Green Rain is a random summer event in Stardew Valley that turns most of the valley into a short-lived gathering opportunity. Check the TV forecast, then use the day to collect weeds and moss; if you need Fiddlehead Ferns, look specifically for Green Rain Tree Type 3. The event was introduced in Update 1.6, whose official changelog describes it as “a new environmental ‘event’ in summer.”
When does Green Rain happen?
Green Rain occurs randomly once each summer, on one of eight eligible dates: the 5th, 6th, 7th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 18th, or 23rd. The Stardew Valley Wiki’s weather reference documents these in-game mechanics. Check the television weather forecast each day so you can plan around the event rather than relying on a fixed date.
During Green Rain, a translucent green effect is visible even indoors. Large quantities of weeds and Green Rain Trees appear across the valley, but not on the Beach or in the Calico Desert. These are temporary event changes, not a permanent change to the map.
What should you do during Green Rain?
Treat the day as a gathering run. Scythe weeds and collect moss for general crafting materials, and inspect the unusual trees before chopping them. The event’s tree changes are documented by the Stardew Valley Wiki; the probabilities below are game mechanics, not real-world statistical findings.

- Use the event to collect tree materials, but choose the tree type according to what you need rather than treating every unusual tree as interchangeable.
How trees change
According to the Wiki’s weather reference, each stage-1 tree sapling has a 50% chance to advance to stage 4; stage-2 and stage-3 saplings advance to stage 4. Stage-4 saplings then receive growth equivalent to three nights. Each mature tree has a 50% chance to gain moss. Mature Oak and Maple trees each have a 75% chance to become temporary Green Rain Trees for the event.
Green Rain Tree types and their drops
The three Green Rain Tree types differ in what they provide. The Stardew Valley Wiki’s Green Rain Trees page describes their behavior and drops, citing game data.

| Tree type | Moss | What it can provide | Fiddlehead Ferns |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type 1 | May appear with or without moss | Moss, wood, sap, Mossy Seeds, and possible Hardwood when chopped with the Lumberjack profession | Not listed as a source |
| Type 2 | May appear with or without moss | Moss, wood, sap, Mossy Seeds, and possible Hardwood when chopped with the Lumberjack profession | Not listed as a source |
| Type 3 | Cannot grow moss | Up to two Mossy Seeds when chopped | Five from the tree and one from its stump; a tapper produces one every two days except in winter |
Types 1 and 2 are general resource trees. Type 3 is the one to prioritize when you specifically want Fiddlehead Ferns. Its six-fern total applies to chopping the tree and then its stump; tapping it instead provides a recurring fern yield while the tree remains standing, except during winter.

No. The Stardew Valley Wiki’s weather page history records that version 1.6.4 changed Year 1 Green Rain so players can no longer give gifts to NPCs during the event. Older guides that say gifting works may be out of date.
