“The program can’t start because smlogcfg.dll is missing from your computer.” If Windows says that smlogcfg.dll was not found, could not be loaded, or caused the Performance Logs and Alerts snap-in to fail, do not download the first DLL you find.
smlogcfg.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows file named Performance Logs and Alerts Snap-in. It belongs to the older Windows Performance Logs and Alerts component associated mainly with Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Windows 10 and Windows 11 should not automatically be assumed to contain this legacy DLL.

- An old application displays the error when it starts: repair or reinstall that application. It may be requesting an obsolete Windows snap-in or a dependency that is missing.
- The message says “The module was not found”: the named DLL may exist while one of its dependencies does not. Repair the Windows component and inspect the calling application.
- The file was recently removed by antivirus software: check quarantine, confirm the detection is a false positive, and scan the system before restoring anything.
- The file exists outside the Windows directory: treat it as suspicious until its signature, source, and parent application are verified.
- The snap-in is blocked by policy: a policy restriction is different from a missing-DLL problem and cannot be fixed by copying the file.

What smlogcfg.dll is
smlogcfg.dll is a Microsoft Windows DLL for the legacy Performance Logs and Alerts Snap-in. That snap-in worked with performance counters, trace logs, and alerts through Microsoft Management Console.

It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable file, DirectX component, game runtime, or general-purpose application DLL. Reinstalling Visual C++ or DirectX is therefore not the normal repair for this particular filename.
The strongest available version records identify 32-bit Windows XP builds:
| Recorded build | Architecture | Approximate size |
|---|---|---|
| 5.1.2600.5512 | 32-bit | 0.35 MB |
| 5.1.2600.2180 | 32-bit | 0.35 MB |
The historical location is:
%windir%System32smlogcfg.dll
Those records do not prove that either XP file belongs on Windows 10 or Windows 11. They also do not establish that one build is correct for every language, service-pack level, or architecture.
Error messages you may see
Reported wording varies by Windows version and by the program requesting the file. Examples include:
- “The program can’t start because smlogcfg.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “smlogcfg.dll is missing.”
- “Error loading smlogcfg.dll.”
- “smlogcfg.dll file could not be loaded.”
- “The module was not found.”
- “Snap-in failed to initialize. Name: Performance Logs and Alerts Extension.”
The wording matters. “The module was not found” can mean that Windows found smlogcfg.dll but could not load another DLL that it requires. On older systems, recorded dependencies include performance, Microsoft Foundation Class, database, and other Windows components.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates, then repair Windows
This is the safest first repair when the message comes from a Windows management tool or when the system file may be damaged.
Install pending updates
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available quality, security, and servicing updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no additional update is offered.
Windows Update can replace damaged operating-system components and repair compatibility problems introduced by an incomplete update. It will not necessarily install a legacy XP-era DLL on a current version of Windows.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window merely because progress appears to pause.
- Restart Windows after DISM completes.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired source to check protected system files. Microsoft documents this repair process in its Windows image repair guidance.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and enter:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Typical results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows did not find protected-file corruption. Continue with the diagnostic steps below if the error remains.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test the affected program.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and run SFC again. If it still fails, use Windows recovery or an in-place repair.
- Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service: restart into Safe Mode and run SFC there, or use Windows recovery options.
Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions explain the supported sequence.
If repeatedly hunting through Windows folders and repeating SFC/DISM leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying problems; its free scan shows what it found, while repair is handled by the full version, and it is not required for every case.
Check the result
Restart the computer and open the application or Windows tool that produced the message. If the error disappears, the repair worked.
If Windows 10 or Windows 11 still asks for smlogcfg.dll, do not download the XP file. Identify the exact executable requesting it instead. A current program may be incorrectly expecting an obsolete snap-in, or the actual missing component may be a dependency.
Fix 2: Repair the program that displays the error
When only one old application reports the problem, the application is often the correct repair target.
Use Windows app repair options
For a Microsoft Store or packaged application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset, if available.
Resetting may remove the application’s local settings or cached data, so use it only after Repair.
For a traditional desktop program:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify, if the installer provides one.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the application, restart, and reinstall it from the original installer or the application publisher’s official source. Do not place smlogcfg.dll beside the program’s executable unless that application’s own installer specifically supplies it.
If the program is very old, check whether it has a supported update or compatibility mode. Right-click its shortcut, select Properties, open Compatibility, and test an appropriate compatibility setting only after creating a restore point or confirming that the application can be reinstalled.
Fix 3: Check whether the snap-in is disabled by policy
A policy can prevent the Performance Logs and Alerts snap-in from loading. In that case, copying or registering a DLL will not solve the problem.
If this is a work or school computer, ask the administrator whether MMC snap-ins are restricted. Microsoft documents these controls in its MMC snap-in policy guidance.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Do not change domain or organization policy without approval. A policy message, access-denied message, or blocked-snap-in message points to administration rather than file replacement.
Fix 4: Check the file’s location, signature, and architecture
A genuine historical copy belongs in the Windows system directory, not in a game folder, Downloads, a temporary folder, or an unrelated application directory.
Check the path
- Press Windows + S.
- Search for
smlogcfg.dll. - If a result appears, right-click it and select Open file location.
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Review the Location, Details, and Digital Signatures tabs.
A file outside the Windows directory is not automatically malware, but it needs a clear explanation. Verify which application installed it and whether its signature identifies Microsoft Corporation. Do not replace a system file merely because the filename matches.
Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
The documented file records are 32-bit Windows XP builds. A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit process cannot load a 32-bit DLL.
On 64-bit Windows, system redirection commonly places 32-bit system files under:
%windir%SysWOW64
That naming is confusing: SysWOW64 is normally the 32-bit system directory on a 64-bit installation. Do not copy an XP file into either System32 or SysWOW64 just to make the filename appear.
Microsoft explains the behavior in its file-system redirector documentation and 32-bit application guidance.
Fix 5: Use regsvr32 only for confirmed registration problems
Unlike many ordinary runtime DLLs, smlogcfg.dll is recorded as exporting DllRegisterServer and DllUnregisterServer. That means registration can technically apply to the correct build.

