What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
snmpthrd.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with the WMI SNMP Provider. If Windows or an older management program says snmpthrd.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, restore the Windows SNMP features rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file’s description is “WMI SNMP Thread & Log Library.” It belongs to the Windows SNMP and WMI stack, not to Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a particular game. Microsoft describes the WMI SNMP Provider as the bridge that exposes SNMP information through Windows Management Instrumentation.

What the error usually means
You may see wording such as:
- “This application has failed to start because snmpthrd.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because snmpthrd.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading snmpthrd.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “The file snmpthrd.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “The application could not be started because snmpthrd.dll is missing.”
These are common reported variants, but they are not all confirmed Microsoft diagnostic messages.
The phrase “The specified module could not be found” needs particular care. It can mean that Windows cannot find snmpthrd.dll, but it can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL is missing. Replacing the named file blindly may therefore leave the real problem untouched.
The request may come from Windows itself, an installer, an enterprise monitoring tool, an old administration program, or an application that was packaged with an outdated assumption about Windows components. First identify the program shown in the error. If only one old application reports the problem, repairing that application may eventually be more important than repairing Windows.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFix 1: Install the SNMP and WMI SNMP Provider features
This is the safest and most likely fix on current Windows when a legitimate monitoring or management program needs the component.
Microsoft treats SNMP and the WMI SNMP Provider as deprecated optional capabilities on current Windows versions, but they remain available on supported systems through optional feature installation. The exact capability names are:
SNMP.Client~~~~0.0.1.0
WMI-SNMP-Provider.Client~~~~0.0.1.0
Install through Windows Settings
On Windows 11:
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Optional features.
- Select View features next to Add an optional feature.
- Search for Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).
- Select it, choose Next, then select Install.
- Return to the optional feature list.
- Search for WMI SNMP Provider.
- Select it and complete the installation.
- Restart Windows.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Optional features.
- Select Add a feature.
- Install Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).
- Use the same screen to install WMI SNMP Provider.
- Restart Windows.
The labels can vary slightly between Windows builds. If the feature is not listed, use the PowerShell method below.
Install with elevated PowerShell
- Open Start.
- Type
PowerShell. - Right-click Windows PowerShell or PowerShell.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run these commands separately:
Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name "SNMP.Client~~~~0.0.1.0"
Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name "WMI-SNMP-Provider.Client~~~~0.0.1.0"
Wait for each command to finish. Then verify the installation:
Get-WindowsCapability -Online -Name "SNMP.Client~~~~0.0.1.0"
Get-WindowsCapability -Online -Name "WMI-SNMP-Provider.Client~~~~0.0.1.0"
The State value should be:
Installed
Restart Windows and start the affected program again.
If PowerShell reports that a capability is already installed, the feature itself is present. Continue with the system-file repair steps below. If it reports that the source files cannot be found, Windows may need access to Windows Update, an organization-managed repair source, or official installation media.
Do not rely on the old feature syntax
Some older instructions use DISM commands referring to deprecated feature names. On current Windows, that approach can fail with error 0x800f080c. Use Add-WindowsCapability with the capability names above instead, as described in Microsoft’s SNMP and WMI SNMP troubleshooting guidance.
Check whether the SNMP services are available
Installing the optional capabilities is different from confirming that the related Windows services are available.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Press
Windowskey plusR. - Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Look for SNMP Service.
- If the application requires traps, also look for SNMP Trap.
If the services are absent, the SNMP capability may not be installed correctly. Return to the optional feature steps rather than copying a DLL into a system directory.
If the service is present but stopped, right-click it and select Start. To make it start with Windows, open Properties, set Startup type to the setting required by your monitoring software, and select Apply.
Do not change SNMP community names, trap destinations, permissions, or security settings unless you know what the monitoring system requires. Those settings affect network administration and are separate from the missing-DLL repair.
Fix 2: Repair Windows component files with DISM and SFC
If the SNMP features are installed but the error remains, Windows servicing files or protected system files may be damaged.
Recommended Free Tools
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM repairs the Windows component source that SFC uses.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
The scan may remain at a particular percentage for a while. Let it finish. Do not close the window merely because the progress display appears unchanged.
A successful operation reports that the restore operation completed successfully. Restart Windows before testing the affected program.
Run System File Checker
After DISM finishes:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. SFC may report that:
- No integrity violations were found.
- Corrupt files were found and repaired.
- Corrupt files were found but some could not be repaired.
Restart Windows after the scan, then try the original application again. Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions provide the same repair sequence.
SFC cannot install an optional feature that was never installed. If the SNMP capability is absent, install it first. If both capabilities show Installed and SFC cannot repair the component, continue with System Restore or Windows repair rather than downloading the file.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies, while the repair functions require the full version; it is optional, and the Microsoft commands above remain the direct repair path.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a legitimate file, but a quarantine event does not prove that the file was safe or malicious.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections related to
snmpthrd.dll. - Expand a detection to inspect its location, detection name, and action.
Do not immediately choose Restore. Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file makes it active again and may cause another detection. Review the original path, the Microsoft signature information, and the detection details first. If malware is suspected, run a security scan and leave the file quarantined until the result is clear.
If the file was removed from a Windows component, reinstall the SNMP capability or repair Windows instead of restoring an isolated copy. If it belonged to an application directory, repair or reinstall that application from its original vendor.
Microsoft explains the relevant choices in its Protection history documentation.
Fix 4: Repair the application that reports the error
If Windows starts normally and only one program reports the missing file, the program may be old, incorrectly packaged, or searching for a legacy component it does not actually need.
Try these steps:
- Identify the exact program named in the error.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected program.
- Open its menu and choose Advanced options, Modify, or Repair, if available.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the program again.
If no repair option exists, uninstall and reinstall the application using its original installer or official vendor source. Back up application settings first if the program stores important configuration locally.

