“The program can’t start because sndmfc.dll is missing from your computer.” “The code execution cannot proceed because sndmfc.dll was not found.”
You may also see “The specified module could not be found,” “sndmfc.dll is missing or corrupt,” or “sndmfc.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.” These are common examples, and the exact wording depends on the game and Windows version.

The 60-second answer
sndmfc.dll is not a Windows system file. It is an old 32-bit application DLL found in documented Max Payne and Max Payne 2 game installations, normally beside the game’s executable.
Do not download a replacement from a random DLL website, copy it into C:WindowsSystem32, or run regsvr32 as a first step. The safest fix is to repair the exact game installation through its launcher or reinstall it from the original installer.

If the affected game is Max Payne or Max Payne 2:
- Close the game and its launcher.
- Remove unofficial mods or patches temporarily.
- Use the launcher’s file verification or repair function.
- Check Windows Security’s Protection history.
- Start the game again from the repaired installation.
What is sndmfc.dll?
sndmfc.dll is an application component used by older game software. Max Payne distributions contain it alongside files such as MaxPayne.exe, e2mfc.dll, grphmfc.dll, and rlmfc.dll. Max Payne 2 installations also contain the file.
An examined sample is PE32/x86 and was built with Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0. That means the file belongs to the older 32-bit game environment. It does not mean every release has the same size, version, hash, or internal metadata.
There is no verified evidence that sndmfc.dll ships with Windows. It is also not directly supplied by the current Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable or the DirectX End-User Runtime.

The file should normally sit in the game’s own installation folder, next to the executable that loads it. A 32-bit DLL does not automatically belong in System32. On 64-bit Windows, System32 generally contains 64-bit Windows system binaries.
Why the error appears

The “not designed to run on Windows” message can indicate corruption, an incompatible architecture, or a damaged dependency. It does not prove that Windows itself deleted the file.
Fix 1: Verify the game installation
This is the most likely solution for Max Payne and Max Payne 2.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Start the game from Steam.
Steam compares the installed files with the game’s expected files and replaces missing or damaged content. If the verification reports repaired files and the game starts, the problem was an incomplete installation.

If verification succeeds but the error remains, open the game’s installation folder and confirm that the shortcut is launching the same copy that Steam repaired. Multiple copies of an old game are common, especially after a manual installation or a migration to a new drive.
Rockstar Games Launcher
- Open Rockstar Games Launcher.
- Select Settings.
- Under My installed games, select the affected game.
- Choose Verify Integrity.
- Wait for the repair to complete.
- Launch the game from the launcher.
If the launcher does not list the game, it may not be managing the installation that produced the error. Locate the game’s actual executable and determine which launcher or installer owns that folder before repairing it.
Xbox app on PC
- Open the Xbox app.
- Select My Library.
- Find the game.
- Select the game’s … menu.
- Choose Manage.
- Open Files.
- Select Verify and Repair.
- Launch the game after the process completes.
Do not copy a file from a different edition into this installation. Even when two releases use the same filename, their surrounding files and dependencies may differ.
Fix 2: Reinstall from the original installer
Use this method for a disc edition, standalone installer, or a launcher that cannot repair the files.

- Open Settings with
Windows+i. - Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps.
- Find the game.
- Select its three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the game from the original disc or legitimate installer.
- Apply the game’s official updates, if supplied by its platform.
- Start the game before adding mods or unofficial patches.
Install the game into its own folder rather than manually copying DLLs into a Windows directory. If the clean installation works, add modifications one at a time and test after each change.
If sndmfc.dll disappears again immediately after installation, stop reinstalling repeatedly. Investigate antivirus actions, disk errors, permissions, cloud-sync software, and duplicate installations.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Antivirus software may quarantine an old game file, particularly when the game came from a repack, unofficial installer, mod bundle, or altered executable. A quarantine event does not prove the file was safe.

- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an entry naming
sndmfc.dllor the game’s installation folder. - Check the detection details and file path.

If the source is uncertain, do not restore the quarantined file. Remove the installation, run a full Microsoft Defender scan, and reinstall from original media.
Fix 4: Check the neighboring dependencies
Some Max Payne installations contain older runtime files alongside sndmfc.dll, including files associated with legacy Microsoft libraries. If the error changes to name mfc42.dll, msvcp60.dll, or msvcr71.dll, that is a separate dependency problem.
Repair the game first. Do not assume that the current Visual C++ package installs these very old libraries. Microsoft’s current supported package uses vc_redist.x86.exe and vc_redist.x64.exe for supported Visual C++ 2015–2022-compatible applications. It does not directly replace every Visual C++ 6.0-era file used by an old game.
If the installer includes a Redist, Support, or Prerequisites folder, run its legitimate prerequisite installer. Do not obtain individual runtime DLLs from an unverified download site.
The legacy DirectX End-User Runtime can help when an old game lacks older DirectX components, but it does not provide sndmfc.dll. Install it only when the game reports a DirectX-related error or its original installer requires it.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components when other programs also fail
DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They normally will not recreate a third-party game DLL, so use them when several unrelated applications are reporting missing or corrupt files.

- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for DISM to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after SFC completes and test the game again.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test other affected programs as well. If both commands complete without resolving the game error, return to the game launcher and reinstall the game. Windows repair cannot substitute for the game’s private sndmfc.dll.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time when the actual problem is a damaged game directory. Fix 6: Check drivers only when the symptoms point there
A graphics or audio driver update will not normally restore sndmfc.dll. Investigate drivers when the game also crashes after startup, produces display or sound failures, or began failing immediately after a hardware or driver change.
To inspect devices:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and Audio inputs and outputs.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the driver status and installation date.
Use Update driver only with a driver from the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update. If the failure began after an update, select Roll Back Driver when that option is available. Restart Windows and test the game.
Finding the correct driver manually can mean comparing hardware IDs, Windows versions, and vendor packages. Why regsvr32 is usually wrong
regsvr32 sndmfc.dll is not a general-purpose DLL repair command. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the COM self-registration entry point DllRegisterServer. An old game library that is loaded privately by the game does not become usable merely because it is registered.
Running the command may produce a registration error, or it may create the impression that the file belongs in a system directory. Restore the game’s files through its launcher or installer instead.
Do not download sndmfc.dll separately
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong game edition, the wrong architecture, or a file that does not match the executable. A replacement may also hide the real cause, such as a damaged installation or antivirus quarantine.

- Steam’s verification process for a Steam installation
- Rockstar Games Launcher’s integrity check
- Xbox app’s Verify and Repair function
- The original disc or legitimate standalone installer
- The game’s bundled prerequisites
Do not copy sndmfc.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. The correct location is normally the application directory that contains the matching game executable.

If the problem started after a system change
If the error began immediately after an installation, update, or driver change, System Restore may return Windows to an earlier restore point.
- Press
Windows+r. - Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure began.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
System Restore does not replace the need to repair a missing game file, but it can help when a recent system change also affected other applications.

Is sndmfc.dll a Windows file?
No verified evidence shows that it ships with Windows. It is an old application DLL associated most strongly with Max Payne and Max Payne 2 installations.

Not as the first step. Repair the game installation. A current Visual C++ Redistributable does not directly install sndmfc.dll or necessarily replace the older libraries used by the game.
Should I put the file in System32?
No. Place no manually downloaded copy there. The game normally loads its own DLL from its installation folder.
What if verification succeeds but the error remains?
Check the shortcut target, duplicate game folders, antivirus Protection history, mods, permissions, and the exact edition being launched. The shortcut may point to an old un repaired copy.
