What is SNK 40th Anniversary Collection?
It is an anthology of SNK games from before the Neo Geo era. NIS America describes a catalog that includes arcade originals and, for many titles, home-console versions. That distinction matters: an NES port is not always a simple substitute for the arcade game, since controls and play can differ.
The publisher’s product page names Alpha Mission, Athena, Crystalis, Ikari Warriors, Ikari Warriors II: Victory Road, Ikari Warriors III: The Rescue, Guerilla War, P.O.W., Prehistoric Isle, Psycho Soldier, Street Smart, TNK III, and Vanguard. The playable catalog also includes Iron Tank: Invasion of Normandy, among other entries identified in launch-era reviews.
How many games are included?
There is no single count that answers every version of the question: reviews counted distinct games and playable arcade/home variants differently, and the collection later received additions. GameSpot described 14 games at launch, while Nintendo Life counted 21 playable entries when alternate arcade and NES versions were counted separately. Nintendo Life later described 24 distinct titles after planned additions; that was a 2018 review-era figure, not a current count of all software entries.

Nintendo’s current US Switch listing confirms free DLC for Beast Busters and S.A.R. Search and Rescue. That listing does not make the different counting methods interchangeable: a distinct game, a version of that game, and a software entry are not necessarily the same unit.
What the review scores say—and what they do not
Nintendo Life’s Chris Scullion reviewed the North American Switch version on November 6, 2018, and awarded it 8/10. He praised the range of games and the museum, but called Street Smart the weakest entry and reported occasional screen warping and stuttering in some arcade games.

GameSpot’s Peter Brown also gave the collection 8/10, publishing his review on November 5, 2018. He highlighted preservation, documentation, assist options, autoplay, rewind, scans, and soundtracks. His central reservation was that some games are more interesting as historical artifacts than fun to play today. These are two favorable reviews, not evidence of a universal critical consensus or a fresh assessment of the current build.
How arcade and home versions differ
The alternate versions are a meaningful part of the collection, but they can change the experience rather than simply provide another way to play the same game. Nintendo Life describes arcade Guerrilla War as a twin-stick game, a control style distinct from its NES version. GameSpot notes that the NES Ikari Warriors port only lets the player shoot in the direction of movement, unlike the arcade game’s independent aiming.

That makes the collection useful for comparing how SNK games were adapted for home hardware, though the ports may feel less capable or simply different from their arcade counterparts. If you are choosing a version for play rather than comparison, check which control scheme you prefer before settling in.
The museum mode is a major part of the package
The archive adds context that the playable catalog alone cannot. Nintendo Life’s review describes a museum history section covering 74 SNK games from 1978–1990, with artwork, promotional material, screenshots, and annotations. GameSpot likewise praised the supplemental scans and soundtracks. The museum is therefore a substantial reason to consider the collection even if not every included game becomes a favorite.

Assists and display options
NIS America lists rewind, save-anytime functionality, updated 1080p graphics, and redesigned controls. Reviews also discuss autoplay or watch options, which can help when you want to see a game run without playing it yourself. Display adjustments discussed by reviewers include screen orientation, scanlines, scaling, and borders.
These options help make older games easier to approach and inspect. They do not change the underlying design or guarantee that every title feels modern; the value is having ways to manage presentation and reduce some of the friction of older arcade play.

Is it available on Switch or PS4?
NIS America documents Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 editions, including standard and Limited Editions. Nintendo’s current US store page lists a digital Switch edition and says play behavior is consistent on Switch 2. It lists a 1.2 GB download, TV, tabletop, and handheld modes, and single-system play for one or two players. Those are current store-listing details, not a guarantee of physical stock or pricing.