Only attempt registration after confirming all of the following:

For a 32-bit file in the regular system directory on a 32-bit Windows installation, an elevated Command Prompt command would be:
%windir%System32regsvr32.exe %windir%System32smlogcfg.dll
On 64-bit Windows, use the registration tool matching the DLL:

For example, if a verified 32-bit copy is located in the 32-bit system directory:
%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe %windir%SysWOW64smlogcfg.dll
Microsoft explains the command in its regsvr32 reference and COM self-registration documentation.
If registration reports that DllRegisterServer was not found, stop. The file may be the wrong build, the wrong architecture, or not a compatible self-registering DLL. If registration succeeds but the snap-in still fails, investigate dependencies, policy, performance-counter corruption, and the calling program.
Fix 6: Check antivirus quarantine and scan for malware
A security product may quarantine a damaged or suspicious copy. Do not disable antivirus protection permanently and do not restore the file automatically.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries involving
smlogcfg.dll. - Confirm the file’s original path and the application that used it.
- Restore it only if you have verified that the detection is a false positive.
- Run a Full scan.
- Restart Windows.
- Run DISM and SFC again.
If the file is found in an application directory, temporary directory, or user profile rather than the Windows directory, leave it quarantined until its origin is established.

Do not expect Windows Features to install a standalone smlogcfg.dll package on Windows 10 or Windows 11. The Performance Logs and Alerts snap-in is a legacy component, and current Windows may not include this particular file.
You can still check whether an optional Windows component is relevant:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the available features.
- Enable only a feature that the affected application’s documentation specifically requires.
- Select OK and restart if prompted.
Do not enable random features as a substitute for identifying the calling program.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf the application is old and depends on performance-counter libraries, database components, or Microsoft Foundation Class files, reinstall the application using its original installer or a supported update. A “module not found” message may refer to a dependency rather than smlogcfg.dll itself.
Fix 8: Update or reinstall a related driver only when evidence points there
A driver is not the normal owner of smlogcfg.dll, so Device Manager should not be your first repair. Use it only when the affected legacy application depends on a hardware driver and Event Viewer or the application vendor identifies that driver as the failing component.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the affected hardware.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider, date, and version.
- Select Update Driver and then Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart and test the application.
For a clean driver reinstall:
- In the device’s Properties, open the Driver tab.
- Select Uninstall Device.
- Confirm only if you have the correct replacement driver available.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the driver from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel.
Manually hunting through dozens of driver packages can be tedious when the driver is genuinely involved. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it found, while driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is not required for a smlogcfg.dll repair unless a driver dependency is actually confirmed.
Fix 9: Repair Windows from matching installation media
For Windows XP or Windows 2000, use the original installation CD or matching Microsoft service-pack repair media. The recorded XP builds are not universal replacements, and a file from a different service-pack level, language, or architecture can create a second problem.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
For Windows 10 or Windows 11, use Windows recovery or an in-place repair when:
- DISM and SFC cannot repair corruption.
- Windows Update repeatedly fails.
- System files are missing across multiple components.