For software with a launcher, use its built-in Repair, Verify, or Verify integrity function. This is especially important when the message appears after an incomplete update. Do not assume that a game needs snmpthrd.dll simply because a third-party page lists games among possible users of the file. The verified identity of this file points to the Windows SNMP/WMI stack.
Fix 5: Consider drivers only when the application has a driver problem
snmpthrd.dll is not a graphics driver, printer driver, or Visual C++ runtime. Updating a random driver is not a file-specific fix. However, an older monitoring program may also depend on a network adapter or management driver, particularly if the error began after an operating-system migration.
To inspect devices:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters, System devices, and any category related to the affected hardware.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Properties and read the Device status message.
- Use Update driver only with a driver from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and retest the application.
Do not uninstall a working device merely because snmpthrd.dll is missing. If Device Manager shows no relevant warning, return to optional feature installation and Windows servicing.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show which versions it finds, while driver installation through the full version is optional; verify any proposed driver against the hardware manufacturer before installing it.

If the problem began immediately after a Windows update, feature removal, cleanup utility, driver installation, or failed repair, System Restore may return system files and settings to an earlier restore point.
System Restore does not remove personal documents, but it can roll back drivers, installed programs, system settings, and updates made after the selected point.
- Press
Windowskey plusR. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
You can also open Control Panel, select Recovery, and choose Open System Restore. Microsoft documents the procedure in its System Restore guidance.

Fix 7: Repair an older Windows installation
The problem has a different character on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, or an older monitoring computer. Historical servicing records show snmpthrd.dll versions from those Windows generations, including different version and architecture details. Those records are evidence of historical builds, not safe download sources.
Do not copy an XP or Vista DLL into Windows 10 or Windows 11. Do not substitute an x86 file for an x64 component, or the reverse.
For a legacy computer:
- Use the original Windows installation media or a matching official repair source.
- Confirm the installed service pack and operating-system architecture.
- Use System Restore if the problem followed a recent change.
- Apply the correct operating-system repair installation when system files are damaged.
- Reinstall the old management program from its original media or vendor.
- Test the program after each change.
The exact modern file location should not be assumed. Microsoft’s current SNMP system-file documentation lists related SNMP files but does not provide a universal current placement or manifest for snmpthrd.dll.

What “bad image” means
If the message says that snmpthrd.dll is “not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error,” check these possibilities:
- The file is damaged.
- The file belongs to a different Windows release.
- The application is 32-bit and is loading an incompatible component.
- A required dependency is missing.
- The file was replaced by an untrusted download.
- Windows component servicing is damaged.
- The application is incorrectly packaged.
Run the optional-feature installation and DISM/SFC steps first. If the message started after someone copied a DLL manually, remove the unofficial replacement through the application or Windows repair path and restore the component from a trusted source.
A 32-bit application can require 32-bit supporting components even on 64-bit Windows. Windows directory redirection also makes assumptions about System32 and SysWOW64 unsafe. Do not place arbitrary copies in both directories.
What not to do
Do not download the DLL from a random website
There is no verified official Microsoft standalone snmpthrd.dll download. Random DLL archives can provide:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Malware or unwanted software.
- The wrong Windows release.
- The wrong processor architecture.
- A file with no trustworthy signature.
- A file that does not match the installed component.
- A replacement that hides the real dependency or servicing problem.
Use Windows optional features, Windows Update, official Microsoft installation media, System Restore, or the original application vendor.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET for this file
Those runtimes do not provide the Windows SNMP/WMI component. Installing them may be appropriate for a separate error, but it normally will not restore snmpthrd.dll.
Do not use regsvr32 as a generic repair command
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair tool.
Running:
regsvr32 snmpthrd.dll
is generally not appropriate for this Windows support library. If it reports that the entry point is missing, that confirms the command is unsuitable. It does not mean you should find another copy of the file. Microsoft documents the purpose of regsvr32.

FAQ
Is snmpthrd.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. Its verified description is WMI SNMP Thread & Log Library, and it is associated with the Microsoft Windows Operating System and WMI SNMP Provider.
Is snmpthrd.dll required on every Windows computer?
No. SNMP is optional and is not enabled by default. A normal Windows installation may not contain the SNMP/WMI components until an administrator or application installs them.
Should I copy the file into System32?
No. The correct file, architecture, registration, permissions, and dependencies depend on the Windows build and the requesting application. Install the relevant Windows capability or repair the application instead.
Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix the error?
Normally not. snmpthrd.dll is part of the Windows SNMP/WMI stack, not the Visual C++ runtime.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What if the error says the specified module could not be found?
The named DLL may be missing, or one of its dependencies may be missing. Install the SNMP and WMI SNMP Provider capabilities, then run DISM and SFC. If only one application reports the error, repair that application as well.
What if the SNMP capability is already installed?
Run DISM and SFC, check Windows Security quarantine, and determine whether the application itself is old or damaged. If the issue began after a recent change, try System Restore.
Does the file belong to a game?
The verified component identity is Microsoft’s WMI SNMP stack. A game or launcher may report the file because of a packaging or dependency error, but do not assume the file is a normal game runtime. Repair or reinstall the affected game only when its own files are the source of the request.
When should I use Windows repair or reinstallation?
Use an official Windows repair path when the capabilities cannot install, DISM and SFC cannot repair the component store, System Restore is unavailable or unsuccessful, and the error affects more than one application. Do not replace system files from a third-party DLL archive.
Recommended Free Tools
How do I know the repair worked?
The original program should start without the missing-file message. PowerShell should show State : Installed for the required capabilities, and services.msc should show the needed SNMP service when the application requires it. If the same error remains, identify whether it is coming from Windows, the SNMP provider, a dependency, or the application itself before trying another repair.
