windows.devices.custom.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system component, not a DLL you should download from a random file-repository website. It belongs to the Windows Runtime Windows.Devices.Custom namespace, which helps applications communicate with custom hardware devices and send I/O control requests.
The safest repair is to update Windows, then run DISM and System File Checker from an elevated Command Prompt. Do not begin by copying a replacement DLL into a game or application folder.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, depending on the updates offered.

A missing or damaged Windows component is the most likely explanation. Updates can restore system files and correct an incomplete servicing operation.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Start the application that displayed the error.
If the program starts normally, no manual DLL download is necessary. If the message remains, continue with the repair commands below.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a repair source. These commands are built into Windows.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if the progress percentage appears to pause.
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
Microsoft’s repair instructions are available in its guide to using System File Checker to repair missing or corrupted system files.
A successful result may say that SFC found corrupt files and repaired them. Restart before testing. If SFC says it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If Windows cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, Microsoft’s guidance covers using a matching Windows installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess.
If the repair commands repeatedly fail, Outbyte PC Repair can show what system problems its free scan detects, while the repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and Windows Update, DISM, and SFC remain the appropriate built-in path.
Fix 3: Confirm whether the DLL is in the Windows system directory
Time needed: 5 minutes.
On a 64-bit Windows installation, the native 64-bit system version normally belongs in:
%windir%System32
The 32-bit system version normally belongs in:
%windir%SysWOW64
The names are counterintuitive: on 64-bit Windows, System32 contains the 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files.

To check the locations:
- Press Windows + E to open File Explorer.
- Click the address bar.
- Enter
%windir%System32and press Enter. - Search for
Windows.Devices.Custom.dll. - If you are using 64-bit Windows, also check
%windir%SysWOW64.
Do not copy a file between these folders. A 32-bit DLL placed in System32, or a 64-bit DLL placed in SysWOW64, will not fix an architecture mismatch.
Microsoft explains these locations in its documentation for the Windows file-system redirector. The exact version, size, hash, and architecture depend on the installed Windows build, so a file listing from another computer is not a reliable replacement.
If the file is absent, use DISM and SFC rather than downloading it. If the file exists but the error continues, the problem may involve a missing dependency, an incompatible application, or a damaged component store.

Fix 4: Repair the application that reports the error
Time needed: 10–30 minutes.
If Windows repairs successfully but only one application still fails, the application may have an installation, manifest, or compatibility problem. The program may simply be the first one that calls the affected Windows API; there is no reliably identified game or application that universally requires this DLL.
First determine whether the problem affects one program:
- Start another program that normally works.
- If other applications run normally, return to the affected program.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the program.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not help, select Reset only after confirming that it will not remove important application data.
- If necessary, uninstall the application.
- Download or reinstall it using the developer’s original installer, official launcher, or trusted installation media.
For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity function when available. Do not place Windows.Devices.Custom.dll in the game directory unless the application’s developer specifically documents that deployment method.
If the application requires a particular Windows version, update Windows or check its documented minimum supported version. An SDK used to compile a program does not guarantee that every older Windows build provides the API it expects.
Fix 5: Check Windows Security Protection History
Time needed: 5–15 minutes.
Antivirus software can quarantine a system file after a mistaken detection, although restoring an unexplained DLL is unsafe.
- Open the Start menu and type Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving the affected file.
- If Windows Security identifies a false positive involving an original Microsoft file, follow the available restore or allow instructions.
- Run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC afterward.
- Restart and test the application.
Only consider restoration when the file came from Microsoft or was repaired by Windows and the detection is demonstrably incorrect. Do not restore a DLL downloaded from an unknown website.
If the quarantine entry is unfamiliar, run a Full scan from Virus & threat protection. If you suspect deeper compromise, use Microsoft Defender’s offline scan option rather than disabling antivirus protection to force an unverified file into the system.
Fix 6: Check the application and device architecture
Time needed: 5–20 minutes.
A loader message can name windows.devices.custom.dll even when the real issue is a dependency that is missing or incompatible. It can also occur when a 32-bit application and 64-bit component do not match correctly.
Check the application’s requirements and Windows architecture:

- Press Windows + I.
- Select System > About.
- Look at System type.
- Compare it with the application’s documented Windows requirements.
- Install the correct current version of the application from its official installer.
Do not use historical file versions, hashes, or architecture labels from another Windows build as though they were universal. A file copied from a different build may have incompatible dependencies, servicing levels, or API behavior.
Fix 7: Inspect a related custom-device driver only when evidence points there
Time needed: 10–30 minutes.
Windows.Devices.Custom supports communication with custom hardware, but reinstalling drivers is not a general fix for this DLL. Use Device Manager only when the failing program communicates with a particular device and Device Manager shows a related warning.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories relevant to the hardware, such as Universal Serial Bus controllers, Human Interface Devices, or another category supplied by the device manufacturer.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Select Update driver and use the manufacturer’s official driver source when available.
- If the driver became faulty after an update, check the Driver tab for Roll Back Driver.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not remove unrelated drivers simply because this DLL name appears in an application error. If Device Manager shows no relevant problem, return to the Windows component repairs and application repair steps.
When several devices are involved, Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers its free scan identifies as outdated, while driver installation is performed by the full version; it is optional, and the device manufacturer’s driver remains the preferred source.
Why regsvr32 does not fix this file
Do not run:
regsvr32 Windows.Devices.Custom.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide the DllRegisterServer entry point. A .dll extension does not mean that the file is a self-registering component. Windows.Devices.Custom.dll is a Windows Runtime system component, so normal repair does not involve registering it.
Microsoft explains this limitation in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting documentation.
Why downloading the DLL is unsafe
Avoid websites that offer individual DLL downloads or instruct you to copy files into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder. A replacement may contain malware, belong to a different Windows build, use the wrong architecture, lack required dependencies, or conceal the actual component-store problem.
There is no verified Microsoft redistributable called “Windows.Devices.Custom Runtime” and no official standalone download package for this DLL. The Windows SDK provides development headers, metadata, libraries, and tools; the operating system supplies the platform implementation.

System Restore rolls back system state and can remove applications, drivers, and settings installed after the selected point. Microsoft describes this behavior in its guide to point-in-time restore for Windows.
If DISM, SFC, updates, and System Restore do not resolve the corruption, back up personal files and consider an in-place Windows repair installation or Windows reset.

FAQ
Is windows.devices.custom.dll a legitimate Microsoft file?
Yes. It is associated with Microsoft’s Windows Runtime Windows.Devices.Custom namespace and supports custom-device APIs.
Does it belong to a particular game?
No specific game, installer, or third-party product has been reliably identified as the universal source of this error. The affected application may only be the first program to call the missing or damaged Windows API.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET?
Not for this DLL alone. Those packages do not normally install this Windows Runtime system component. Repair them only when the error also names files belonging to those runtimes.
Why does the error say “specified module could not be found” when the file exists?
The named file may have a missing or incompatible dependency. It can also indicate an architecture mismatch or damaged Windows component store.

No. Repair Windows first, then repair or reinstall the affected application using its original installer. Copying a system DLL can create version and dependency problems.
What information is useful when asking for further help?
Record the exact error text, Windows version and build, affected application, whether the DLL exists in the expected system directory, and whether Windows Security quarantined it.