- The error persists after the parent application is repaired.
- Disk or file-system corruption is suspected.
Back up important files first. A repair installation must match the installed Windows edition and architecture. If the disk is failing, address the hardware problem before repeatedly replacing system files.
Why downloading smlogcfg.dll is usually the wrong fix
Random DLL download sites cannot establish that their file is:
- From the correct Windows release.
- The correct service-pack level.
- The correct architecture.
- Digitally authentic.
- Compatible with the calling process.
- Accompanied by every required dependency.
Copying an XP DLL into Windows 10 or Windows 11 can also create version conflicts and DLL search-order problems. Copying it into a game or application folder may hide the original problem while introducing a file that the program was never designed to use.
Recommended Free Tools
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching installation media, or the affected application’s official installer instead. There is no verified need to obtain a standalone smlogcfg.dll download for current Windows.
What to do if every repair command succeeds
If DISM and SFC complete successfully but the error remains:
- Write down the exact error and the time it appears.
- Identify the executable shown in the error or Event Viewer.
- Open Event Viewer by searching for it from Start.
- Review Windows Logs and Application and Services Logs around the failure time.
- Confirm whether the error occurs only in one application.
- Test a clean boot if a third-party startup service may be involved.
- Repair or reinstall the parent application.
- Check whether System Restore has a restore point from before the problem.
- Consider an in-place Windows repair if multiple built-in tools are failing.
If the file is present but the Performance Logs and Alerts snap-in cannot initialize, registration alone may not help. Dependencies, policy, corrupted performance data, architecture mismatch, or an obsolete caller may be responsible.
Prevention
- Keep Windows updated.
- Leave Microsoft Defender or another reputable security product enabled.
- Do not copy DLLs from random download pages.
- Keep installers for old applications and their required service packs.
- Create a restore point before major driver or system changes.
- Investigate the application that requests a DLL rather than treating every DLL message as an isolated file problem.
- Back up important files before disk repairs or Windows recovery.
FAQ
Is smlogcfg.dll a legitimate Windows file?
Yes. It is identified as the Microsoft Performance Logs and Alerts Snap-in component. Its strongest documented association is with Windows 2000 and Windows XP-era systems.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallShould Windows 11 contain smlogcfg.dll?
Not necessarily. There is no reliable evidence that current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installations should contain a standalone copy. Do not download the XP file simply because the filename appears in an error.
Is smlogcfg.dll part of Visual C++?
No. It is a Windows Performance Logs and Alerts snap-in DLL, not a Visual C++ runtime. Reinstalling Visual C++ Redistributables is not the normal fix.
Can I copy the file into System32?
No, not as a general repair. A 32-bit XP DLL may be the wrong version, architecture, and operating-system component for the computer showing the error.
Does regsvr32 fix a missing smlogcfg.dll?
No. Registration can address a COM registration problem after the correct file is verified, but it cannot restore a missing file or repair dependencies.

It may mean that a dependency required by smlogcfg.dll is missing, even if the named file exists. Repair Windows and the parent application before attempting manual replacement.
When should I reinstall the application?
Reinstall it when only one old program reports the error, especially if Windows tools work normally. The program may be requesting an obsolete snap-in or may have been partially removed.
When should I repair Windows?
Use DISM followed by SFC when built-in Windows tools report the error, multiple system components are damaged, or the file may have been removed or corrupted. On XP or Windows 2000, use matching installation media instead.
