printer only when the installer requests it, unless its instructions say otherwise.
- Select the correct Windows 10 or Windows 11 package.
- Allow the installer to place all printer files together.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device and add the printer if it was not added automatically.
- Print a test page from the printer’s settings.
If the test page prints and the startup message disappears, the driver package was the cause. If the error remains, continue with the cleanup steps below instead of copying a replacement DLL.

Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Windows Update may provide a compatible printer driver, particularly when the manufacturer no longer offers a current package. It may not restore every Samsung control-panel feature.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait for Windows to search.
- Select the printer and follow the prompts.
- If it is not listed, select Add manually.
- Choose the connection type, such as USB or network printer.
- Select the correct manufacturer and model.
- If Windows offers Windows Update driver choices, allow the list to refresh before selecting a driver.
- Finish the installation and print a test page.
If Windows installs the printer but smcomu1.dll still generates an error, remove unused Samsung software from Settings → Apps → Installed apps. The active printer may work while a leftover utility continues trying to load the old plug-in.
Fix 3: Remove stale printer software and driver entries
Time needed: 10–25 minutes
An old printer queue can keep launching a broken driver even after the physical printer has been removed.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Remove every obsolete Samsung printer entry.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Uninstall Samsung printer utilities that belong to printers you no longer use.
- Restart Windows.
- Add back only the printer you still need.

printmanagement.mscand press Enter. - Open Print Servers → your computer → Drivers.
- Look for unused Samsung driver packages.
- Do not remove a package that another installed printer still uses.
- Remove only a confirmed obsolete package, then restart and reinstall the current driver.
If printmanagement.msc is unavailable, do not enable random Windows Features to compensate. Some Windows editions do not include the Print Management console. Use the printer removal and manufacturer installer instead.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Security software may have quarantined a printer component. This is possible, but restoring a file is safe only when it belongs to a verified driver package.

- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections recorded when the error began.
- Expand the relevant detection.
- Check its file path and detection details.
- Restore it only if the path belongs to the Samsung printer driver you intentionally installed and the package came from Samsung, HP, or Windows.
- If the file is in an unexpected application directory, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.
- Reinstall the complete printer package after resolving the detection.
Do not broadly disable Defender or whitelist an unknown DLL merely because the filename matches.
Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Time needed: 5–15 minutes, plus driver installation time
Public file references list both 32-bit and separate 64-bit builds, but they do not establish a complete, authoritative version matrix. Therefore, do not select a file by bitness alone.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings → System → About.
- Find System type.
- Note whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.
- Install the printer driver intended for that Windows architecture and exact printer model.
A 32-bit plug-in cannot be replaced with an arbitrary 64-bit file, and a file from another Samsung package may be incompatible even when the architecture appears correct.
If Windows reports “not designed to run on Windows” or a bad-image error, suspect corruption, the wrong architecture, or a mismatched legacy driver. Remove the package and install one complete, coherent driver set.
Fix 6: Repair the associated Samsung application
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
If the error names a Samsung utility rather than the print queue, repair or remove that program.

- Find the Samsung printer application.
- Select its More (…) button.
- Select Advanced options.
- Choose Repair.
- Restart Windows and test printing.
- If Repair is unavailable or fails, choose Reset, uninstall the utility, restart, and install the current model-specific package.
Traditional desktop software may instead be repaired through Control Panel → Programs and Features → Repair or Change.
If the printer works but the message appears at every login, the remaining problem is likely a startup component from the old utility. Remove the obsolete software after confirming that no current printer depends on it.
Fix 7: Run DISM and System File Checker
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
smcomu1.dll appears to be third-party printer-driver content, so SFC is not the first repair. Use these commands when several Windows components are failing or the driver installation has damaged broader Windows servicing components.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the printer driver and test a page.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. A successful scan does not guarantee that a third-party Samsung DLL will be restored, because SFC repairs protected Windows files, not every vendor driver file.

Use System Restore when the error began immediately after a driver update, printer installation, or software removal.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
- Test the printer and then install the correct current driver if necessary.
System Restore rolls back system files and settings without removing personal files, but it may not be available. Back up important work before using broader recovery options.

Why regsvr32 and manual copying usually fail
Do not run:
regsvr32 smcomu1.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal command for installing a missing DLL. A printer UI plug-in normally belongs in the driver package and is placed by the printer installer.
Do not copy a downloaded DLL into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- A random game or application folder
Manual copying is appropriate only when restoring a file from the original, verified vendor package and only into the package directory selected by that installer. If the file already exists but Windows reports “specified module could not be found,” another dependent DLL may be missing or the program may be searching a different directory.
